The winds were so bad in South Carolina and Georgia that we could hardly keep the Jeep in the road on the way home and when we got into the metro part of Atlanta, no power and no way to get gas as you have to have power to pump gas. Finally, we made it near Auburn where there was power and got gas (whew)before running out. Good thing we had gassed completely up in South Carolina. I have had weather this bad and the good part of it is (and this time of year as well) that you have some water. Most of my roses got more diseased from insects when we had drought. That was when I found the RRD and the spider mites, which thrive on hot, dry. You will have another flush of roses, you might not be able to get that rain again. I don't want the death and destruction that was part of what some areas got Saturday and Sunday, but I sure could use some rain, drought here for about 3 years now.

OT: My cat came home for New Year's!

Sorry, I just had to add my dog story since I thought about your cat coming home several times today. Have to use a map/clock description in this one. This took place in Houston. Thirty years ago I had an assistant at work. She lived in an apartment but let her dog out during the day. Say she lived a 12 o'clock on a clock. A neighbor decided the dog needed a "better" home so took it and gave it to someone who lived at 6 o'clock about 20 miles away. The owner cried a lot as she looked in vain for her dog. Finally the neighbor confessed. They called to tell the new owner they were coming to get the dog. And found out that the dog was missing. A week later the boyfriend, who lived at 2 o'clock called and said, "You're not going to believe this, but your dog just showed up." If was worn from the trip but otherwise OK. The amazing thing is that the dog had been to the boyfriend's house only once before. Figure that one out. Bob

Rain at last ! A cool walk in the garden helped my attitude :)

Won't mention our rain here, might make you envious. But I was happy to see a day without it for a chance. Now I can walk around and maybe cut the lawn tomorrow and look civilized again. Always have been fond of a rainy day, the usual or historic weather pattern for summer here was "scattered afternoon thunderstorms," and nothing had to be hand watered. Now we never know what to expect. Feast or famine. I have one hosta especially that kicked into overdrive with all the rain---Fragrant Dream. It might need a new pot before the season ends. But won't mess with it until after it blooms. Another few days and we have the longest day of the year, when the sun is at its most northerly point, and the shade under my south shade plants is at a minimum. The hosta scrooched together there are larger than they were when first potted up, and I watch for any communicable diseases in any of them. Tomorrow after I cut the grass, I figure it will be dry enough to broadcast more slug get-um stuff.
