I do enjoy our discussion threads and as you know will be leading Call of the Midwife on February 1st.
BOOK DISCUSSIONS
I thought perhaps we could do this every two months. If someone wants to suggest a book and lead a discussion for April 1st please post here. If no one wants to, then I will pluck a book from titles I have been reading, and start another discussion in April. I know people are very busy irl and often cannot make a commitment. I have the time right now and also it is gray, miserable, cold and dark most of the time so it is prime reading time for me.

Secondly, often many of you do some very detailed book reviews in our monthly threads. Liz, Tim, Sheri, Mary etc etc. I was wondering if when any of you came across a book you particularly enjoyed you could post a separate thread on it? Just copy paste what you typed out in the monthly thread. If you are worried about it staying at the top of the page forever and ever, just do a short second post like "Down." This would help me find those books....recently I spent a lot of time searching the monthy threads for a particular book one of you had mentioned and really enjoyed. Very time consuming to have to reread all those threads. Also, then when I do read the book, I have some place to post my thoughts. Just a suggestion. :)

We used to have a thread that was specifically for book reviews. It was separate from the monthly threads in that the reviews were much more in-depth. Perhaps we could do a review thread again? And use it solely for those who wish to provide more info.

"every CF bulb has mercury in it ..." Yeah, and every incandescent bulb has lead in it! But fear not. The amount of mercury saved - mercury that a coal fired powerplant does NOT emit powering a CF, which uses less energy - is greater than the mercury in the CF. So the net release of mercury is LOWER. This is even more true with the new low mercury CFs (the amount reduced by 75-80%). An ordinary cheap generic compact fluorescent lamp has about 4-5mg of mercury. A coal fired powerplant will emit about 3.5mg of mercury powering a 20W CF for its lifetime, taking that as 7500h (a rough average). If you chuck the CF in the trash, you've just released 8.5mg of mercury into the environment. If you take it to the HHW center and they recycle the mercury, you've released only 3.5mg. Now let's say you use a 75W incandescent bulb instead. Since it lasts an average of 750h you'll need 10 of them to the one CF. This uses more landfill space, and puts lead in the landfill, but we'll neglect that for now. The salient point here is that although those 10 bulbs contain no mercury, the powerplant emits 13mg of mercury powering them. And there's not a thing you can do about it. You can't haul any of that mercury to your local HHW center. Bottom line: using an incandescent bulb releases at least 53% more mercury into the environment than using a CF, and that's if you junk the CF in a landfill. If you use a CF and dispose of it properly at a HHW disposal center, the mercury released is only 3.5mg. In that case, using the incandescent bulbs instead of CFs releases 270% more mercury, or 3.7 times as much! So don't be afraid of fluorescents on account of the small amount of mercury they contain. Hmm...great question! There are some here I would have to say 'ditto' to, but that's redundant so I'll say this for myself: I can't abide graphic sex or violence. I love to read children's books...they actually inspire me in many ways. I have certain times and places to read different genres: mysteries at night in bed or on rainy days while (locked) in my car at the lake, historical fiction and uncomplicated and light-hearted reading in the hammock rain or shine, devotions in my club chair next to the front window, magazines on the front porch with a note pad and pen to jot down ideas I get from them, paperbacks of short stories in the car parking lot while waiting for husband to run his errands and yes, I do read in the bathroom! I look up books on amazon.com, ebay and then try to find them at the library if I think I don't want to own the book...I do buy lots of books both new and used; however. I don't like to lend my books out to anyone...I've lost some irreplaceables that way. I write in all my books...favorite sentences, paragraphs, dialogue, etc. I use my stack of books as a coffee cup 'coaster' and have some rings on the covers, but I never turn down the corners, although I do turn fold the pages in on themselves for quick reference and I LOVE to make and use bookmarks...they are 'art' to me. I never read without a cup of coffee or iced drink nearby...an afgan just in case it's chilly and I always kick off my shoes before opening a book to read. I have many fictional 'friends and advisers'...oh gosh, I could go on and on about this, but I have got to get to the end of this book I'm reading right now...so, later! nola_anne

veer, I just learned recently myself that what we call arugula is the same thing as rocket. Shaw was very clever when he said that we are two nations divided by a common tongue. The book maintains, and I agree, that there is a great divide in America. A great many people live primarily on fast food and convenience food, and eat both unhealthfully and without much sophistication. Lots of people never cook other than to heat something in a microwave oven. On the other hand there is a large and growing segment of the population with a great interest in good food -- the "foodies" -- who dine out or cook at home. Look at the success of the Food Network on television these days. This interest seems to be centered most heavily around the Northeast and the West Coast, although I'm sure many such people are found all throughout the country. The book was a lot of fun to read. My poor husband was trying to read his own book on the plane and I kept nudging him to read bits to him. (It's only fair -- he asks me crossword puzzle questions.) You should be able to find it if you are interested. I bought in a bookstore in Florence, and I see that Amazon UK has it. And yes, we did come home inspired. I have made several things we learned, and my son was gratifyingly impressed. Tonight Tom will be cooking my almost-birthday dinner and I'm eager to see what he comes up with. Someone said to me, Oh how nice that you took your husband to cooking school with you. I replied, How nice that he took me. It was his idea in the first place! He generally comes up with good ideas.

Thanks, Pam for responding. I've missed you but was very glad to hear of your news. :)
I think we will just motor along as we have been. If people want to write separate posts, they will. Hope you get to join us in the Midwife discussion!

Janalyn I have not seen anywhere the option of EDIT?
I do not pay to use the forums, would that be the reason? Do those of you using Edit pay for the priviledge?

I think everyone has that ability Pat. I do not pay either. I don't think anyone does. Look at your post above. On the upper right of that post you should see "clippings" which allows you to "clip the post, email it, what is this? and seem most clipped and recent clippings"

Right under that it says "NEW! Edit post"

If you want to edit a particular post, you click on that and it will bring up your original post and you can modify it any want you want, and it will indicate when you edited it by some italics on the original post..

This doesn't happen for me.
If I click onto 'clip this post . . .' nothing happens
If I click onto 'see most clipped . . .' a long list of previous posts comes up'
Nowhere is a message saying "NEW! Edit post".
"It's not fair" as the kids used to say. :-(

It is only possible to edit your own posts so if you are reading a post made by someone else you won't see "edit post". That may be where the confusion lies.

AH-I see it now!

As I see it you are only able to Edit after you have posted your message?
The NEW Edit option only shows to me after I have submitted my post.

That is true because before you submit your post you can edit it when you Preview Message by going to the box in which your message is still displayed, down below the previewed message. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks Francis, that makes perfect sense. I notice it also says I can post photos . . . which may be a move too far for me . . .!

Thanks for the kind words Janalyn. It is nice to be with my friends at RP. I will be posting shortly on the monthly thread as I have been in one of those reading frenzies that consume all of my time.
