Radishes aren't... radishing?

It's been just over the 'harvest' date by planting time. I only had about half the seedlings make it, due to pillbugs/etc. So I figured, OK, I have *9* radish plants. That's fine, we don't use much anyway.

But I checked two today and all there is is a little spindly root under each. :(

What on earth am I doing wrong?!?

1) Yes, it's in full sun.

2) No fertilizing, really, it's a fairly loose slightly raised bed, I put part-finished compost (and all finished, when I can ^_^) on in fall and WAY early spring.

3) Water has been fine.

4) Carrots did the exact same thing last year, although I let them overwinter and found survivors this spring- woody, stunted survivors, but survivors nonetheless. Slightly different area, although in the same bed and similar conditions. (Fall, not spring.)
