The cross drilled PVC in moderation sound good. Maybe cap one end and put it into the pile on a 30 degree incline, so the uncapped end is the low point. As heat rises, it would rise up to the capped end. Oxygen could still get in through the low opening faster than without the pipe. In one of my last compost piles built, I coiled a soaker hose in an upward spiral as I built the pile. The pile ended up about four feet tall with the end of the hose sticking out the top. I cut the end off an old hose and hose clamped an air compressor fitting to it. Now I could either hook my garden hose to the soaker hose and water the pile from within, or hook my air compressor up to it and pump in oxygen. Then I read somewhere about how much oxygen it would really take to make a real difference and I decided it would be a waste of time, energy, and air compressor service life to do this. So now I just have a pile with a hose sticking out of it and one less soaker hose to use until next year. It did work though. I could turn on the compressor, hook up the hose, regulate the pressure down to 15 or so PSI and walk away with it hissing happily. The compressor is a 6 HP 30 gallon tank, and it would cycle on every 5 min or so. It was a nice idea, but not very green. I bought a shed hold down kit that I have yet to install on my shed. It has four corkscrew things to screw into the ground to which you attach cables laced though the shed roof. These corkscrew things (augers I guess), are almost two feet long and since my pile is held together with concrete remesh wire with 6 by 6 square holes, I can screw the augers in from the side and pull out the guts of the pile in various locations. The little bits of pile that come out go right back on top of the pile and the holes left behind let in fresh air and with a little time close up on their own as the pile settles. That's my favorite method so far. I'm allergic to something in 'active' compost, so I absolutely can't afford to turn my piles. So I am always looking for passive ways to keep the processes going at a decent speed.

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I told her what I was up to and told her I was raking up the leaves in the ditch, clearing up the grass, etc. She said I could have all the leaves I want and I asked about the newspaper and she said she'll just leave the bin by my compost bin. LOL Not quite the garbage bag full of Starbuck's coffee grounds, but I'm sure it will make a nice tea! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Amy, It was great but we missed you and wished you had been there with us. Jen, I would hope so! If you didn't take home enough plants to keep your busy, then cleary that means you must take home a lot more next year. Mia, They both do vine and do best on a trellis. However, you could let them sprawl if you want. With the Armenian cukes, I grow them both ways....letting each plant climb or spray as it prefers, and get a great harvest either way. With the summer squash plants that are C. moschata, they vine wildly and will do so whether on the ground or climbing something. I find them easier to control on a trellis. In lieu of a trellis, how about an extra large bamboo teepee for each plant? I can just picture a certain little Sprout playing inside each teepee this summer. Dawn
