Australian Native Plants

Eucalyptus deglupta seed,

I have been trying to find seed for Eucalyptus deglupta for some time, as this is one of the few Eucalypt's not native to Australia it is very hard to find, can anyone help me?

I've got a couple of hundred different seeds to trade if anyone is intrested or even just let me know where I might get some

If you find any let me know I have been looking for them as well. There are some places in Florida to buy the trees. They will ship them, but I have not found any seeds yet.

Since they are used for pulpwood in the Phils, ICRAF Mindanao may be able to put you onto a seed source.

The Rainbow Eucalypt is native to west of the Wallace line i.e. Indonesia and western Mindanao, therefore Zamboanga City rather than Bukidnon though the Botanists may put my provenance right on this.

Because they are relatively free of essential oils these rainforest Eucs do not explode as firebombs like those no-no 'gumtrees' in the big fires in Calif a year ago, Oct 08.

Raising Eucalyptus deglupta in a cool frost-free (sub)tropical climate

Update: Eucalyptus deglupta that I raised several dozen of and only this past winter I planted 6 of them into the ground at an elevation of around 150 m above sea level, into a poor "soil". They did not grow too large in their pots over the past 5 years. After clearing an acre or so of shrubby woods with an excavator I was struggling to find some soil to purchase in order to cover the field. The soil I covered it with by just a barely a foot or so is very poor and has a lot of volcanic "gravel" in it mostly, stones and clay. It is dug up from down deep so it has got no organic matter yet. Finally the 6 x "Arcoiris" (Rainbow Eucalyptus) are in the ground and are slowly growing. Some showing deep, red foliage and some green foliage. The bark is still mostly light brown with some opened up patches of light green. They should show more colour when the trunks grow to at least 10-15 cm thickness if they will have tropicals colours here at all. Will see how their bark will look after several more years, whether all brownish and light green or will show some more tropical colours such as orange, red and especially blue. I will post an update then and now here are some photos of the pot-grown ones after 5 years (they grow very slowly in the pots): Anyone growing these in Portugal or Spain please post up close photos of the bark of larger E.d. (Eucalypto arcoiris) trees if possible.

I got my foot tall seedling snapped in half by strong winds. It is in the pot outdoors for the past several months. I have 12 of them in pots outdoors and 1 of them got broken in half when placed in the corner outdoors, but it was not separated so I repaired it with tape. I wonder how these trees grow in New Zealand, Lord Howe Island or your country and do they survive hurricane winds? I live in a heat zone that I would describe as zero or 1, but the hardiness zone is 11B. Also I would guess one has to allow up to 200 ft. to plant it away from the house or any valuable structure or street. Does anyone have experiences these trees toppling over or breaking in high winds?
