Reheat old pile in new composter??

I've been piling grass clipping, leaves, and pine needles in a large pile in a corner of my yard for many years with the intention of using the compost. The problem I encountered was the pile would cool and would never be usable. I now have probably well over a cubic yard of this half composted mixture. I've turned it and "fluffed " it several times with my bucket loader, but I can't seem to get it restarted. Recently I finished two 55 gallon horizontal compost barrels to see how they would work. I filled each with the half composted mixture, but after a few days in the barrels I don't see any reheating. The temperature inside the barrels is still very cool. Looking at the material, it's obvious that it isn't ready to use and that it required more breakdown. Is this a lost cause? Should I just take this stuff, and spread it out in my woods, and start from scratch?
