How to clean pet residue/stains on old hardwoods under carpet
Comments (6)Here is how I have dealt with a similar situation. The POs were covering up damage on oak hardwoods with area rugs. I am guessing that in addition to their petÂs accidents, they shampooed the area rug in place which further damaged the floors. We found out about the damage two hours before closing on the house during the final walk-through. This is a very temporary solution and is not the correct way to fix the damage; the experts on this board can advise you how to do that. Wash the floor on your hands and knees (or sitting on the floor using a small amount of water, MurphyÂs oil soap, scrub brushes, scrubbies, and old terry towels- whatever it takes to clean the floor. Do a small section at a time, and rinse with clear water using a clean towel and dry each section thoroughly as you go along. Be careful with the waterÂdonÂt pour it onÂyou donÂt want to cause more damage than is already there. This will take a long time as you will be crawling around the floor. With a damp sponge mop using water and vinegar, rinse again. Remember while you need the water to clean the floor, water also damages the floor. DonÂt let pooling water sit on the floor. Dry it with a towel. On the stains you can try several things to at least lighten the color of the damaged spots. I used a combo of lightly sanding and household bleach. The stains have not disappeared, but they are lighter and cleaner. Wait till the next day or several hours to be sure the floor is completely dry and temporarily fill in the spots where the poly is gone due to damage of pet stains, water and sanding/bleaching by judiciously using a small amount of wipe-on-poly. Wipe-on-poly is for furniture and is not recommended for floors, but a small amount can fill in and blend the areas where the floor poly is completely gone. After the poly is completely dry, use a shine product. I used Holloway House Quick Shine for about $9.00 (Orange Glow does not work). I have added a few throw rugs and the floor looks about 50% better and will get me buy until I can have the floors refinished....See MoreHow do I identify residue in water supply
Comments (3)Within a municipality both the water supplier and the sewage treatment facilities are required to repeatedly test the potable water in the municipal supply or the discharge water from the waste treatment facility throughout the day, and to that end they have their own inhouse testing labs. In most jurisdictions those labs also perform private well water tests for the county Health department to certify private wells in areas outside the municipal water district. Call you local health department and tell them you would like to get a test and they can set it up for you or tell you who to contact. I just worked on a house that had been vacant for 3 years with water in the system so we decided to have the water tested to see if we could sanitize the system before startup. The county healt department told us to call the lab at the sewage treatment plant. The lab had us come to their location and pick up sterilized sample bottles. They carefully explained how to flush the system then take the samples and return the samples to the lab. Two days later I had an extrememly thorough test report, all for the exhorbitant sum of $29....See Moreclean hard-water scale with salt water?
Comments (7)Acids dissolve bases. Use a vinegar, grapefruit juice or the like to break down calcium build up on plumbing fixtures. However, some build up is so long standing that even staniless steel will be dmaged. Nothing will cure this problem. I would stay away from anti-freeze or other products not recommended for plumbing, especially for drinking water, fixtures. No, RO water for rediators may not be the best. RO water can be aggressive and cause some corrosion. All RO water is not the same, even from the same machine at different times. The principals are similar but incoming water quality (TDS), pressure and temperature can vary RO permeate water quality. pH can also play a very importtant role. Quality and age of membrane makes a big differene. There are many fators that determine water quality. Andy Christensen, CWS-II...See MoreNew toilet - how to keep clean (hard water stains)?
Comments (23)So I had done some re-plumbing on my house and installed a water softener loop at the time - meaning it was mostly ready to go. The unit sits on the floor. Many people useflex lines with sharkbite fittings to connect them to make the installation easier. I'm not a huge fan of that... but it does simplify things a lot. You may need some drain hose as well. Look at the photos and read the reviews to see some of the installs on Amazon. There is a photo of my install on there - but know that my install was part of a complete re-do, so don't use that as an example. There are lots of youtube videos on it including putting in the correct settings on the Fleck valve....See More- 10 years ago
