Avocado tree

Hi All I am new to this I just moved into my new qld home and there is a large avocado tree on the vacant block backing onto the canal behind our house it is huge and had heaps of avocados is there any that are poisonous or fake or can my family and I enjoy this lucky find lol....

If it is a "true" avocado" then it is edible. If you are 100% sure it is an avocado then it is safe.
The best way to assure yourself is to pick some and allow to ripen indoors for 7-10 days until they soften, then cut open. The flesh, smell and single seed should be apparent then as to real or not. If you want to, post a pic then to make doubly sure.
I should say, that probably the "vacant" lot does have a legal owner and the fruit actually belongs to him/her, but if it ends up going to waste or being eaten by fruit bats etc it does seem a pity not to take advantage. If you wanted to make doubly sure I guess the local authority would provide you with a name and address that you could contact for permission.

Firstly congratulations on getting a new home and congratulations again for finding a seemingly unowned Avocado tree. IÃ¢ÂÂm a bit more worried about you plucking from a tree you donÃ¢ÂÂt know much about especially no one else in the neighborhood seems to be doing so. ItÃ¢ÂÂs better to ask around if anyone owns the tree as you just never know. You could be charged for no reason at all for stealing off a private property. Of course, if the tree is free for all, sure. Pluck a few, take them home and cut them open when they start turning ripe. You will immediately know if itÃ¢ÂÂs edible although from my personal experience, the avocado plucked from trees like these usually arenÃ¢ÂÂt very palatable but hey, itÃ¢ÂÂs always worth a shot. Make sure before you cut you scrub the skin thoroughly as I do know fruit trees are usually sprayed with all sorts of crazy insecticides.

I see a few problems: the spotted leaves are either a persa mite or fungus no a problem but the infected leaves will fall off. you should white wash the entire tree or move it to a shaded area until it starts to recover. how long have you had it were the brown tips there when you bought it? what have you fertilized with? i give even my new trees food. for small trees like yours if watering twice a week where i am its not super hot, i use a liquid b vitamin once a week for first month and make sure the ph of your water is below 7 i treat them like my blueberries and they love it more nutrient uptake. 5.5 - 6.5 is best. there are several ways to lower ph of water. twice a month i water with a dilution of ammonia sulfate which is 21-0-0 (2 tbs to 5 gal bucket of water.) that will push new growth. and once a quarter i add a little organic slow release avocado food, azomite. and i use a flower fert 2-10-10 before bloom time for heavy flowers... i have multiple trees in pots that are 10-15 ft tall and 8 ft wide heavely fruited. so you have to be on a good feeding schedule.

Hello Aaron, I'm very new to avocados- have just had one for about six months. I primarily grow plumeria and citrus, but have just one dwarf Fuerte avocado. Have a 16' x 16' indoor greenhouse which has 8 T5HO 4 foot lights. I also have some additional LED lights for the avocado and citrus trees. I live in a wet, cold and very grey year round climate, so everything stays indoors in the greenhouse. My avocado is 4 feet tall and in a 5 gallon container. It's in a 5:1:1 soil (5 parts Repti-bark, 1 part perlite and 1 part Miracle grow potting soil). I water approximately every 5 days about 8 cups water. Fertilizer is a half dose of Osmocote, and then 1/2 dose of Foliage Pro and Pro-Tekt every other week. I bought the tree from Four Winds. It looked terrific when I bought it but within a month leaves dropped and turned brown. Now it looks beautiful again- lots of green healthy leaves popping. I'm out of town at the moment but will post a pic when I get home. Best wishes. Nancy

In the past when my grapefruit has dropped leaves, it was water DEFICIENT. This was difficult to figure out because when I would try watering it, more leaves would fall off - making me think it may have been TOO MUCH water and by watering it I made it worse! But I've learned that there is a delayed reaction with this tree. It DID need water, but by giving it the water it needs, it wanted to drop the half-dead leaves so it could grow new ones. Because immediately after the leaves fell off new leaves started growing. In fact one year it bloomed and I actually got 2 grapefruits. (And I grew this in Syracuse from a seed I planted from a store-bought fruit!)
