Radishes, radishes, radishes!

Here's the scene - you plant radishes so the kids/grandkids get a quick lesson in growth, and you don;t mind an odd one in your English Salad. Then you get this humungous crop of round red balls ( and long black ones this year) which, if you don't use them quick will split and be horrible to taste. You've tried successive sowing, but rhe later ones catch up anyway. How many ways to use a radish. Well, last night it chucked some into a stir fry and they were delicious! Along with some ginger, hoi sin, green beans, garlic and chicken strips they made a really interesting combiation. So I surfed the net and now have recipes for chutney, soup and other delights using Radishes. Seems they are pretty nutritious althoght the leaves are said to be better than the radish - they contain trace element and a high level of phytosterols which fight cholesterol. I'm wondering now if they might be useful for insecticide sprays or something - got to use them! Anybody else love to grow them then wonder what to do with them - the black ones ar coming on in leaps and bounds too! Cheers

I've found their proclivity to provide profuse, prolonged, proliferate, profligate provisions and produce a problem.
(You can tell I'm a real pro).
And yes, as with broccoli, the leaves contain far more nutrients than the rest of the plant. (I mix the leaves with young dandelions and various lettuces and basil in a great tossed salad).

Even worse than zukes and silverbeet for unrestrained growth...if only I could get the same results with tomatoes!

I like the daikons - nice radish, tasty leaves, and heaps of delicious seed pods to eat as too. Well, you can't have all three from the same plant of course, though perhaps Shax could before he gets his next prescription filled. LOL. (I'm so funny sometimes, I almost make myself smile!!!) I left my French Breakfast in a tad too long. They're now the size of small baseball bats and virtually hollow!

That seems a small amount of vinegar for all those low-acid vegetables to be considered safe for BWB processing? I'm referring to the Radish Relish. For fresh eating, fine but I wouldn't be comfortable canning it. The ratio of vinegar to vegetables is basically 1:4+ and the standard recommended minimum is 1:2 to be safe for BWB canning. Can I ask what the original source of this recipe is? Thanks. Dave

I'm going to guess it's your soil which you should have tested (see below). Not only a nutrient problem but a soil tilth issue as well. Check with your state's Extension Service. Each county should have it's own Cooperative Extension Office which provides free publications and information for the asking. They will have valuable vegetable/gardening tables available specifically for your area determined by universities and horticultural research scientists who have collected data from growing those crops in your state. Your tax dollars are already paying for this service so you may as well get some use out of it. My suggestion to you silverwind is to get your soil tested. Your Extension Service can provide you with soil testing information. Mine was only $9.00, less than the cost of some strictly pH tests, and far more thorough. No guessing at what might need to be added, no money wasted. Yes Casper pumpkin sounds like a nice addition. What would like in place of them? I have some cowpeas, I decided not to plant this year. I didn't want them to cross with my long beans so I nixed them, but they are good for this year. I think I remember seeing a cowpea ad from you recently. Unless you wanted something different. Concur: Black Spanish whether the long type or the round type are hot. Most of the Asian winter radishes are mild. Some of these can be grown the spring, but are best for fall. Zone 8 or higher they will stand through the winter. In colder zones they can be stored like turnips. Both salad radishes and winter radishes are susceptible to cabbage root maggots. Other than that they are one of easiest veggies to grow. For a salad radish that is hot, medium size, longer standing, I would recommend icicle Most productive and tasty for me has been Pink Beauty. For a winter radish I like the Chinese Red Heart/Watermelon, Korean, Tae Baek, Japanese (daikon) Minowase.

Eating the seed pods - is that in the green stage, when they are still forming? And how do you prepare them? Or do you harvest the seeds and roast them? Might be a slightly silly question, so regard this as some light entertainment from my side. :)

I've still got some Muenchener Bier Radishes for eating. Lovely taste. Thinly sliced, with some salt, then on some bread with butter or cream cheese. Some of them are starting to bolt. I'll give the seed pods a go then.

The daikon seed pods are really nice. Young and green and tender. Very juicy. A slight peppery taste, sort of "Radishy". Would be lovely in a stir fry I'd say, or just as part of a salad with rocket etc.
