Although I have never tried the fruit, Peterson's MEDICINAL PLANTS AND HERBS lists it as edible..."approved in Germany for nervous restlessness..." etc., just what we all need. They actually said the entire plant, roots and all, was edible, but at the end of the write up: "Potentially harmful in large amounts." There was also the caution icon next to the write up. I would check it out more before trying. I did see one of my mt. friends eat an azalea gall and some lichens, neither of which I would try UNLESS I was lost in the woods and starving. (And I don't harvest mushrooms, either. Not a risk taker I.)

Nice choices! I have all but the macadamia, what variety did you get and why? I have been eyeing an arkin papershell for a while now but I read that mac's are poor producers in south florida. Which variety sapodilla did you get? I have a small alano. My advice for the ice cream is ti treat it like a teenager who is always hungry and thirsty and for the fig the planting area needs to be well amended as it attracts nematodes.

If you're asking about fruit that is edible for humans, there are blackberries, a couple kinds of raspberries, wild strawberries, elderberry, blueberries, huckleberries, grapes and probably a couple I am leaving out. All of these can be grown in gardens. Typically you'll see cultivars, hybrids, or non-native species of these sold for gardens, but the native species could be grown. I think I'd choose garden cultivars of blackberry and raspberries if I was going to grow them in a garden, and I guess the same goes for all the others. If I was going to grow them in a wild setting, I would choose the native species. If you are talking about fruits for wildlife, there are tons of good choices. Many species of viburnum are good. Dogwoods (several species in PA) are great, as are several species of cherry. I think there are almost too many to list.
