Mermaid that doesn't grow

3 years ago I've planted, near a dead Prunus, a little Mermaid that is growing very very slowly.

How long I have to wait until it will grow?

My garden is in the North of Italy, near the Como lake, and the rose is exposed at south-west.

Moi aussi j'ai plantÃ© Mermaid .
IL n'a qu'1 an et pousse trÃ¨s trÃ¨s lentement .GreffÃ© sur rosa canina, il m'a fait 4 tiges, toutes cassÃ©es !!! . Les chats, les oiseaux? tout de mÃªme, il me paraÃ®t bien fragile !!!!
Une amie m'a affirmÃ© que Mermaid dÃ©marrait trÃ¨s lentement, qu'il lui fallait au moins 3 ans pour dÃ©marrer .
Alors Fantin, cette annÃ©e sera la bonne pour toi !!
Moi je patiente encore!!

Fast-forward 1.5 years from my last post. I've fertilized and kept the area weeded and mulched. Yet the tree has grown very little- two years after planting it is almost the same size. In comparison, the other Goldrush is over 10' tall (much better branched than the old pic) and produced ~10 apples last fall. So, I decided to make a change. I've dug it up (mostly) bare root and potted it in a 7 gal fabric container. Maybe it can make a comeback in a different environment. While digging it up, I tried to save as much roots as possible. But, I didn't find all that much in the way of roots. The tree I dug up is the bottom one in the below picture. The soil was very heavy. After I had the tree out, I dug down a few more inches and it was quite wet and a bit stinky. It seems that the roots were never able to establish. In its place, I'm planting an Izu persimmon from Burnt Ridge (the upper tree in the picture). Rather than risk the same fate with this tree, I took 8-10 shovels of dirt from the hole and mixed it with 3 cubic feet of pine bark and about 25-30 lbs of Turface. I filled in the hole with the mixture and set the new tree so that the tips of the roots extend just slightly below grade. I then piled the mixture up to form a 3' wide hill on top of it. At the center, it is ~10" high, after pressing it down. I then piled on a few more inches of wood chips. Hopefully it will do better than its predecessor.

Happy Thanksgiving..I hope everyone has a fine day, and a finer dinner..Don't eat too much, though. :) Josh, I'll have to decide which to do first..prune or repot. Think I'll repot. Last night I checked sunsets roots. It's so rootbound, I was able to lift the rootball from its pot in one piece. lol. Josh, I don't use Peat w/succulents...'no Peat no black soil'..Remember I mentioned that before? Josh, you don't fertilize in summer? Ever? Why only in winter, if you don't mind me asking??? Does fertilizing in winter include all plants? Succulents, tropicals and veggies? Snow in June!! That's amazing. Even flurries is IL in the month of June is rare. What's going on? Has this happened before? Is Foliage Pro the same as Dyna Gro? Do you add to soil or foliar spray? Howdy Whip. I mix mediums, keep in plastic containers and label. Succulent blends have different ingredients than tropical blends. The succulent mix is very gritty, even though Turface isn't included. If my mixes dried any faster, I'd be watering 24/7..lol. Jeff. It's true, I asked why my C. Jade Sunset isn't growing, well, rather, growing slow. But, other succulents are. 98% of my plants were started as babies, cuttings and sown seeds. When I got them, I didn't think ahead..Now, some are so large I don't know where to set and get sun, too..Especially Pachypodiums, E. Crown of Thorns and Agaves. Who'd have 'thunk?' Hello Lady. Yep, don't have time to work on plants today..going to my sister's for Thanksgiving dinner. Perhaps tomorrow I'll repot the sunset. Since it's so rootbound, locating from pot A to pot B won't cause problems. Thanks Hey Mike..As you know, we both have more plants than a small nursery, lol. Remember me telling you how fast my soil dries? If another soil method was used, particularly if it dried quicker than my mix, I'd be doing nothing but watering, lol. I mean, I have to sleep. lol. One large shelf is deep..too deep for me to reach. All are succulents and a couple cacti. They're watered 2-3 times, from Nov-Feb. The mix is bone dry, but since they're succulent they survive..in fact, a couple Aloes and Haworthias are in bud. To those who have luck using Turface, or whatever this type of gritty mix consist of, it's great you found it. Especially those who lost succulents in the past. Anyway, thanks for everyone's help. I enjoy hearing/reading how ppl care for their plants, respect views, even if I don't use one ingredient. :) Again, HAPPY THANKSGIVING.. Have a Wonderful Day..hugs, Toni

