Size Of Eucalyptus Seeds

I want to propagate Eucalyptus seeds BUT.... I have found some "seeds" look like chaff and I need to know the Eucalypt seeds that are large and easily distinguished as seeds. A list of 20 or 25 of the largest would be grossly appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe its only Chaff you have there, as there is plenty of it inside a gum nut. If you really want a special species just plant the seed, I find some veggie seeds are a lot smaller than Eucalyptus and they come up ok, so plant a lot there are so many in one gum nut. Most Eucalypt seeds are small. Have a look at the link below it may help..Cheers..MM.

Sometimes the information you need is available in those old-fashioned things called BOOKS!

"Eucalyptus Seed" by Boland & al. (CSIRO 1980) has a mass of data on this subject, with macro photographs of both seed and chaff of a wide range of species plus tables of seed characteristics of a much larger number, including numbers of seed per 10 g, germination times and optimum temps or stratification for cool-climate spp.

If you have access to a major library you may be able to access this book.

The name Eucalyptus gunnii 'Silver Drop' is widely presented as a cultivar name and therefore does not qualify for trademark protection. A company could use another name to sell the plant (eg. Brandon's Bodacious Eucalyptus series), and have that name trademarked, but nothing like that has been mentioned here. If the plant was being sold under a trade name, that would not preclude seed propagation. It would only limit what you could name your plants when reselling them. The plant itself, Eucalyptus gunnii 'Silver Drop', does not appear to be patented. Since there is no patent, you are free to vegetatively propagate it (cuttings, grafts, etc). Plant patents only apply to vegetative propagation. Plant variety protection is used mostly for some agricultural crops to limit propagation from seed. I know of no woody ornamental plant that has ever been given this legal status. And, to go to even further extremes, I am absolutely sure that there is no patented gene in this plant. Growing the seed is 100% legal.

Some of you are now harvesting figs along the BC coast so that means that many eucalyptus trees have seeds. If you notice a tree you like it's easy to collect seed and grow your tree. There are many kinds of euc and the most tender grow in Victoria or the nearby islands. Eucs may flower in fall and some carry seed pods all year. They are planted in Victoria because of their smell and resistance to drought & deers. Saanich, BC is an excellent place to find eucs. Do not plant eucs close to a wall. A palm will be forgiving, not the euc. The wood burns very strong if you make firewood. Florists like the leaves. Fast growing even in a very dry El Nino summer. Yes Felix, the 2 photos you posted are definitely the silver dollar eucalyptus tree. And yes, very familiar with the size of that trunk. You plant a baby and it turns into a monster. And yes again, the trunk WILL NOT grow nice and staight-has to curve exactly the way IT wants to. As much as I love the fragrant branches, it is still a bit of a pain in the you-know-what. Glad it's in the backyard. I heard from a friend of mine in So. California that it can be quite invasive and has known to interfere with house's foundations. Glad mine is far enough away from the house. I thought I was planting a mosquitoe deterrent, but no-the mosquitoes are just laughing. Still such a pretty tree and I love the foliage. But it is a monster! Sue

zone 5 eucalyptus 6-8 ft tall from seed 1st season?

I just saw this old post, wondering if you planted your eucalyptus or not. I'm in Chicago, zone 5, so don't think there is any type of eucalyptus that would survive our cold wet winters. But, after one winter seeing lots of eucalyptus grow in the English Garden of the Chicago Botanical Garden, I thought it was interesting. It was the blue eucalyptus that you see in your dry arrangements. I tried it the same year in the spring from seed. It is the blue leaf eucalyptus that you see in dry arrangements. The seeds are tiny, but most have sprouted in regular potting soil. I planted those when they were 1-inch high into pots, then put them in the ground in the garden. At the end of the year, in the fall, they were maybe 2ft tall, cut them down and I believe I still have some great-smelling twigs in the house. I think in our climate they're grown as annuals... they won't survive the winters here. If someone knows otherwise, I'd love to find out. I hear southern Illinois grows eucalyptus... but that's 2 zones warmer.

Debate is raging in taxonomic circles as to whether Eucalyptus should be slpit further into the (currently informal) subgenera symphyomyrtus and monocalyptus(eucalyptus). One of the distinguishing features is the seed. That of the monocalypts is much larger and generally the same size as the chaff. That of the symphyomyrtus are smaller and are easy to pick from the chaff using a good bench magnafying glass and set of tweesers. I find it best to propagate eucalypts (both subgenera) in trays and transplant to separate containers when about the third or fourth set of seedling leaves appears.
