P. G. Wodehouse question--please help!

I am trying to remember a Wodehouse book I read several years back. It involved a fellow who abhorred his boss. No one knew, and when the boss died, he was coerced to drive his own car at the head of the funeral procession. As he neared the cemetery, he attempted to slip away. However, the entire funeral procession followed him, as he sped up faster and faster, eventually leading this huge procession into a deadend alley.

Another caper, I think in the same book, involved the man in the hospital, immobilized with a casted broken leg. He is visited by someone who drips ice cream onto the cast. Following is memorable scene whereby a trail of ants march under and through the length of the cast while the man is helpless to move or get help.

Anyone remember the name of this book? Or is it two books? I would love to read it again.

Az-very interesting, but I think I have this quite well figured out. For the home gardener with a mixed bag of crop - it's all worthless The item that caught my attention was your reaction to the figures I put up from Brian & Darren and the comparison to Bernie. When compared to the ref. for Wiki, and the information that it contained, the figures varied. What I see - the base sat. MAY be of value, but only to specific crop. All the research was on a singular and certainly did not take into account all the possible variables but all came up with a 60-80Ca./0-20mg. Where did the Hefty's come up with 65-85 and 6-12? I am guessing that it may be the figures for corn & soy as it's fairly far off the academic consensus and if so, it had to be obtained by trial & error. Maybe they know something? Whatever the case as I grow corn,lettuce,cukes,tomatos,sweetpotato,chives,peppers,onions,tobacco,& on occasion, others - it's useless on my part. In June I am 24 years retired and my only goals these days are to TRY to get some of the local small part time farmers and hay field people to stop tossing money. These people do not do any kind of testing and do as "been doing". Yup, the guys doing hayfields & pasture use 19-19-19 and the other bcast AFTER they till. I use the heading " you are tossing money" and nothing else. It does get some attention - skeptics abound. Again, thanx for the followup but it's been my results in my backyard that has gotten the initial attention. Garden is 3,000 sq.ft.

Help plz! Have spider mites ruined my potato plants?

1. If you have nearly baseball sized spuds already you can pick them anytime and eat them. So no they are not ruined, unless you were hoping for giant baking potatoes. I would start picking them as you need them and use them as new potatoes. 2. I have only used systemics for spider mites as my problems were on ornamental plants. You don't want to use those for edibles. Oils or soaps should help to control them, just be sure to read the lable to make sure potatoes are listed on it, and if there is a waiting period before eating them, be sure to follow it. 2a. Yes potatoes from a non-organic supermarket are loaded with stuff. Potatoes are one of the most chemically sprayed crops there is. BUT.. they are never harvested until after the "safe" date when the chemicals are supposed to be gone from the plants system. 3. Yes row covers should help, and more active spraying them with water during the hot dry periods. Just peek under those row covers now and again to make sure something didn't get in under them.

Thanks for your information. I combed the pages of the Wodehouse site, looked in Wikipedia, and have had no luck.

It was a book, not a short story. I am still hoping a Wodehouse fan will reply. Those scenes were so hysterical they have remained in my mind for years.

Kathy, I have read a lot of the Wodehouse books but cannot recognise your plot lines. As you have not been able to find this book on the suggested sites, I wonder if you have the correct author? There were a number of similar writers of this type of humour. Perhaps you can recall the character's names and country your book was set in to narrow the search down.

When I first read this, I immediately thought of James Thurber. The stories sound a bit more "American" to me as well. I've read a great deal of Wodehouse and Thurber although not for many years.

I am beginning to doubt it is Wodehouse, too, although I was pretty sure at the start. I have not read Thurber. I got the book from the public library years ago. I had read a bunch of really funny books by the same author, whom I thought was Wodehouse. I need to think on this some more. Thanks for trying to help!

Now I am thinking of S.J. Perelman, although I have not read much of his work.
