Mediterranean vegetables planting times

Hello

I am new to this site. I am currently growing in Wales, UK but making the move to France, Pyrenees Orientales in USDA zone 9.

Most of the postings on this forum I read were focussed mostly on ornamental plants or fruit trees, but I was wondering if anyone can share experience with growing vegetables in this zone.

I am specifically interested in how the planting/ harvesting times change, what plants you cannot grow there that you can grow in the UK, and also which mediterranean veggies you can grow there which will not succeed elsewhere.

How do the hot summers affect our common veggies, and do I need to worry about the strong Northern wind in winter?

Anyone has any suggestions?

It is going to depend hugely where exactly you will be in the PO. In the Aude (next door) the following are a few things from memory from my own garden (I don't use a polytunnel (plenty of people do) and I try to keep watering to a minimum):
Tomatoes - plants in the ground early May (although many leave it until the end of the month), harvest late June/early July onwards
Peppers - plants in the ground early May, harvest August/September
Aubergines - plants in the ground May, harvest September
Runner beans - sow direct May, harvest June/July
Shallots - plant late February, harvest early July
Jerusalem artichokes - sowed April, harvest whenever
Broad beans - sow direct November, harvest April, second crop sow late Feb/March and harvest May
Onions - sow November
Leeks - plant-out November
Garlic - sow November, lifted June
Radishes/most salads - year round but difficult to prevent many bolting in the summer, Rocket is pretty much just a winter crop (although I've heard the same in some parts of the UK)
All Mediterranean herbs are (obviously) easy, but chervil, dill, sorrel etc. require far too much water so far as I am concerned. Chives, mints, salad burnet thrive through to May and re-appear in the autumn. Parsley/coriander again pretty much year-round but require a lot of water in the summer. I sow basil in March/April but it self-seeds pretty freely.
(Sweet) Corn is a fodder crop here.

Generally speaking the cold northern winds aren't a great problem but so much will depend upon how close you are to the coast/what altitude you will be gardening and how much you are prepared to water. I don't grow melons but my neighbough gave me a few of his early in mid-July this year.

It would still help to know where you are gardening if you would like more pertinent climate specific plant recommendations. Unless you are up in the Sierra Nevada foothills at sufficient elevation to receive significant snowfall, it is also highly unlikely you are receiving 6 feet of rain in an average year. Kentfield in Marin County is one of the local wettest spots in the SF Bay Area, and even they don't get this much rain. The normal range of precipitation is more in the 20 to 40 inches range for coastal northern California, unless you are getting particular increased rainfall from mountain uplift rain effect as Kentfield or Ben Lomond do. There are quite a few Western Cape species that are well adapted to seasonally wet/saturated winter soils that later dry out in summer, so winter wet soils are not the problem. The majority of these plants will not take hard frost in combination with winter wet, as they are lower elevation or coastal in habitat. The higher elevation plants from the Drakensberg Mountains are dry in winter and wet in summer, so you will also have to be more careful of providing good winter drainage for anything from there, although most plants from this summer rainfall/high elevation mountains will be more winter cold adapted.

