baby gardener wants to save the hostas
Comments (3)I only saw a couple of hosta and a LOT of poison ivy. Don your heavy gloves and dig the hosta out and plant it somewhere "clean". Then go and clean out all that poison ive and next spring replant the hosta if that's where you want them Bottom line, dig out the hosta you want to save and then dig or Round Up the bad weeds. Comments (44)"as Ken stated at the first of this thread, most of us don't divide hostas." As I stated most have us have moved AND divided hostas. QUICK bkay, back to the originator of this thread concern - "Is this the time of year to do this? Any hints for success?" Your answer to me: quote "Who cares? Divide them. They're yours and you can do whatever you want with them." PLEASE tell me, bkay, how your statement, which goes directly to huckdog's simple question, enhances discussion and is "safe". I view your statement as only slightly less disparaging and intimidating as ken's 'we don't move or divide, we buy more, you stupid newbie'. "most of us don't think they need it. Period. End of sentence. " Do you mean end of discussion? huckdog DID NOT ask what most of us are doing. AGAIN, I say most of us have moved and divided hosta. "A good debate doesn't include name calling." Name calling like "snotty" and "condescending" and other clearly implied derogations like "obvious that you don't really know much about hostas"??? Apparently that is acceptable!! "We try to make this a safe place for hosta lovers and for people to ask questions. " Yet you said NOTHING when bully ken disparaged, demeaned, ridiculed an excellent 100% legitimate question by a self-described newbie to hostas! You action/inaction speak louder than your words. Yes, huckdog, early fall is an EXCELLENT time to move and divide hostas....See MoreHelp with hosta move
Comments (9)This is the issue most often: Moving them vs them looking good. I gave up the NEED to have my garden look perfect in every corner years ago when I "just had to" move this hosta over there and divide that hosta so I could have some of it over here. Unless you are digging and dividing almost before you know where everything is in your garden..you have to accept that the hosta you move/divide will look anything but GREAT until NEXT YEAR. My personal rule was move/divide before mid June or after August. This is when the chances are GREATEST no one but you will notice the moved hosta is not all it can be. Well of course the Sept. divisions look AWFUL, leggy, loss of turgidity..tape holding the up..BUT it is not for long at that point and the roots need time before freeze to settle in!! The only REAL answer to your frustration is, you should have moved said hosta last fall....See MoreMoving hostas now or wait till spring
Comments (18)Agree on noway the hosta is doing anything negative to bulbs. I do a lot of dividing and moving in September. August is too hot and dry, as a rule, in my world. As long as you move/divide them 6 weeks before hard freeze they will be fine. I was doing this more back when that guy Ken gave reference to, originally posted his tutorial. It never fails. The only new consideration I might add, that type of host is a fast grower. What you divide this season you will be repeating. What I had fun doing when I began my hosta journey and what I care to do now are not the same. You might want to consider finding a hosta that when fully mature, won't look crowded to you. (another thing I gleaned from the a fore mentioned guys teachings)...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
