Lantana camara seems to be the only thing that slugs have not eaten this year due to two straight months of rain but it's a flowering plant. Garden where I have Lantana plants with yellow/bright pink blooms hasn't be dry in months and those plants are only ones where foliage hasn't been eaten by slugs. Lantana comes in variety of colors. Ferns and Euphorbia seem to be on many lists without someone disagreeing based on their own experience. I read a few articles on British web sites and most people indicate slug resistance of plants on all those "lists" depends upon which area of Britain you have gardens. Suppose that's true any place. Lamium and Salvia are supposed to be "resistant" but both have been attacked this year. Rosemary and Lavender also haven't been touched but probably not the lower growing foliage profile which you desire. I've got Lavender planted on mounds and in containers since it's so wet this year. Good luck in the slug battle which never seems to end!

I see no reason not to use stump grindings. Here's a load of 16 cu yds. delivered to me for free. I am a happy camper! It will take a while to use it all up, especially now that I'm dealing with ice storm damage. I really like the dark color. So far, no weeds have popped up and I have had it since last summer. If I do get a few weeds I can always top dress it with clean chips. The tree guy parks his truck and chipper here between jobs. His homeowners association won't allow him to park his truck and chipper in his driveway or in front of his house. Mike Mike

i dont understand your need for a slow growing.. groundcover ... its a bizarre dichotomy to me ... groundcover conifers are easy to train thru pruning.. to cover any given space you want.. in any design ... and most are extremely easy to root ... which they do.. if you just leave them there ... pancake... seems to do about 3 or 4 inches.. without running out there ... all the pine groundcovers [of which your title doest really ask about ... but are used as a comparison] ... though they cover ground ... not many remain short ... getting height in the ..call it.. 6 to 12 inch range, min .. over the years .... so i am back to wondering.. what you are trying to accomplish.. what is your goal ...??? cover space with a short plant??? or grow a second plant under a larger plant.. perhaps one on a standard ...???? e.g. the pancakes i have..... the intention ...was that they would fill bare space [cover bare mulch.. aka ground] .. and provide a green backdrop.. for looking at the mini collection ... instead of large gaps of 2 to 3 feet between one foot plants ... on the other hand.. many of the groundcover pines... will eventually.. swallow up a mini on a one foot standard .... you are asking for suggestions.. based on words that mean different things.. to different peeps.. w/o really telling us you goal ... [which sounds like any hardcore collector.. lol ....because they are a genre i dont have ... lol ] ken

I have lamium that I use for ground cover, edging and containers. My favorites are Purple Dragon, mentioned earlier, and Herman's pride. Herman's pride is clump forming, has nice yellow blooms in spring. After blooming, I sheer it back and it gets nice new silvery folliage. Therefore, it makes a nice companion for hosta edges emerging with yellow margins that turn white later in the season - very nice in my garden with what I think is Areomarginata Fortunei and Wide Brim. I also use golden creeping jenny, in one spot. I have to moniter it carefully. But like lamium purple dragon, I can dig up patches of it in the spring and use it in container gardens. I have tried Chequers - don't like it, it runs and doesn't fill in to keep weeds out. Also, I have tried White Nancy, the flowers are unremarkable and turn brown quickly in my garden. White Nancy grows more slowly which can be a plus or a minus. I am currently trying to use a couple of sedums as ground cover/edging. I don't even know what variety they are.