It looks like it may not have received enough light. I wouldn't put it in direct sunlight at this time of the year (especially after being etiolated), but if you have a patio with a lot of reflected light, that might be a good place for it. Or a sunny window. Also, does the container it's in have holes in the bottom? If the soil gets soggy, that's not good for these type of plants (and most types). You have to balance watering with how much sun/wind it gets, along with how fast draining the soil is.

J'ai plantÃ© Mermaid la semaine derniÃ¨re. Il est au pied d'un pin et j'attends avec impatience qu'il y grimpe, peut-Ãªtre que j'aurai les premieres fleurs cette annÃ©e.

Effectivement Fred tu as raison et d'ailleurs je pense Ã changer de place Mermaid qui semble ne pas apprÃ©cier le soleil. Il est vrai qu'il est exposÃ© plein sud contre un mur de pierre. Oups....

Mon pÃ©piniÃ©riste prÃ©fÃ©rÃ© m'a dit que les Mermaid devaient Ãªtre greffÃ©s sur canina car ils avaient du mal Ã vivre chez nous (en provence) sur leurs propres racines.

fantin, cherish every one of these moments because, when your Mermaid decides it's ready, it's going to get BIG and mean, real quickly. That generally takes about 3 years, which is the case with many, if not most, own-root roses (which I assume yours is).

Hello Kaatje,
C'est effectivement un Mermaid dans mon jardin mais les feuilles supportent difficilement les rayons du soleil ou la chÃ¢leur puisqu'il est acccolÃ© Ã un mur de pierre. Peut-Ãªtre qu'un Golden Wings serait mieux pour la rÃ©gion.

It is indeed a Mermaid in my garden but leaves support with difficulty the rays of the sun or heating since it is supported against a stone's wall. Perhaps a Golden Wings would be better for this area.

hello, I noticed you are from the como lake area. We live in Australia, and are going to holiday in Italy in june, we have been on the net searching for roses gardens that we can visit, but so far not much luck. We will be staying in rome for a few days, then renting a car and driving around the country side, the como lake area is where we are going to hang out for a while, you are so lucky to live there! I live in zone 8 (south of France) and my Mermaid, planted in a walled garden, against a high wall, West exposition, got big really quick. It is now huge going up higher than our second floor windows. It is extremely sturdy but the branches are very breakable. The size of the flowers has improved tremendously over the years. Je vis dans le sud de la France (zone 8) et mon Mermaid (identifiÃ© grÃ¢ce Ã un membre du forum,merci Ghislain) est plantÃ© dans une cour fermÃ©e, exposÃ© Ã l'ouest, contre un grand mur. Il a tout de suite poussÃ© comme une flÃ¨che et atteint aujourd'hui, 11 ans aprÃ¨s, des proportions imposantes. Il nous empÃªche de fermer les fenÃªtres du 1er Ã©tage. Il est costaud mais ses branches, mÃªme les plus grosses, sont trÃ¨s cassantes. La taille des fleurs a Ã©normÃ©ment augmentÃ© avec l'Ã¢ge, atteignant cette annÃ©e 15 cm de diamÃ¨tre.

J'ai plantÃ© un Mermaid l'hiver dernier, accolÃ© Ã un mÃ»r blanc, exposÃ© ouest/sud/ouest.... du soleil de 11.00 Ã 20.00 tout l'Ã©tÃ©...

A ce jour, 5 ou 6 branches arrivent Ã 300cm.... 10 litres d'eau par semaine et 3 fois de l'engrais au pied... encore des fleurs Ã aujourd'hui.

Par contre de gros soucis avec Pink Cloud.... pas de remontÃ©e et pas de parfum au bout de 3 ans de mise en place.
