Radishes, radishes, radishes!

Here's the scene - you plant radishes so the kids/grandkids get a quick lesson in growth, and you don;t mind an odd one in your English Salad. Then you get this humungous crop of round red balls ( and long black ones this year) which, if you don't use them quick will split and be horrible to taste. You've tried successive sowing, but rhe later ones catch up anyway. How many ways to use a radish. Well, last night it chucked some into a stir fry and they were delicious! Along with some ginger, hoi sin, green beans, garlic and chicken strips they made a really interesting combiation. So I surfed the net and now have recipes for chutney, soup and other delights using Radishes. Seems they are pretty nutritious althoght the leaves are said to be better than the radish - they contain trace element and a high level of phytosterols which fight cholesterol. I'm wondering now if they might be useful for insecticide sprays or something - got to use them! Anybody else love to grow them then wonder what to do with them - the black ones ar coming on in leaps and bounds too! Cheers

I've found their proclivity to provide profuse, prolonged, proliferate, profligate provisions and produce a problem.
(You can tell I'm a real pro).
And yes, as with broccoli, the leaves contain far more nutrients than the rest of the plant. (I mix the leaves with young dandelions and various lettuces and basil in a great tossed salad).

Even worse than zukes and silverbeet for unrestrained growth...if only I could get the same results with tomatoes!

I like the daikons - nice radish, tasty leaves, and heaps of delicious seed pods to eat as too. Well, you can't have all three from the same plant of course, though perhaps Shax could before he gets his next prescription filled. LOL. (I'm so funny sometimes, I almost make myself smile!!!) I left my French Breakfast in a tad too long. They're now the size of small baseball bats and virtually hollow!

Reed, You're going to have radishes coming out of your ears. I have learned over the years not to plant more radishes than I want to eat, except they do make a great trap crop for flea beetles, and I grow rat-tail radishes all summer with squash as a companion plant. I like radishes but only grow a few because I only want to eat so many at any given time. Larry, A lot of my fall/winter 2012 plants have gone to seed, some have been pulled and replaced with new plants for spring, etc., but I still have some lettuce, chard, kale and mustard going from last fall...and one plant each of last fall's purple sprouting winter broccoli, which is just now producing a harvest, Romanesco broccoli and brussels sprouts. Those three were leftovers I stuck in a molasses feed tub and they have done really well there. Most of my cool-season stuff is in the ground, so now I am waiting (rather impatiently) for the warm-season to arrive so I can do more planting. Dawn

Concur: Black Spanish whether the long type or the round type are hot. Most of the Asian winter radishes are mild. Some of these can be grown the spring, but are best for fall. Zone 8 or higher they will stand through the winter. In colder zones they can be stored like turnips. Both salad radishes and winter radishes are susceptible to cabbage root maggots. Other than that they are one of easiest veggies to grow. For a salad radish that is hot, medium size, longer standing, I would recommend icicle Most productive and tasty for me has been Pink Beauty. For a winter radish I like the Chinese Red Heart/Watermelon, Korean, Tae Baek, Japanese (daikon) Minowase.

Have you ever grown a rat-tailed radish!?!

Have you ever grown or ever even heard of a rat-tailed radish? Well I was gifted a package of seed and every year I like to grow something new and different in the garden. People I was not prepared for this! These radishes get a long skinny seed pod like a rat tail that you eat instead of the root bulb. These photos show 3 plants. The tallest is 5 ft tall and 4 ft wide. They send out these long arms with purple flowers on the end and spiky looking things all the way up that are turning into rat tails! I sure hope they are delicious. I don't normally even like radishes that well... I may be trying to rehome about 100 rat-tailed radishes.

Eating the seed pods - is that in the green stage, when they are still forming? And how do you prepare them? Or do you harvest the seeds and roast them? Might be a slightly silly question, so regard this as some light entertainment from my side. :)

I've still got some Muenchener Bier Radishes for eating. Lovely taste. Thinly sliced, with some salt, then on some bread with butter or cream cheese. Some of them are starting to bolt. I'll give the seed pods a go then.

The daikon seed pods are really nice. Young and green and tender. Very juicy. A slight peppery taste, sort of "Radishy". Would be lovely in a stir fry I'd say, or just as part of a salad with rocket etc.
