What zone?Please help!

I have trouble determining what zone is Bosnia in? Trying to send some roses to my brother but not sure which hardiness. Any neighbours can help with advice? Thanks!

Hey there neighbor! I am going to Bulgaria next week and am bringing a couple of roses to my mother. I got a lot of criticism form other Bulgarians not living there telling me tht it is the land of roses, why I am bringing some all the way from here...I think the best way to determine the zone is if you look at the world map and draw horizontal line to the US and see what zone it falls in. Unless its at a top of a mountain, it should be approximately the same. I know in BG the weather is very similar to NY state.

Zornitza, I don't think that works because of the ocean currents and their effect on the climates both in North America and in Europe.

In any case, Bosnia would probably be in more than one USDA climate zone, depending on the distance from the sea and the elevation. The USDA climate zones are based on the lowest expected winter temperatures. With temperatures in Fahrenheidt, here is the basis for the scale. Maybe this will help you decide.

USDA 2 = -50 to -40 degrees
USDA 3 = -40 to -30
USDA 4 = -30 to -20
USDA 5 = -20 to -10
USDA 6 = -10 to 0
USDA 7 = 0 to +10
USDA 8 = +10 to 20
USDA 9 = +20 to 30

Each zone is also separated into two areas, designated as 7a and 7b, for example. Zone 7a would have temperatures from 0 to +5 degrees F, and zone 7b would have temperatures from +5 to +10 degrees.

I would go for it Rick, I think your location is looking even more encouraging, since it is really a zone 7 and not too wet, I'm guessing. Here in NM, pomegranate does very well throughout the middle and lower Rio Grande Valley, with no protection, and no obvious dieback. Most of this area is in zones 7 and 8, but single digits are not that uncommon, especially where cold air settles in the lowest part of the valley. Some of these areas have reached record lows of -19F! I believe this was in the 1970's, but I would be surprised if there aren't at least some tender plants surviving from before that time. There are some very old pomegranate and fig trees in Albuquerque. I'm experimenting with some pomegranates here in my zone6/7 area and so far so good. I'll be able to say more when/if I get fruit. I started with hardwood cuttings which take very easily, so I think this is a plant that is very condusive to experimentation, since it is easily propagated, and grows well with a mimimum of care. Siting in a warm microclimate is definitely very helpful, as others have already mentioned. Good luck

I grew up in Holland, MI. Lake Michigan, which is about 90 miles wide at this point and shocks many visitors who find that it is fresh water and not a salty ocean, affects the weather a lot. Because of the lake, Holland gets much more snow than areas 30 miles inland. It also stays cooler longer in the spring making it a good area for fruit growers who need to avoid late frosts that ruin flowers and fruit set. It stays above freezing in the fall longer due to the lake's retained heat, also. Summer temps are usually 5 degrees or so cooler than my location about 30 miles inland. The zone maps have changed over the years and aren't always clear for EXACT locations, BUT they really only show what perennials will survive the winter lows they are based on. This does not affect most of the veggies grown in the area since they are grown as annuals. You will want to look at frost dates and length of growing season for good ideas on how most veggies will grown there. In my opinion, the lake and the snow make it a wonderful place to live. But about half the people I talk with are already complaining about the cold weather and the snow to come. I think they should live elsewhere if they dislike the weather that is a sure thing each and every winter.

Katrina Depending on where the plants are kept (on a try/saucer? On 'open' shelve outside so the water can drip out? Or?) you should have water draining out quite fast. I keep all mu plants outside during Spring - Fall, and they get usually watered by rain. The mix drains well and fast, I let it drip on a ground as they are on open shelves. (Using gritty mix like this, I do not worry about plants getting rained on - unless it is raining a lot). If not sure they need water (with new mix, you may not be so sure at the beginning), try the skewer test: insert wooden/bamboo skewer or a chopstick (or skinny dowel with sharpened end; or even pencil will do) deep into a pot. If it comes out dry ater few minutes in the mix, time to water. If it feels damp/cold and may have some particles sticking to it, there is still plenty of moisture and wait with watering. Consider using something to raise the pots so they don't sit in extra water: simple and fast way is to use plastic caps from bottles; or layer of stones like pea gravel (not so easy to see the water); ewwmayo is using "egg crate" (also have seen names as light diffuser and some other names); you can get it from stores like Rona, Lowe's, Home depot or hardware store: -egg+crate+light+diffuser-

calidesign- I do like crepe myrtles and I know they come in multiple sizes but my mom has 3 crepes and they started to get leggy looking and not many blooms once her tree grew too much and kept them in the shade. My front yard doesn't get a ton of light and the sun moves corner to corner but I am considering them for the right side of the driveway. I'll have to pay attention this weekend to exactly how many hours it gets.
