Rain at last ! A cool walk in the garden helped my attitude :)

I have been painting an old truck, at a friends shop.. When it broke out the sprinkles, then rained solid for an hour or two I was so relieved. Both the Hosta gardener, and the farmers have been desperate for a good drink of rain water in the soil.

I came home tired and dirty from my project.. but walked slowly along the line to see the plants reaching out, trying to grab every drop they could.

The chill water on my head and clothes felt like heaven.. I think I know how the plants feel now...

Wonderful feeling. THAT's what plants are for...making you feel good. They do that for me too...and I've had some BIG catastrophies happen in my life, but the hostas are still there. Gets your head on straight. Good.

Leafwatcher, we also had a very nice rain. .80 inches yesterday and has been raining gently for about two hrs!

Hostas are looking much happier than they were Thursday afternoon when it was hot and windy.

Well, thank you for your kind words. I am very blessed to have a lovely, lovely piece of property in a wonderful neighborhood with a perfect climate. We pinch ourselves every day that we are so fortunate. As far as intensively planting fruit trees - depends on the type of tree. With stone fruits, you can get away with one-hole planting if you're a good pruner. Not so much with citrus. They need their own "space", even if it's tight. If you're considering intensive planting with citrus, I would strongly recommend truly dwarfing rootstocks ('Flying Dragon' if you can find it, or at the least, Cuban Shaddock, which is what Four Winds puts most of their trees on). Boy, it is really hard to limit my trees to just the 5 favorites. Here is the list of what I really, really love in my yard, not in any top to bottom order: Seedless Kishu Mandarin Ponkan Mandarin California Honey Mandarin Page Mandarin (nothing beats it for juice) Moro Orange Tarocco Orange Wekiwa Tangelolo Valentine Pommelo hybrid Cocktail Pommelo hybrid Melogold/Oroblanco grapefruit hybrid Jan Boyce Avocado Reed Avocado Comice Pear Seckel Pear Any of my 3 different Fuji apples (Fuji, Red Fuji, Myra Fuji) Spice Zee Necatplum Artic Star Necatrine Royal Lee Cherry Any of my flat peento peaches (several varieties) Ronde de Bordeaux fig Panache fig Just to name a few :-) I would strongly urge you to join your local CRFG Chapter. Find out who is your real fruit tree guru in your chapter. See if you can find someone in the chapter that has done what you want to do. It really, really helps to have someone to pattern after, and have as a sounding board. You should have a fairly active chapter up in SF. In fact, there are some rather famous citrus hobbyist growers up in N. California that you might want to make sure you visit, if your CRFG chapter has any tours set up. bump for Dougald. Thank you for introducing me to this book, Dougald. There is no email address on your GWeb profile page, so I hope you see this add-on to the thread. I'm in process of reading the book. It is not one you read quickly, so I read a chapter and think about it. The addition of rocks and mountains is something I'll have to think about for a long time. It is the way they also incorporate water into the garden. Since things are always symbolic of other things, I trust it will be in line with the Chinese style to find a suitable work-around in my garden. It won't be classical, but it will be as close a substitute as my location (and budget and capabilities) allow. I'm at that chapter about Chinese landscape art--paintings or scrolls, not actually in the garden--and that is where I'm lingering for a while. It must look natural even though contrived. What for me to do! I get the ideas of "borrowing views" and creating long views, multiple changing vantage points with openings in the shrubs and trees, always framing a lovely prospect. Some architecture....provided by my Teahouse wall, the new latticed screen going in to break up the western sunlight and block the glare of two noxious street lights uninvited to the scene. Of course there are no large expanses of land here. Mine would be no imperial site since it forms a personal and private garden on a city lot. By Friday afternoon, the tall latticed 40 foot wide screen will be installed, and I can proceed to prettying up the last section of my walled garden. I am adding no gates....that is mentioned in this book too...but instead I am locating objects or features which will be framed in the two gateways and serve to invite one into the garden. Of the two views through the openings in the latticed screen, one is of a crape myrtle (now in bloom) beside a pole with a bluebird nestbox on it. I will be able to see the comings and goings of the bluebirds building their nests and feeding their young, from the low deck off our bedroom. The other opening serves to reveal the darker territory beneath a sasanqua (camellia) where I recently located a white (plastic) tiered fountain. This fountain will not have water but will have ferns and tall spraying liriope planted, with pots of small hosta nestled in their midst. A Limelight hydrangea will provide more greenish white flower balls in that vicinity as well. This ungated opening near the door to the Teahouse is also visible from the deck off the back of our house, be it from the spot off our bedroom, or the area behind my kitchen. The entire back of our house--when the remodel is done--will be a wall of glass. It gives me an uncompromised view of the garden through the latticed screen....and privacy from all outside eyes. Except maybe for the small aircraft which pass overhead. So thank you Dougald. I hope you see this. The book is delightful.

