Looking for Large Hosta that is Slug Resistant

Hi All :)

I am looking for suggestions on large hostas (that can be fairly easy to find) and not at an outrageous cost that are slug resistant. I would also like them to put out tall stalks of flowers.

I plan on putting 3 around the feet of a Monarda Jacob's Cline (which is red).

The area will only receive partial afternoon sun.

Currently, I have an Elatior,which has a 5ft. scape of flowers. It qualifies on both counts! Phil

my elatior is bigger than any monarda i ever grew ...

regardless.. you are playing don quixote here.. in your quest for a sure fire slug proof hosta...

IMHO.. there isnt one ... and you will spend a lot of money on those that claim to be.. only to see them be attacked by slugs..

the bigger issue is, simply put... DO YOU HAVE A SLUG PROBLEM??? and if not.. why are you worried about them ...

i guess i would recommend plantaginea ... full sun.. nearly slug proof.. apple green and 6 inch white flowers that smell of gardenia.. and cheap.... royal standard is a replica with 3.5 inch white flowers and a bit greener

PS: and do note.. she wants a slug proof for afternoon sun... so the blue ones that seem such.. will not stay blue in the heat of the afternoon sun

Yes, I bought a whole big can of it!! Are they called cans or tubs or tins? I'm not even sure, but it was a big white, plastic container and cost me a lot! But it was well worth it!! I sprinkled some on the ground around the plants and I soaked some in a five gallon pail overnight. I strained the tobacco out of the water, split the strained water between two five gallon pails and topped up the two pails. The juice was pretty strong! After all, I soaked one third of the white container of tobacco overnight!! And, I started with boiling water! I then used a hand held pump sprayer and sprayed every plant thoroughly. My friend did the same thing with her garden. Even though we didn't see any slugs, we repeated the procedure two weeks later and we haven't seen a slug since. However, we are also vigilant about where we get plants and we NEVER bring other garden soil in without checking it thoroughly!! I don't want a repeat go round with those things!! As I said, I have no idea why it worked. My mother suggested it and I tried it. Maybe an expert could tell us. All I know is I was at my wits end and I was willing to try anything! I was even thinking of salting my entire garden, using alkaline salts from sloughs near the city. Now, that desperation!! But then, I am told I am a rather "crazy" gardener!! I grow roses in raised boxes. I have some of the biggest Japanese Butter Burr you will ever see in SK and instead of grass, I have rug! Yep! My garden is a sight to see! Heather, I'm relieved to find out that diatomaceous earth does not harm earthworms. It makes sense that DE would last in the soil for decades, since fossils don't decay quickly, but the directions tell us to renew the application following rain or watering. Hmmm. That wouldn't be just so we'll buy more DE, would it?? Safer's Slug and Snail Bait works for me, too. Don't know why I forgot to mention it in an earlier post. Probably because I don't see the gratifyingly instant results that I do with ammonia. I used to go slug hunting, late at night, armed with a flashlight, long-handled tweezers and a bucket of boiling water. (I'm surprised the neighbours never called the police! I must have looked quite suspicious!!) I'd pluck the beasts off my plants and watch them disintegrate when I dropped each one into the bucket. I knew the water needed reheating whenever I saw slugs start to escape up the sides. After a night of hunting, I disposed of the carcasses in the back alley, so the birds would have a feast the next day. Once, however, I guess the water had cooled off too much by the time I had caught the last batch for the night. I threw the slug water into the back alley and went to bed. The next day, my DH went to the alley for some reason, and he soon called me over. Not only had many slugs survived the "hot" bath, but all of them were crawling back towards my yard!!! Needless to say, they didn't make it. ;o)

gardens dress accordingly .. and go play in the dirt ... whats this nonsense about too dirty .. if you dont have mud in your eyebrows.. in your hair.. and gritting in your teeth.. you are a gardener.. btw ... this is the type of thing i would do at the very last.. just before heading into to the laundry room to throw everything i was wearing in the washer ... and then up to the shower ... its not the job you want to do first .. lol .. of course.. i only lander the garden clothes.. when they stand up in the corner by themselves because there is so much dirt encrusted on them .. lol .. when too encrusted.. its hard to bend your knees.. lol ... ken

hl - in the meantime, I've found that Bobbex-R helps, and is a little more effective and longer lasting than Liquid Fence. Last spring I put chicken wire around some plantings that included hostas, deutzias and fothergillas. They were all being eaten by the rabbits. I think once those shrubs get larger and with more woody growth it gets a little better - at least that's what I've found with my Rose of Sharon, and a few others.... Eventually this summer I took the chicken wire down, and they are leaving the shrubs alone, as well as the larger/more mature hostas. But some of the newly-planted hostas are still being eaten, especially if I don't reapply the Bobbex soon enough. This fall, when it's cool enough, I'm going to place chicken wire around the inside of my "potting shed" - it's the space under my deck, which DH fixed up for me, surrounded with lattice and a door, shelves and potting table : ) That's where they are hiding on my property, and I think I'll take Deb's advice and bury the bottom edges! It won't keep the chipmunks or birds out, but will probably work for the rabbits. Allison - those dogs are adorable! My lab is 14 years old, and not much of a deterrent at this point.

OK, OK, I admit it, I did not realize that Hosta's actually got that big. I do have some in my garden, but never needed a space for a big one. I seen pictures at Dave's garden and the leaves are 2-3 times as big as a hand!!

Ken, I really like the looks of the plantaginea and it states it glows in the dark and hummingbirds love it.

I guess that I need to restate my original question.
It will get some afternoon sun, but not constant afternoon sun, no more than 2 hours.
Yes, I have found slugs in my yard, but I DO have hosta's they do not seem to bother.
Maybe I would much rather have a hosta that the leaves get about the size of a hand, with tall scapes (white flowers), attractive to hummingbirds. Around 3 ft. tall would be nice and around 24 in. mound.

Ken, I may be dumb about hosta's, but please don't put an exclamation point on it. I felt like you were laughing at me and at the same time announcing it to anyone reading.

please do not interpret my exuberance about hosta with laughing at you .. forgive me for such

please also note.. we have a plethora of newbies involved .... and do understand.. that when i reply i am replying to everyone .... ESPECIALLY the newbies ... i TRY [always a key word] to start at the beginning and work through the solution... i understood you were at a design level [far beyond most]... matching your two plants ... but i still explained about slugs from the beginning [e.g. claims of slug-proofed-ness].. and worked through to your solution or suggestion ... in NO WAY was the synthesis done to make you feel like you didnt know what you were doing ...

ANYWAY.. you will love plantiginea .... EVERYONE has to have it ... DONT worry about slugs ... they are easily taken care of if some plague should hit ...

PS: and for the rest of you ... earl grey tea is based on bergamot... which i seem to recall is monarda ... go figure on that ... but for the horrible mildew native to the plant.. i would probably have some around.. though it does tend to wander around the garden ... the smell of the crushed leaves is heavenly ... i wonder why it didnt make it in the 1500 pots i moved here.. hmmmm...
