how to clean an orchid with hard water residue
Comments (10)Lime or calcium (hard water) deposits on a plant's leaves don't interfere with photosynthesis. However, to remove them, a tablespoon of white vinegar and a quart of distilled water will remove it. (Apply with a soft sponge or cloth and let sit for five to ten minutes..then wipe off with a clean wet cloth, dipped in just the distilled water). The acid from the vinegar will dissolve calcium and lime. The yellow round "spots" could be from past scale damage. Plastic pots are fine, but it depends on what kind of media and how often you water. Bark mixes break down quickly (in a warm, humid environment like Florida or parts of Hawaii) it can be a year or even less (if left outdoors, and doused with afternoon rain). Such bark mixes do better in clay pots. Growers in Florida often use Hydroton or clay pellets. Or lava rock. Some use granite chips or small stones. These non-organic media can be used with plastic pots. Some growers have had success with red ceder chips: the tannins in the cedar (like redwood) don't break down as quickly as fir bark. There is also treated pinus radiata or Monterrey Pine bark. If you plant in a non-organic mix like clay pellets or rock, then you can simply keep the plant in the old pot, and place it in a bigger one, and back fill with more of that same potting mix. Not true with bark or organic mixes, which break down, and cause roots to rot. Tree fern, hardwood charcoal, perlite are good additions to a cattleya potting mix....See MoreBlack residue on new stainless steel cookware
Comments (25)I've had this happen with ANYTHING made of stainles steel, when it's been scrubbed, for at least the last 30 years. My kitchen sink, cookie sheets, skillets, etc. I've had many of the things for over 30 years, so it's not because they're "new" or "coated". After scrubbing I always wipe then with paper towels until the black residue is more or less gone, and then rinse and dry once more. I don't want whatever it is in my food. I contacted Scotch-Brite because their green scrubbers are what I usually use, and I hope to hear back from then in a couple of days. Somebody somewhere must know... I'm just so glad to see this thread about it. I haven't been able to find an answer -- or even find it mentioned -- anywhere else....See MoreRemoving glue residue from wallpaper
Comments (3)It might not be all glue, it could be the seams of the paper itself. Most wallpaper is printed on top of a white back and if your seams are not super tight, the white edge of the paper shows. Professional paper hangers often overlap the edges of the paper slightly and do what is called a double cut through both layers of paper so that the seams are really tight. If that is the problem, there are some tricks you could try. One is to get a small amount (a quart is usually the smallest) of acrylic paint matched to the main color of your paper and rub that lightly into the seam to help stain the white edge. I have used eyeliner on black paper, worked well. If it is just glue, you could try a solution of TSP and hot water. As well as DIF there is a product called GooGone that might work for you as well. As javiwa said, test on a scrap of paper first to make sure it does not damage or remove the color in your paper as well, and work gently....See MoreSoapstone Wax Residue Turning it Yellow!?
Comments (19)Hi Catie, I had to chime in when reading this! We're kind of the soapstone pro's on the West Coast :-) The yellow/gold inclusions are actually Iron Pyrite deposits. It's a mineral that is embedded in the stone when it formed. You'll find them in a lot of Soapstone. They're also in Calacatta Marble. In fact, a lot of people want them in there marble, specifically because they're kind of an emblem of Authentic Calacatta from Italy. They tend to be more dark silver, where the ones in soapstone are more gold. Check out our Blog entry with more photos....See Morenathanhurst
