I know, Applenut :-( When we purchased this home, and the previous owners showed me where they espaliered this lovely little Anna (they wire used to pull the branches down were embedded into the branches, I cringed), it was up against the house on the north side! I didn't have time to dig it up in January, and find a new home, because where it needs to go isn't ready, yet, to take the tree. So, it has to stay there until I get the lower part of my yard landscaped. It's starting tomorrow, in fact!! I've got a nice spot on the east fence that should get some great sunshine all day long until the very late afternoon. It will be MUCH happier and healthier over there, along with the other Anna and the Dorsett Golden. Now to get the Dorsett Golden and the Annas to bloom at the same time. My Dorsett still hasn't bloomed. the one Anna I have (which is ridiculously precocious) has a TON of lovely little skinny, non-cross pollinated apples on it! My other espaliered Anna looks like it will also have quite a few apples. Now - to keep the #@$%* rats out of my trees. I've armed myself with several bait stations. I am declaring war on the Root Rats. Last year, they ate every single one of my 20 apples off my little espaliered Anna. That I babied and tried to protect. I'm done being a nice guy. My thought: perhaps your soil is a bit different from tree to tree. Verify that water is getting down to the rootzone of that Anna. Dig, probe, and get a bit aggressive without doing too much damage to the roots. You may find it is dry down there.

I have an Anna and a Golden Dorsett and thought about getting an Einshemer. I just bought the Anna a month ago so I don't even know what it tastes like. I got my first crop off the Golden Dorsett last year but picked them at the wrong time. Either that or they are tart rather than the Sweet/Tart they are described as and I prefer sweet over tart. There are other apples that do well here so I will try to help you though it may not be the way you want. I would hope that the tree or trees you purchase produce fruit you will enjoy. With that in mind I will ask some questions about flavor and include some trees that do well here. Ask yourself what kind of apple flavor do you prefer. Very Sweet Sweet Sweet/Tart Tart/Sweet Tart Very/Tart Complex Flavors Anna is Sweet/Tart. (grows well here) Golden Dorsett is Sweet/Tart to Tart/Sweet.(grows well here) Einshemer is Tart but gets mealy and I don't recommend it. Red Fuji is Very Sweet.(grows well here) Pink Lady is Sweet/Tart.(grows well here) Honeycrisp is Sweet. (grows well here) Arkansas Black is Sweet/Tart (grows well here) Granny Smith is Very/Tart. (grows well here) I'm sure there are lots of others that grow well here too but those are the ones I have read the most about. Multi-grafted trees can be a pain in the butt getting all the varieties to fruit. Do you have limited space or is there some other reason you prefer a multi-grafted tree?

Less potential for live over pests if you thoroughly clean up all fallen foliage, fruit and strip the tree of retained foliage as well. If you want to go further, removing old mulch and replacing with fresh will also help eliminate pests like Codling Moth.
