Here's something to think about........

What book have your picked up and read BECAUSE you liked the COVER DESIGN??

Or....

What book have you picked up and read BECAUSE you liked the TITLE ?

( include photos if possible for cover design !)

( I know, I know, too much of the teacher-assignment in me ;0)

Interesting subject Yvonne, as I have been planning to buy a copy of Jane Eyre for a friend who, somehow had never read it. She claims her class never 'did' it at school, which seems a feeble excuse for never reading it. ;-)
Anyway I was looking at the Book Depository site (free delivery to Canada being too good an offer to turn down) and came up with over seven hundred choices . . .
If you had never heard of Jane Eyre and looked at even 20 of them, I wonder how many of those covers would give you a clue to what lay inside?
May be the ones showing a single female, or the 'artist's impression' of a busty female and a hunky guy. But what about rugged mountains, coastal scenes and ones so 'obscure' they have no 'meaning' at all?

Answers on a post card please.

This is enlightening, from a Britain's Got Talent imdb post by stuart-g 8 hours ago (Wed Apr 15 2009 08:18:54) Ignore this User : Report Abuse Reply I was in the audience at Susan's audition in Glasgow back in January and they edited out an awful lot of her audition. Firstly, Amanda burst out laughing when she said she was going to sing. The audience started booing and heckling her before she had even started singing. When she said she was going to sing Les Mis Simon told her to do a different song because he hated that specific song (although she didn't have another backing track). Amanda then mockingly told her to do some Britney Spears because it would suit the audience better. Amanda was laughing and mocking this poor women before she had even performed. When she started singing though, the whole place gave her an ovation instantly. She won the whole venue over. Amanda even mocked her slightly in her final comment. However, she was, once again, edited to make her look like the angelic person she isn't. I told people after that audition that she was going to win the show - I still think she is. 'Nuff Said

That depends. I don't think that glitter enhanced ceiling texture sprayed grotto style over vertical surfaces, let alone on a ceiling was ever in good taste. There is really nothing done with any sense of quality in the entire house. It's worse than the pictures. I agree though, there is a tendency to do things so they look current, but a fair amount of "current and updated" is not in good taste. Even in these forums. It looks okay now because it is current and popular, but not necessarily because it looks good--if you know what I mean. But if you remember the split level house I posted a few weeks back with the high 1950s-60s baroque interiors, I didn't have much bad to say about that house. It was a taste of the vulgar sort even it's day, but it was very well executed for what it was, and I think there is always a place for that. And that house was built and furnished as such, which is also different. (This is the trashy, wannabe version of that--and done in the "wrong" house, so to speak. )This was probably a typically Federal period house when this was "modernised". It may not have been in great shape, but those houses were generally victims of benign neglect for most of their lives, which is why there is a fair amount of original detail to be seen today. (In houses that were left alone even though they were "dated".)

Old Mother West Wind, Grandfather Frog. Boy, did I love those when I was a kid in the 40's and 50's. I pulled out one which was printed in 1915, so my mother enjoyed them as well. None of mine have checkered covers, so they must have been printed for a long time. Goes to show you a good story never goes out of date.

Thanks guys, I will check that out. A little about myself: I am recently widowed, I live in the mid west in a 2 year old patio home. I have two friends in the development who keep me so busy, it's hard to find reading time. My main interest right now is traveling. I have been reading since the first grade teacher stopped reading books to the class. My favorite books are historical novels...not the romances. I just bought......and am re-reading the Outlander series. That's some heavy reading, about 800 pages per book and 6 in the series. I also like The Earth Children Series. I ran out of historical novels years ago and went to books about strong women, Danielle Steele's books for example. I like light reading most of the time. Books like The Little Lady Agency by Hester Brown, her second was Little Lady, Big Apple. I like Fern Michaels, they are such an easy read which helps at my age. I especially like her Sisterhood Series and Hey Goodlooking. Another one I like is Night Swimming by Robin Schwarz. The list goes on and on. If you don't mind I will hang in here for a while. There was another book I was interested in. If I remember right the title was "Under the ____ Tree". It was about a woman who's husband surprised her with a divorce, he gave her nothing except a house in a small town and kicked her out. In spite of feeling so alone, she makes a life for herself in her new environment. I am going to check out Ladder of Years, thanks again.

I bought the book Past Caring by Robert Goddard for the evocative old-London picture on the cover. The book actually was not very good.

I am a bit embarrassed about this, but I purchased this book at a used bookstore because of the cover and then I ended up spending the rest of the day reading it and laughing my head off.

Many years ago I picked up a book with a title like "The Revolt of Grandma" featuring a picture of a foxy Granny on the cover.
I bought this interesting looking paperback and it turned out to be a self-justifying account of why the author decided not to mind her daughter's child any more and what the result was.
I was totally taken in!

I seem to be attracted to any book with an animal (especially a horse) or a river on the cover or in the title.

I picked up Katherine by Anya Seton at the library in 1986 because that's my name, albeit spelt differently.
