Redesigning new zone 10 garden for shade and water economy

I have a new built house on the Algarve and I am now in my second summer of living with the garden. The garden is quite big but rather featureless with herbaceous borders around the edges. It suffers from the problems of new gardens: poor soil, no large established shade trees, extensive areas of 'lawn'. The lawn grass is now, in midsummer, poor, with large dead areas and this despite nightly watering (at excessive cost).

I am a little overwhelmed - how to redesign the garden for shade and water economy?

I realise the quickest way to sort the problem is to have the garden professionally redesigned but I really can't afford this.

Has anyone gone through the same process and have any tips about where to start?

1. Start with RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE. Find the plants that grow where your garden is, without the need for extra water. Lots of "Mediterranean" climate plants (from the Basin, from Australia, from Chile, from the Cape of So. Africa and from California.

2. Reduce or eliminate the garden water-guzzlers (traditional roses, birches, liquidambar, weeping willow, poplars, magnolia, bamboos, citrus, avocados)

3. Design your garden to be functional. First. And then embellish for beauty.

4. Get rid of the lawn. Completely. No if's, and's or but's.

5. Choose an effective irrigation system. One that trains plants to be drought-tolerant. Drip ain't it.

6. Turn off the computerized irrigation controller most of the time and use your own brain -- and finger.

7. Set up your sprinkler system or hose to avoid watering hard surfaces such as driveways and patios.

8. Regularly check your hose or irrigation equipment for leaks or blockages.

9. Hydrozone -- Group plants with similar water needs to make watering more efficient
1. Plant at the right time. Take advantage of cool fall weather and winter rains by planting in October-November for most Med. Plants.
2. Contrary to popular -- almost universal -- belief, adding organic matter to the soil ("amendment") does not lead to a drought-tolerant garden.
3. Water newly-planted plants WELL. Starting with soaking the planting hole THOROUGHLY before putting the plant in.
4. Cover the ground -- with hardscape or plants. ALL the ground.
5. Mulch newly-planted plants. But NOT the whole landscape.
6. Mulch intense garden working areas: orchards, vegetable gardens.
7. Manage weeds. (do NOT pull them.)
8. Reduce fertilizing. Where you MUST fertilize, use an organic fertilizer.
18 Prune trees and other woody plants only when necessary. Pruning stimulates shoot growth, which increases the need for water.
1. Plant windbreaks where wind is a factor in growing plants (as well as in being comfortable outside).
2. Collect and use rainwater. And design your garden to channel what does hit the ground during the rainy season.
3. Do some homework on gray water usage. What's legal in your area?
4. RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE. Again.

I found this website really useful http://www.jardin-sec.com/.
The website is in french, but the photos are really inspiring, and i can manage browsing the catalouge just fine, with very basic french.
He breaks plants down into levels of drought tolerance, and has lists of selections for: lawn replacements, dry shade, pioneer plants, plants that self seed etc.

His book is available in english, called 'The Dry Gardening Handbook', again lovely pictures, but also a lot of background, site preperation, keeping plants that need some water near the house, and an A-Z of the plants.

Unfourtunatly I am better at the research and planning, than the doing (!), so can't testinfy to the results.

The first one is Either Blackthorne or Blackberry Candy. Second one I guess is Lilacs for Gradiel 3rd is Persian ruby for sure. 5th is International delight. My Favourite. 6th (Green) it's original color is even more beautiful.I have two of these.They were grown from seed.These are green in color as seen in the pic. 7th is French Cavalier. 8th is Cherries and Cream 9th is Arabi Pasha. --- @ Avedon Lahore is in Zone 10.Summer period of May/June is very hot and dry with temperatures touching 45-46C followed by July and August when monsoon moves in.Too wet n humid with temperatures around 34-38C.In september it starts to get better and temperatures start to drop down reaching 0C eventually in December and January. Feb/March are our spring months. I use green shade for daylilies (50%).I purchased all my daylilies from diffrent sources last year when I was planning to set up an online mailorder nursery.Some of them have already flowered and some , I am awaiting. It is normally not good to keep a shrub stressed for long periods of time so I would find another location or figure out a way to give them afternoon shade. In time, their root system will develop and grow; it will be able to absorb more moisture from the soil but it will still stress out during the summer months. Maybe even develop sunscald later on. And future growth that grows into sunlight areas would be affected as well. If you want something that will thrive in full sun (defined as more than 4 hours of sun), I would look for something like daylilies, roses, asters, black-eyed susan, phlox, salvia, etc At this time, the plant is not adapted to being out in the garden summer conditions so both sun and moisture are a problem. I lean for moisture being slightly more of a problem with 'too much sun' not too far behind. Too much sun exposure harms the leaves in direct contact with the sun and makes them turn all yellowish or white-ish, including the leaf veins. The fact sunscald has not happened (yet) suggests it is more of a moisture issue to me. But too much sun can still be a problem: it helps the moisture escape thru the leaves fast, which stresses the plant and does not allow it to thrive. Just remember that hydrangeas developed in areas where they lived under trees, in locations where they do not get a lot of sun exposure, especially afternoon sun. Morning sun is less strong than afternoon sun so east facing locations are normally preferred. The more you can provide those conditions, the easier the plant will adapt to your garden.