Dry rootballs are often the result of textural differences between the soilless potting medium or claylike field soil the plants came from the nursery in and the soil on the new site. If the rest of the bed was moist with the heucheras only being dry then it was something like that - something involving the heucheras specifically - and not the overall conditions. This should have been apparent when these were dug and pulled apart(?) but heucheras specifically are prone to weevil larvae gnawing the roots off and leaving a sort of nearly rootless husk sitting on top of the ground, unable to keep itself turgid without diligent watering - and maybe not even then. The same thing is common here with primroses.

Thanks everyone and what a warm day it turned out yesterday after all that fog it got to 31degs. I love the damp foggy mornings also not that we get many here. Dee the garden is just about finished now though I did make a new bed for my Gerbera a few weeks back and I am thinking of another Rose bed but no more roses just giving them more space. We got 1200 used pavers given to us on Tuesday ( exchanged for hard yakka ) so I can see a few new raised beds getting made for extra vegies.. Hi Macbirch...I have a lot of Gerbera's now and those doubles are so beautiful and last a long time in the vase. Marion do you get Misty morning's like this..How is that packing going... Dear Rosalie::: No I have not mastered it yet..though I am trying hard between library books and video's and all those camera forums on the Internet...Today being a special day for me we are going into the big smoke to my favourite toy shop and Tony is going to buy me either another memory card two big ones are not enough for me or maybe a filter ??? Then there is that book shop, O decisions decisions but I will come back with something. Sorry I dont know the name of the Plumbago as I found it in a pile of rubbish when we bought this block it is not a really bright blue......Cheers...MM.

Trudy I was to dirty for the hat ! and we managed to squeeze nearly two inches of rain out of those clouds..

I am glad it made it over to your area..

I hope it doesn't wait so long next time...

Two inches, Leafwatcher! I bet you hostas are loving the moisture.

A few of the larger cracks are now closed up again in the garden.
You need a garden Fedora :)

I am a man of many hats !

I do have a large straw hat, and a REALLY big hat that is my go to hat if I will be mowing for hours at a time out on my Moms farm.

And yes the Hosta are happy with the rain, we also managed to get a small shower since the initial 2 inches of liquid growth serum .. hahhahah

The Blue Mammoth is hiding in a bank of greens, waiting.. watching, while the Deep Blue Sea is still tied up with the orange tape... I need to go clip it.. but it has been standing so tall and strong I have been afraid it might run away before it makes new friends here :)

Yes, we do love rain don't we? A string of rainy days has most people grumbling, especially my students who have to suffer though indoor recess (well, actually it is the teachers suffering :) ), but I am always doing my happy dance!

We have had nice cool weather (70s-80s during day, 50s at night), but they are predicting 100 degree temps by Wednesday. Time to haul out the hose and start preparing. UGH.

Glad for those who had rain! Although we have had some this month, none in our forecast.

Won't mention our rain here, might make you envious. But I was happy to see a day without it for a chance. Now I can walk around and maybe cut the lawn tomorrow and look civilized again. Always have been fond of a rainy day, the usual or historic weather pattern for summer here was "scattered afternoon thunderstorms," and nothing had to be hand watered. Now we never know what to expect. Feast or famine.

I have one hosta especially that kicked into overdrive with all the rain---Fragrant Dream. It might need a new pot before the season ends. But won't mess with it until after it blooms.

Another few days and we have the longest day of the year, when the sun is at its most northerly point, and the shade under my south shade plants is at a minimum. The hosta scrooched together there are larger than they were when first potted up, and I watch for any communicable diseases in any of them.

Tomorrow after I cut the grass, I figure it will be dry enough to broadcast more slug get-um stuff.

I can not complain of having had no rain. All plants are larger this year, even the roses are blooming profusely. I also like to walk in the rain, especially like to watch my slim but long dry creek awake carrying water. But as cyn writes we also have hot days coming, 94 and 95, before and after 85s. So I will water the whole yard to keep plants growing. Luckily my hostas are mostly in some shade, so they would survive even without watering right now.
