Redesigning new zone 10 garden for shade and water economy

I have a new built house on the Algarve and I am now in my second summer of living with the garden. The garden is quite big but rather featureless with herbaceous borders around the edges. It suffers from the problems of new gardens: poor soil, no large established shade trees, extensive areas of 'lawn'. The lawn grass is now, in midsummer, poor, with large dead areas and this despite nightly watering (at excessive cost).

I am a little overwhelmed - how to redesign the garden for shade and water economy?

I realise the quickest way to sort the problem is to have the garden professionally redesigned but I really can't afford this.

Has anyone gone through the same process and have any tips about where to start?

1. Start with RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE. Find the plants that grow where your garden is, without the need for extra water. Lots of "Mediterranean" climate plants (from the Basin, from Australia, from Chile, from the Cape of So. Africa and from California.

2. Reduce or eliminate the garden water-guzzlers (traditional roses, birches, liquidambar, weeping willow, poplars, magnolia, bamboos, citrus, avocados)

3. Design your garden to be functional. First. And then embellish for beauty.

4. Get rid of the lawn. Completely. No if's, and's or but's.

5. Choose an effective irrigation system. One that trains plants to be drought-tolerant. Drip ain't it.

6. Turn off the computerized irrigation controller most of the time and use your own brain -- and finger.

7. Set up your sprinkler system or hose to avoid watering hard surfaces such as driveways and patios.

8. Regularly check your hose or irrigation equipment for leaks or blockages.

9. Hydrozone -- Group plants with similar water needs to make watering more efficient
1. Plant at the right time. Take advantage of cool fall weather and winter rains by planting in October-November for most Med. Plants.
2. Contrary to popular -- almost universal -- belief, adding organic matter to the soil ("amendment") does not lead to a drought-tolerant garden.
3. Water newly-planted plants WELL. Starting with soaking the planting hole THOROUGHLY before putting the plant in.
4. Cover the ground -- with hardscape or plants. ALL the ground.
5. Mulch newly-planted plants. But NOT the whole landscape.
6. Mulch intense garden working areas: orchards, vegetable gardens.
7. Manage weeds. (do NOT pull them.)
8. Reduce fertilizing. Where you MUST fertilize, use an organic fertilizer.
18 Prune trees and other woody plants only when necessary. Pruning stimulates shoot growth, which increases the need for water.
1. Plant windbreaks where wind is a factor in growing plants (as well as in being comfortable outside).
2. Collect and use rainwater. And design your garden to channel what does hit the ground during the rainy season.
3. Do some homework on gray water usage. What's legal in your area?
4. RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE. Again.

I found this website really useful http://www.jardin-sec.com/.
The website is in french, but the photos are really inspiring, and i can manage browsing the catalouge just fine, with very basic french.
He breaks plants down into levels of drought tolerance, and has lists of selections for: lawn replacements, dry shade, pioneer plants, plants that self seed etc.

His book is available in english, called 'The Dry Gardening Handbook', again lovely pictures, but also a lot of background, site preperation, keeping plants that need some water near the house, and an A-Z of the plants.

Unfourtunatly I am better at the research and planning, than the doing (!), so can't testinfy to the results.

Alex, there is an extremely talented gardener here in my area who has done some gardening similar to your zone - although I haven't seen her posting in the last few months. I attached a thread she responded to a while back about growing hydrangea in the Laguna area. 'Macs' - hydrangea macrophylla. But, be warned, if you are not seeing them at all in your own neighborhood, there may be a reason. The florist type hydrangeas you mention are varieties of hydrangea macrophylla. Sometimes they are perfectly acceptable planted in the garden in mild zones like my own 8b....after being acclimated to being outdoors, these are greenhouse grown plants. The problem with them is they have been bred and raised for the flower trade, and grown under a strict regime of fertilizers, hormones, lighting and temps so that they will bloom to coincide with particular dates, like Valentines Day, Mothers Day etc....often grown with no regard to long term plant health. Sometimes they recover from the treatment and do well, other times they do not. If you were to receive one as a gift, I'd say go for it and plant, but if you have a choice, choose regular nursery stock, not florists stock for your garden. Your seed choices look good with a couple of exceptions. Hellebores sown in Feb may take 15 - 18 months to germinate. They need to experience a period of warm moist, followed by a somewhat lengthy moist chill, then will germinate while conditions are still cool. If I sow them fresh by Aug/Sept, I will have germination approx March into April. If you were to ask around June, someone could probably send you fresh seed (like me) that you could sow - much more reliable than dried commercial seed. Alstroemeria can be similar, they self sow like crazy in my garden, can be stubborn or at least very slow (many months) from dried commercial seed. And do you know they go dormant around August, leaving a blank space in your garden? The hummingbirds love them while present, but they spread, become a little messy, disappear until Fall rains begin or the weather cools. Here is a link that might be useful: Hydrangea, California

