We live near to Cambridge and dug our pond in summer 2005 and quickly had loads of frogs that were quickly swallowed by the first heron that sniffed us out.

I have now strung fishing line around the perimeter and although the herons visited once more, we have not seen them since, so our resident frog and 4 small fish have survived.

Water is pumped from the bottom end to run down the slate through and the channel.

There is a lined "bog" which can be seen with the concrete otter loitering.

I would welcome any suggestions about improving it, other than filling in and starting again.

I haven't seen any herons yet this year, but a local birdwatching site has had a flurry. I wonder if this means the frogs are beginning to move.
It will be iinteresting to see how much spawn you get this year- keep a note of frog numbers and clumps of spawn and dates so you can compare future years.

Froglife do a survey each year of the frogs activities and clumps of spawn etc so it is a good idea to keep a record of how many you got. I count them as they are laid because after a while they all lay next to each other and they blend into one big clump, so it is impossible to see how many you have had by that time.
Can you show us any different angles of your pond. I think it will give us a better idea and will help us to make suggestions. Also what are the dimensions etc.
I can see you are also growing from seeds at the bottom of the garden. Are you growing veg or flowers.
What a shame about the Heron. They are such a beautiful bird up close but they have big appetites and can soon wipe you out. I am lucky as we have an RSPB reserve about 6 miles away where there are plenty of Herons and plenty for them to eat. I don't think their flight path is over my garden, but my sister in law lives about 3 miles closer and they have once stopped at her neighbours pond and eaten the fish.

Hi Jack, With the clear polycarb, I have had a problem with the rounded ("Roma") profile at distances to around 1-2 metres from it, because the rounded sections act like a lens and focus the sunlight into narrow bands that are quite a bit more intense than the sunlight itself, while the areas between the bands are a lot darker - not a good combination for sensitive plants! I still found this a problem with 30% and 50% shadecloth inside the clear polycarb (so it doesn't get creamed by falling branches), but haven't tried it with the shadecloth outside - maybe that would disperse the light sufficiently. What I did end up doing was changing to flat section ("Greca") for clear polycarb, because it doesn't concentrate the light to anywhere near the same extent as the rounded section. The difference between the two is very obvious if you hold a sample of rounded and a sample of flat next to each other in the sun in a clear sky and look at the shadows they cast. NB it isn't a problem with any of the coloured polycarbs, because the pigment diffuses the light pretty well and stops it from concentrating. I don't know if you have come across anything similar, but I thought I should pass it on. It drove me mad years ago trying to work out why I had some native Dendrobium bigibbum orchids burning behind a clear polycarb wall when they should have been, and had been, quite happy with full sun. I thought I should do a follow up on Faraway Flowers. Just got my order yesterday and I was particularly pleased not only with the quality of bulbs, but also the size. The shipping was delayed because of inclement weather, and as a customer I was notified promptly. I ordered each of the Japanese (OT) Hybrids from them and they were enormous bulbs. 24 cm as advertised. I also received a couple of the double orientals and was particularly pleased at the quality (compared to the gift I was given for Christmas from Dutch Gardens of the double oriental mix, which two of them came soft and compost-worthy :(). The roots from Dutch Gardens, came, as per usual, shriveled up. The ones from Faraway Flowers had active root systems, as if they were just dug and sent the day before. I was pleasantly surprised (and I love that). For those of you familiar with Buggy Crazy, that was the size of bulbs these Japanese Hybrids were. I was very impressed with this company and hope to shower you all with fabulous photos this summer of my great finds from my favorite lily growers and vendors. Good. You'll have to fight the usual problem that most have when starting out. That is the battle to stay focused against the battle to stay busy. You'll be tempted to diversify in order to get more work while specializing reduces overhead and keeps you efficient. Maintenance is a great way to get busy quickly and get introduced to a lot of people. It is a good way to build a captive market (in other words, you'll be the first they'll call when they want something more). The difficulty is that it can suck up most of your time during a week which limits your ability to take on bigger projects because you can't get them done in a timely manner. In the end, it is more profitable to be able to sell marked up product along with your hours, so installation is more profitable. It is harder to make a years income selling only seasonal hours of only yourself. I might suggest that a part time job unrelated to the green industry might work well because you will not have to worry about having competing interests with your employer. Always look to provide services that are not generic enough to be of little value. Although your time is valuable to you, the price a consumer will put on it is related to how much they want it done and how much they want it done by somebody else. Be valuable and you will be valued.

The big gits took about 15 of my fish last year, my wife chased it off but too late to save them, i only had 3 after it had finished! Its best to try to make your pond as secure as possible to prevent this from happening.
