HI GUY'S, HAVE JUST MOVED UP TO WANDIN IN VICTORIA FROM TASSIE.I DON'T KNOW THE FIRST THING ABOUT THEM. CAN THEY GROW IN THE SHADE & WHAT ARE THE BEST CONDITIONS FOR THEM.

OUR LITTLE BLOCK HAS THICK MUD (GLUE).I HAVE ALSO BOUGHT UP SOME RASBERRY CANES, HERRITAGE, LLOYD GEORGE & MY FAVOURITE WILLIAMETTE, WILL THEY GROW UP HERE.

TOMATOES WHAT SORT GROW BEST AROUND HERE. JOHN

You are in a cool area.. so although currants tolerate partial shade well you might do better to give them even more sunshine.. As for your mud.. sounds rather clayey which isn't all that bad if you work a LOT of organic matter ( try mushroom mulch) and even horse manure into it.. Currently ( no pun intended) your berries will be going into winter limbo so not a bad time to prepare the soil and plant them out. Check out google for pruning tips.
As for tommies.. well.. every region has its favourites but at a guess I'd say any of the popular staking type would do well.. try DayDream ( a Grosse Lisse variant). But of course, plant in the Spring to early summer.
We had a blistering summer period around the bushfire time and my currents ( and a lot of vegies ) got scorched.. but they are fine now.. new growth even in the autumn..

I want to go off-topic and say if you don't have blueberries and live in Oregon, they are far superior to both, and a range of early, mid and late will keep you in blueberries all summer and even up to frost. Also my preference after blueberries would be Aronia, then black currants, they have a much richer taste than red currants. They are also loaded with anti-oxidants, 3 berries have as much as 3 glasses of wine. But red currants do hold well and mine are loaded every year. Gooseberries are much poorer yielders. The Black Velvet or dark red ones taste best to me, the green Oregon Champion has typically attracted a fly that lays eggs on them and the larvae strip all the leaves off so I get no fruit. Also there has started to be a problem with the spotted wing Drosophila maggots in red and black currants. I haven't seen them in blueberries yet, I hope that doesn't happen. I am going to put up traps this next spring.

I have the seed (Hawaiian Sweet Red Current) sometimes called Sweet Pea Currant also, that you're interested in. The plant of which I've grown now for a dozen years or so, just keeps putting more and more on as long as you keep picking em. Maybe 200+ on a single plant. (No I'm not kidding). I'd be glad to send you 30+ seeds, all harvested this past November here in Northern VA. If you'd like any other tomato seed(s) I have about 15 other varieties, Ponderosa Pink, Marglobe, Hometead, Roma, Rutgers, Jubilee Golden...etc, Most are Heirloom. and fresh seed, which I could forward. My wife would like to try to grow Red Currant in our backyard (San Diego). I know it's not the best place to grow this fruit- are there any varieties that would handle the climate? I know I should try to give it shade to prevent leaf burn... Also, anyone know where I could buy one locally?

Red Currant Shrub losing leaves

Hi everyone, My red current shrub started losing leaves after it finished fruiting. It has been watered plenty from rainfall so i am assuming the problem is in the soil. My soil is very sandy so i regularly add wood chips to keep it from drying out. I did give the bush some water with Epsom salts and the last few leaves seem to be holding on. Not sure if the two are related. I would love to hear your thoughts!