Here is a "recipe" that uses figs. It was in my email from Arcamax and it is from Wolf Gang Puck. Honestly I haven't tried it (or figs for that matter) but it sounds interesting for you venture-some soles out there: GRILLED FIG AND PROSCIUTTO SALAD Serves 4 SHERRY-DIJON VINAIGRETTE 3 tablespoons sherry vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup almond oil or safflower oil Sea salt Freshly ground white pepper SALAD 4 thin slices prosciutto 1 head fris lettuce (chicory or curly endive), leaves separated, rinsed, thoroughly dried and torn into bite-sized pieces 1 head Belgian endive, leaves separated, rinsed and thoroughly dried 1 head radicchio, leaves separated, rinsed, thoroughly dried and cut crosswise into thin julienne 1 shallot, peeled and very thinly sliced 4 ripe fresh Mission figs 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Sea salt 1 small block Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, 3 to 4 ounces 1 leaf fresh sage, rolled lengthwise and cut crosswise to form thin ribbons Freshly ground black pepper Preheat an outdoor or indoor grill. Meanwhile, make the vinaigrette. In a mixing bowl, stir together the vinegar and mustard. While whisking continuously, drizzle in the oils until thoroughly blended. Season to taste with salt and white pepper and set aside. You should have about 1-1/4 cups, enough for this salad and several other recipes. Store the remaining dressing in a covered container in the refrigerator. When the grill or broiler is hot, begin preparing the salad. First, drape each slice of prosciutto in the middle of a chilled salad plate. Arrange the frisÃ©e, endive, radicchio and shallot on top, taking care not to conceal the prosciutto completely, and set aside. Rub the figs with the 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sprinkle them lightly with sea salt. Carefully place them near the cooler edges of the grill's cooking grid and cook them, turning with tongs, just until they are evenly marked all over with dark brown grill marks but not yet cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes total cooking time. Immediately cut each fig lengthwise into quarters and arrange the fig quarters on top of each plate. Drizzle each serving with about 1-1/2 tablespoons of the Sherry-Dijon Vinaigrette. Using a cheese plane or a swivel-bladed vegetable peeler, lightly shave some Parmesan on top of each plate; you'll only need about 1 ounce total for 4 servings, but it's easier to shave that amount from a larger block of cheese. BinsB How GREAT! I'd guess by now the 'kids' are knocking from the outside - yes? Paleese post a pic if you can. We'd all (I'm sure) love to see your accomplishments :-))) after waiting soooo long. Love the orange colors of the nursery but mmm - are they really going to sleep in one crib? :-)) Just kidding. When you have time, which likely won't be for awhile I'm sure, would love to see the nursery with the paper flowers, et al. Not to worry about the non-span house of present. It's the spirit inside that can carry it thru. Imagine what a tough time I have in my location. LOL!! You'll have lotsa fun (when/if you can find the time) doing some special stuff in your new abode. Trop - hmmm pictures this year? LOL! That will be fun to see. I'll look forward (but won't hold my breath too awfully long). :-))) I'm thinking maybe you just eliminated the kitchen altogether and are doing take out now? Houseful it's great to have you posting again. hardy plants for inland dry Mediterranean garden

You might consider plants from the American Southwest or northern Mexico as good plants to try. Agave parryi immediately comes to mind, and other dramatic succulents such as Dasylirion wheeleri or D. longissisma are dramatic accents. Hesperaloe parviflora is good in your conditions, and the various Leucophyllum species can be spectacular in bloom, especially if you do get some occasional summer rain, which triggers many into blooming. Other accents might include palms such as Brahea armata Some of the more colorful groundcovering plants might include Salvia greggii, various Dalea species such as D. pulchra or D. greggii,Verbenas such as V. rigida, Oenothera berlandieri, Stachys coccinea, and Zauschneria californica. If you are into cactus, Opuntia violacea Santa Rita is a fabulous purple foliage color, and O. basilaris is also nice and manageable. Several of our native grasses such as Muhlenbergia dumosa, M. rigens, and M. linderheimerii are good choices Our ndesert native Mallow, Spharalcea ambigua is also great in both heat and winter cold. You might find it interesting to look for the book called "Low Water-Use Plants for California and the Southwest, by Carol Shuler, or visit the web site for Mountain States Growers Nursery in Arizona to get more info on some of the plants I've mentioned. Unfortunately, you are too cold in winter for using some of my favorite Mexican and South African succulents as hardy garden plants. Most of the succulents I use in various garden designs here in the San Francisco Bay Area are only hardy with light frosts, not severe ones. You might also find it instructive to look at the web site for the Ruth Bancroft Gardens in Walnut Creek, California. This garden uses many plants especially adapted for dry summer heat and regular winter freezes, but also takes protective measures to build winter structures to allow growing those plants that aren't fully hardy to the area, which can get down to 14F in winter, as compared to minimums of only 24F in my more coastal influenced Berkeley garden.
