Just a few things blooming in my yard
Comments (11)Thanks for the ideas on the gazebo,I think I will try some of the Iris's there and what ever else I can find, the woodsy look is because I live in the woods and love it no neighbors, just me my hubby and the critters.Don't get me wrong I love people, but some folks just thrive on drama, and that I can live without, know what I mean? The rose is a Rosa hybrid, but it is very fragrant like a rose is suppose to be,Mike my son bought it for me. I love the color of the Iris's,my husband says they are coffee color, lol.I also have some big purple ones but they haven't started blooming yet,it takes longer for the sun to get back here in the woods. Comments (12)Thanks, everybody! Sorry to put this in the wrong forum, I just couldn't figure out where to put it, and I thought some other people with inviting gardens may have also had trouble keeping people out of them. The garden that came with the house is really striking, and people who drive past often slow down to look at it or ask me about it. There's 70-something raised beds that are covered in patterns of tiles. It's a VERY conspicuous house. So I'm actually a little surprised that tweakers are targeting it, instead of somewhere less conspicuous. So, I just bought a gigantic "NO TRESPASSING - violators will be prosecuted" sign today. It's ugly, but I guess I need it. And a solar-powered motion light, which I'll install tomorrow. I also found a crack pipe in my backyard today. :( It was hidden underneath a pile of weeds I'd pulled a few days ago and left on one of my garden paths, so someone has definitely been in my yard in the last few days. RE: tweakers (yeah, I mean meth)...There's a big meth problem in this town, and there isn't a single neighborhood that's immune to it. When I bought the house there was no evidence of parties inside, though - in fact it was completely pristine inside every time I looked at it. And I never saw any trash around the house before I bought it, but now the sidewalk on one side has become a dump yard and shopping cart parking lot. :( RE: getting to know the neighbors...I'm on a corner, and my next door neighbors are a little sketchy, unfortunately. Very unapproachable. Come to think of it, so are the elderly couple across the street, and most of the neighbors in general. At least one person has been looking after my house while I'm at work, though, because someone yelled at my brother-in-law when he dropped off a compost bin in my yard, demanding to know what he was doing there. RE: surveillance cameras. I've thought about getting one but wouldn't know how to hard-wire it. Is this something the police might help with??? I'm not sure I'd want anyone to KNOW I had a surveillance camera, though, because I'm afraid my sketchy next door neighbors are either selling drugs or growing marijuana and I don't want them to think I'm trying to get them busted. Because if they were busted, they'd just end up right back in the house, with a grudge (the family has owned that house since the '50s, so they're not going anywhere). I don't want to start any sort of war with the neighbors. Does anyone know if you legally have to post a sign when you have a surveillance camera? Comments (16)I also live in northern California. Picture above shows my ever-shrinking lawn (to the left in picture). The planting beds used to be grass. I sprayed the grass with Roundup, 2-3 times and until no grass (mostly Bermuda) was coming up. I then weed-whipped the dead grass right down to the dirt. In the foreground bed I made a mound of planter mix (bought in bulk), planted and put in a drip system. In the background, I left it level and covered with mulch. I did this all myself (70+ y.o. woman) using a wheelbarrow to move the delivered material to the planting area. Took quite a while, but I am happy with the results. I continued to make inroads to the grass by spraying and replacing with beds....See MoreHow do I keep the neighbors weeds out of my yard?
Comments (21)@abelrose Did you try talking to them first before reporting them? I hope so. I have a jerk real estate investor who thought he'd flip the house next to quickly. He pulled up all of my former neighbors perennials including cute little very ell mainted evergreens, roses, spire, iris, lilacs, etc. Left completely empty beds with just soil. House way overpriced so it hasn't sold for months. Now the beds have every noxious weed I've seen from purslane to plantain to creeping charlei, crab grass, burdock, dandelion, deadly nightshade, and more. Idiot. My yard has perennials, mature trees, groundcover, grass, and a bit of mulch. Very few weeds have any place to pop up. I can pull them (about 3-5) once a week. This developer left a nastygram on my door right when all the beds in his property were denuded. He said my backyard was "a jungle". Backfired. I have a friend in code enforcement who said my yard was a great example of a fuuly planted, low maintenance yard. The only weed I have is milkweed for monarch butterflies. The developer thought having so many plants was "jungle-y". Compared to his dirt flats and burnt out grass I guess....See MoreMaureen Janda