Thank you yaardvark. i just uploaded some pics as you suggested for the front yard. new user so bear with me - for some reason houzz wouldn't let me upload more than two. i will try and edit/add more through comments. hooveb - that's exactly right. Several contractors would not even come out to give a quote unless the project was a minimum $50k. Your drip irrigation story sounds awesome. I think we know what we want but the lowest possible option still comes out to about $45k. I am drawing a blank as to what we need to outsource to the contractor and what part we can do ourselves. We have been mulling over this project for over a year now. Spoken with 3 or 4 contractors, looked at lots of houses and millions of pictures. Information overload perhaps because i still can't seem to make it work. As I said, we know what we want. we want to extend the patio area (concrete/pavers) to twice the existing size to provide entertaining/play space. Cost of that is $10k minimum, possibly more. The other half of the backyard would have remained lawn/turf but with better irrigation since artificial turf would be even more expensive and we don't like it much. Some sort of focal point in the backyard would be nice but an appropriately sized water fountain would add another $5-$8k so nixed that. We were considering adding a retaining wall on the back end of the backyard and on the right side and extend the sidewalk but that's another $10k so nixed most of it. We want to add a fire pit and some seating. We want to extend the concrete sidewalk (sideyard), build steps going up to the front of the house, add some trees that will eventually provide shade. Veggie garden on the other side of the side yard. We ruled out bbq/island etc. We had also ruled out gravel/decomposed granite (except in the veggie garden area) as being hard on the feet and tough to maintain but I am wondering if we can work that into the design somehow to keep costs down. kiminipl - house faces North east. Backyard faces southwest and as I said, we get relentless sun. There were three ficus trees in the corners of the backyard that we had to take down because the roots were terribly invasive but it made things worse from a shade perspective. garden gal - thank you for your perspective. I will check out the link. I have scoured pics on bewaterwise.com, houzz for drought tolerant plants etc... just can't seem to figure out the right plan for us with the budget we have in mind. When I mentioned a retaining wall, I was actually thinking considerably shorter walls rather than a head high fence. You don't want to crowd your road or driveway with a tall fence. You don't want mud washing onto your driveway from your yard. You don't want rainwater draining off the driveway against any WOOD you use for your retaining wall(s) because prolonged exposure will decrease their life span and the lowest point -- the drainage ditch -- will have the longest moisture exposure. You actually need to have a drainage space alongside the driveway (one seems to already have been begun) -- perhaps a French drain ... ditch filled with gravel ... with the ditch itself and the top of any gravel in the ditch both be gently sloping away from the road. You don't want the water in that ditch against a wood retaining wall because, as the lowest point, water will be against that very short retaining wall more. If, at this time, you don't want to invest in building your a short stone or brick lowest retaining wall with its top several inches above the driveway, consider at least investing in some concrete cap blocks or patio blocks set on their end or edge side by side and leaning against a sloped embankment above the drainage ditch. Stagger the spaces between the leading blocks and the flat blocks above/behind them so water doesn't wash through the spaces. By not adding concrete now, with more cap blocks later, you could recreate your lowest retaining wall nearest your driveway with the blocks laid flat. Above/behind that first short short retaining wall alongside the drainage ditch, you could create level planting areas with spaces that "fit" your yard -- some deeper than others above wood retaining walls. What trees are alongside your driveway, unless removed, could limit the depth/width of these flat planting areas so you could have deeper level spaces in some places but less deep where trees block what you want to do. You can create multiple retaining walls and "steps" of level spaces in which you can plant ferns or shade friendly ground cover or moss. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/350999364712347931/

Caracola, what type of lawn grass do you have? A small lawn planted with the appropriate variety of turf grass helps cool the surrounding area.
You need to develop a plan for your yard. What is most important to you? Where do you want to start redesigning your landscape? Have you visited other area gardens or wandered around the neighborhood to see how things are doing? What plants do you like? What do you want to do in your garden? Do your homework before you pick up a shovel or trowel.
If you do it in stages and in amounts you can deal with the project won't get overwhelming either in work load or the bank account. If the entire area is "professionally" landscaped all at once the effort to keep the new plants watered and cared for until they are established can be exhausting.
Have you considered using native/indigenous plants? They should be able to take whatever the soil and climate can dish out.
Gardenguru has some good ideas, I especially like the comments on automatic watering systems. They're highly overrated and the bane of my existence, on top of that they're expensive to install and a pain to maintain.
I do take exception to guru's view on lawns. The appropriate turf grass correctly managed takes no more water than many supposedly "xeric" plants.
Right plant, right place is the mantra.
