Incidently, do you know what William Cobbett said about the Medlar in his 'American Gardener' (which was first published in London in 1821)? He said: 'MEDLAR. A very poor thing indeed. The Medlar is propagated by grafting on crab-stocks, or pear-stocks. It is, at any rate, especially in this country, a thing not worthy of a place in a garden. this is Araujia sericifera, called Mothplant or Cruel Plant in New Zealand. I accidently ate it while pregnant and got very ill, I had a vicious rash all over my body and was sick. I do hope it didn't do anything to the baby. I saw it at the local grocer shop as Chayote (we call it Choko) but it was Mothplant. It grows heaps in my garden. Do not eat, it's really awful. Yes Tony, like Lisa said, those are hard to identify. You will have to wait for the fruit, and then when you cut into it. The color of the flesh, plus the size of the fruit should be a help. My cactus is blooming too for the first time this month, not fruit set yet. I keep hoping. I have the physical graffity, and yellow variety, if you are interested in cutting. Veronika

It looks like Jamun (Syzygium cumini ), also called "Indian Blackberry" or "Java plum". These trees are sometimes planted by immigrants from India. The fruit has a very "smoky" taste and is very high in tannins. Most Americans find the fruit distasteful, but many Indians have fond memories from their childhood eating the fruits off a Jamun tree in the summer. The fruit has a large seed inside, is very messy and the juice stains. Adding just a sprinkle of salt can supposedly help bring out the sweeter flavor. If the shape seems distantly reminiscent of pomegranate, it might be because the two happen to be in the same order Myrtales.