Go ahead and plant lamium maculatum -- there's not only the yellow-leafed variegated type but also a white leaf (has a thin green edge) that flowers in either white or purple. I prefer the purple flowers as it contrasts more and is a real knockout. It will take a surprising amount of dryness compared to the yellow-leafed type. The lamium you should NEVER plant is lamium galeobdon, AKA Yellow Archangel. It is wildly invasive, and you need to be careful where you are because invasives can escape pretty easily into the hills. What's wrong with a little cold? How else can you grow peonies and tulips and delphiniums?? Not to mention apples, cherries....it's a long list.

For me it's not so much the economy causing me to cut back on garden spending. Instead its my wife's comfort level and other priorities. She's an accountant and doesn't have much interest in our yard and garden so long as it looks neat and tidy and maintained. The first year and a half we were in our house we spent a decent chunk on the yard, probably ~$2.5k: - building a rubble garden wall (material free, but took me some time) - planting a bunch of trees (free from my aunt's woods) - ripping out 1/2 my front lawn, planting a garden - replacing 7000 sf of grass lawn with an eco-lawn mix - putting in a drip irrigation system Since then it's mostly been letting things grow. Last year I added several new perennials between the shrubs. Spending probably dropped to a few hundred dollars. Again it was mostly just letting things grow. This year garden spending will be virtually nil. Instead I'll be building a new yard shed. Between the concrete foundation, walls, siding, doors, roof, etc. it's going to be a semi-major project and soak up our budgeted resources for home-improvement stuff. What i'll be doing garden-wise instead will be the winter sowing project. I collected a whole bunch of seeds this fall and have purchased maybe a couple packets of seeds commercially. I'm now starting to get the potting soil and do the winter sowing seed planting. I'm estimating my gardening costs for this year will be around $50. After that it'll be a year-by-year basis depending on what the yard needs. I was pretty antsy when we moved in to get plants in the ground and get them growing. Now and over the next several years it'll mostly be a matter of just letting them grow. That and maybe moving plants from one location in my yard to the other as adjustments are needed.

When the community was built 20 years ago, the county required shade trees on the beauty strips near the side walks. The developers planted oaks but the strips were too narrow, causing the oak roots to lift sidewalks and driveways causing major damage to pipes, etc. The board is hellbent on removing all oaks lining sidewalks and new county rule states that new trees can’t be placed in a narrow strip. They already removed 90% of them in the community of 580 homes

Caracola, what type of lawn grass do you have? A small lawn planted with the appropriate variety of turf grass helps cool the surrounding area.
You need to develop a plan for your yard. What is most important to you? Where do you want to start redesigning your landscape? Have you visited other area gardens or wandered around the neighborhood to see how things are doing? What plants do you like? What do you want to do in your garden? Do your homework before you pick up a shovel or trowel.
If you do it in stages and in amounts you can deal with the project won't get overwhelming either in work load or the bank account. If the entire area is "professionally" landscaped all at once the effort to keep the new plants watered and cared for until they are established can be exhausting.
Have you considered using native/indigenous plants? They should be able to take whatever the soil and climate can dish out.
Gardenguru has some good ideas, I especially like the comments on automatic watering systems. They're highly overrated and the bane of my existence, on top of that they're expensive to install and a pain to maintain.
I do take exception to guru's view on lawns. The appropriate turf grass correctly managed takes no more water than many supposedly "xeric" plants.
Right plant, right place is the mantra.
