Shoot. I think I bought the wrong pipevine??

Hey all!

I went nursery hopping with my mom today, and I found a Giant Pipevine and got SO excited. The one I bought is just an annual hear.

Then I came here and checked the FAQ and saw that this might kill PVS cats?? Is that correct? If so, I'll take it back and exchange it for something else.

I'm surprised they had Giant Pipevine at that nursery.Apparently,Polydama cats can use it but I don't think they're found that far north.
I recommend A.macrophylla (durior) because it gets quite large and sends up new vines everywhere,once established.In fact they're coming up under my porch and through a crack in the sidewalk.Unfortunately there aren't any PVS in my area...so no cats on my pipevines :(

My a. tomentosas are coming up everywhere, too, Dan. This fall I'll dig up the ones that are in bad places, pot them up and hopefully they'll develop enough of their own roots in pots that I can plant them out next year.
As far as I know, like Dan posted, all the tropical pipevines are toxic to PVSs, including the giant flowering ones. I've never seen the types that our PVSs use - a. macrophylla, a. tomentosa, a. serpentaria, a. clematitis, a. erecta or a. californica - in a nursery. You have to mail-order them or go to the mail-order nursery and get them yourself.

Lol! I have pink drift, that came from a grower, but pulled out the coral drift because it was competing with roses I liked better. I am practical about my garden. If it works, I keep it, I really don't care about its "common-ness." I have a Prosperity "tree" that I have espaliered to the north side my wall, and I wanted a tiered effect, so I have Pink Drift, Golden Buddha, International Herald tribune, and Natchitoches Noisette under the tree for filler. It works. I suspect you are in good company Sheri. In the heat of summer Drift keeps going. It is like an Ever-ready bunny! My pink drift is quite short and is three years old about 18" x 24" But I know what you mean about its lack of perceived value. I feel that way about a lot of my roses. Many of my roses are earthkind OGRs, which makes them the common roses of the OGR world. But they are beautiful and reliable. Like Pink drift. Only more special.

When we purchased the current house in 1996, it had the original GE builders grade dishwasher from 1985. It was very loud and didn't clean well, so we never used it. When the kitchen was remodeled in '06 we went with a new GE Profile dishwasher, as we also were buying a GE washer & dryer. That dishwasher only lasted us a year and was repaired several times (rolling racks and noisy water intake valve), but it cleaned fine. We replaced it with an Electrolux Wave-Touch, but only had it 60 days due to installation issues that could not be resolved, through it cleaned better than the GE. We were then without a dishwasher for about 2 years before we got a Miele Diamante Plus in 2009. In the two years that we've had the Miele, it has cleaned everything well. We don't pre-wash, but do rinse some dishes, pots/pans in the sink so piece of food would go in the garbage disposal, but we don't wash them with soap. On occasion, we will soak and hand-wash an item that may have heavy baked-on food, but that's like once or twice a week. Regardless, on the Miele we use the Normal mode or the Pots & Pans mode and everything comes out clean. Only use the China/Chrystal mode two or three times a year. The Express mode we don't use, since it only washes for 5 minutes and then does two 5 minute rinses (we found this 5 minute wash is not long enough to clean a full load). I check the bottom filter once a week and clean it out, but it hardly ever has anything in it.

The cardboard didn't help with maintaining a moist root area, but isn't totally responsible gor what happened, either. It's very tempting to put down something like cardboard, newspapers or landscape fabric to suppress weeds, but they really do more harm then good. Weeds grow through them and root into them and become harder to deal with in the long run. It would be best to remove the cardboard, bite the proverbial bullet and pull the weeds by hand. Once the area is reasonably weed free, it's not that big a chore to keep it that way. Declined really is a better description than died. The branches showing the most extreme drooping will not revive, but the stems themselves should be fine. Cut them back to an area showing green cambium and they should put forth new growth. There is still ample time for lots of regrowth before fall. There are some root diseases which can cause this kind of rapid collapse, but I am reasonably confident that you will find very dry root balls. Should they prove to be nicely moist, you are then dealing with a more serious condition for which there is really no cure. Fingers crossed.

I think durior and macrophylla are synonomous, aren't they? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Isn't there an A. gigantea (giant pipevine)? Is that what you got Ladyisz?

I've got a giant p/v here n growing crazy .. just noticed this morning , that 17 outta bout the 65 eggers i counted on it hatched out today .. But I havent seen any other shoots growing out of the ground as some of you'll are saying .. I did start some cuttings though..

Susan - Yes, I got the A. gigantea. :( I got to thinking about it and I'm really not sure what to do.

I mean I have read mixed things. Some say that say PVS use it. Other say they just won't use it. Other things say it's toxic to them. The last thing I want to do is harm our little friends.

I was going to return the plant to the nursery - but if I do that, someone else will just buy it and plant it... so what good would it really do?

What do you guys think?

I would trust what everyone here on the forum says about it, Ladyisz. I know that some of the southern folks, like MissSherry, Cat, and Floridians on the forum, probably know more about whether the PVS cats will be safe on the A. gigantea or not. I recall them saying that A. elegans (Calico pipevine) is not safe, but not sure about A. gigantea.

I think Sunlight Gardens is still selling their A. macrophylla if you want to order a couple. They come in quart pots for $10 each, and their shipping is lower than a lot of mail order companies. Also, I got my two A. tomentosas from Mail Order Natives - don't know if they have any left or not. I would be checking really fast, though, because a lot of people are already out of pipevine.
