raspberry canes

I already asked about moving a plum tree but I stupidly bought raspberry canes before realising I would have to move . can I plant them in big tubs until I move eg in 6/12?

IIRC they do OK if uprooted and you keep the root-ball. You can plant them in tubs though but is that worth it?

I seem to recall that raspberries are woodland plants and consequently prefer a cool root run, therefore they never perform particularly well in a pot.
Having said that, I potted up several canes of Autumn Bliss last May which were totally neglected all summer. They didn't fruit last year, but I'm not surprised as they hardly got any water. I have just planted them out in the garden and they look healthy and are sending up new shoots. I reckon they are pretty robust.
I agree with weatherlawyer though. I'd be tempted to plant them out now and just dig them up when you are ready to move. You might get a decent crop of fruit that way as well.

They are fine! Floricanes get old! Some of mine do not do this, but Fall Gold and others do, no worries! The ones that tend to be spineless seem to do this. I have Allen black raspberry and the canes are purple, cool looking plant, super aggressive grower though. it wants to root all over! 6 times I pulled cane tips out of the ground last summer. So it will be easy to tell which canes you need to remove once they fruit.

Water them keep the ground moist. the leaves looked like they need water,. Looks kinda like fertilizer burn. Maybe they are OK? I can't hurt to try. If well watered, and fed, and they do not respond, then some type of disease or pest is going on. If the good canes appear to stay that way, go with them, they will sucker and eventually produce more plants. Looking at the info on raspberry viruses, it doesn't look like virus damage. Maybe cane borer, any signs of entry at the base of cane? Maybe an insecticide should be tried? Don't give up just yet.

If you see a cane or two dying back on a raspberry, you shouldn't be too concerned. Raspberry canes are biannual. The real issue is whether the cane was doing well enough before so that the roots have the energy to send up another cane when they are ready. In some cases they don't, and a raspberry plant continues to decline, sending up smaller and more feeble canes as time progresses until finally the plant dies. Don't judge a raspberry by the death of visible canes, but rather by how well the canes were doing before. If, however, 6 months go by without any sign of leafage, the plant most likely did not survive.

Were these dug up and transplanted, or have they always been in containers? If transplanted, the root systems may have been disturbed; see what grows in 2018. If no growth then, consider getting new plants. Black raspberries are one of the shortest-lived caneberry varieties; 3 to 5 years of production is not unusual for any one clump.
