Help I have a problem with my Koi !!!!!

Hi there I seem to have a problem with my Koi.

He seems to have a small waxy like coating on his head and around his gills. I spotted it on his tail and that seem s to have cleared up - understandably i am a bit concerned. Can anyone help ?

Are they like little waxy white spots? I have found these on my fish on occasion and they have recovered from them with no problems.
I can't remember the name of it but had thought it was whitespot or Ich but on google-ing them they said Ich was fatal so it can't be that that I was thinking of. Sorry I haven't been much help have I? But I would just hope that someone with better information than myself will answer you. If you post your question again on the link below someone may answer you there.

they're not white spots - i cant describe what its like. Hubby decided to bath it in a sline solution and it seems to be working - i'll keep you posted on what happens

Did I cut into the collar of the branch that is growing out to the right (in the photos)? When I pruned I didn't remove branches; I cut the leader of each trunk because they were all sort of growing inward towards each other. How would I recognize the branch collar on a leader? Which leads to my next question: if I cut them all back (off), below the crack, I will, again, be cutting the leader. Should I look for a dormant bud and be sure to leave a bid of leader behind to prevent the cracking?

I have had a red-eared slider in my koi pond (approx. 1500 gallons) for the last eight years. Occasionally, he will swim after the fish and sort of try to nibble at them, but they are much to fast for him, and he has never caused any damage to them. Be sure there is some way for the turtle to come up out of the water and lie in the sun, which it will want to do periodically. In my case, there is a brick wall around the pond with about 18 inches of sunning area between the wall and the pond edge, and I use a log as a "ramp" for the turtle to get to it. A semi-submerged rock or log would do just as well. Incidentally, he seems quite happy eating the koi food (Hikari) that I use. Hope this helps.

Ahhh...so you've used Baquacil for the last 6 years until now? Yes? You didnt' say that in your first post. And right now you're using chlorine tabs in your skimmer and shocking the pool with a chlorine or non-chlorine based product for sanitizer instead of the Baquacil peroxide "shock"? Just trying to get this all straight. Are you in the middle of a Baquacil to chlorine conversion? That is a specific process, and it takes some patience to do, during which you'll see different water colors and clarity as you convert. Of course, as you already probably know using an OTO test (which shows yellow in the presence of chlorine and tests up to 5 ppm of Total Chlorine only)...a brownish red color means that you have a much higher level of Total Chlorine (Free Chlorine plus Combined Chloramines)in the water. You'd need to use an FAS/DPD drop test to very accurately determine up to 50 ppm how much Free Chlorine, Combined Chlorine and Total Chlorine you have. I use this test on my own pool frequently and it's very easy to use. I still stand by my advice. There are detailed instructions and help on TFP for Baquacil users who need/want to convert to a less expensive product, as well as immediate help with your specific issues. Is it more like cottonwool, if it is it could be a fungus.

It could be Sap, which can be treated with malachite but see how the salt bath works first.

unfortunately my koi died a few weeks ago - he had the white stuff all over his body - still dont know what it was. thanx for your help anyway x

That is such a shame. I still think it might have been a fungus, especially as it went all over it's body. I have always used Eradick which has worked for me. Sometimes these things come as secondary infections to another problem. I am sure that you did all you could. It is such a shame when they still die. We have all gone through this ourselves sometime in our ponding experience. Hope all your other fish are alive and well. Did you treat all the pond just in case?

You are very welcome. I hope they all stay well for the future. One of my sisters baby goldfish looked like he had fungus on his mouth this weekend. One had already died before she noticed this as they are really small still and very fast moving. She came over to show me her fish and to collect some of my Eradick as I told her that I thought it sounded like a fungus, but called at our local pet shop who told her it was definitely a mouth fungus and sold her a treatment which she has now done. I am sure that it will all be okay now.
