Poor peas

my peas aren't going well. the soil is well nourished. the soil has blood and bone, chook poo. we love peas and would appreciate any help and or advice. thanks.

Look at Autumn in the forum we are all having the same probs
Im in a very frost area and all is at a stop at present,not that I have any peas. They will not survive this time of year.

In my case it's lack of water. Normally at this time of the year we have had 160mm (on average) of rain. We had 6mm (or so) of rain for the whole month of May. My veggie garden looks pretty miserable as a result.

The peas look okay, but not stunning. I hope the rains will hit soon and everything will start to grow.

I hope that in your case things will pick up, too, as soon as 'proper' autumn/winter hits. :)

I've had the same problem and never could understand why. My grandmother planted peas by direct seeding on Good Friday year after year. She routinely grew a crop of peas in a pretty chilly area of zone 5. I have used a method I saw one time on the Victory Garden TV show which worked for me. I planted peas indoors in peat pot strips and planted the entire strips shortly after the peas started to grow. I don't know why that should be necessary. Certainly, farmers do nothing like that. But it worked. BTW, I do not ordinarily advocate the use of peat pots. I got terrible results when I used them for other crops. In recent years, I have been pursuing & trialing the "afila" (semi-leafless) varieties, such as "Novella" & "Mesa". They are short, self-supporting if planted closely (well adapted to wide rows), and tend to ripen uniformly... but so far, the yield has been disappointing, and the harvest window short. "Mesa" demonstrates considerable instability, and I am hoping to improve it. There is even an afila snap pea, "Sugar Lace". The pods are quite large for a sugar snap, and borne on short 12" vines. The original had very poor germination for me, even after multiple attempts; "Sugar Lace II" (which is still a PVP variety) has fared much better. But my all-time favorite green pea is "Green Arrow", for its large pods, compact vines, and high yield.

So glad you solved your mystery! On another note: for many seasons I've had a bird feeder station with tons of house finches/goldfinches/house sparrows/etc. just a few feet away from my veggie beds planted with peas, without any noticeable losses. It sounds as though the birds in your area are hungry for protein, as nesting season's underway. Now they've learned to eat a handy alternative when insect populations are low: your poor peas! It sounds counter-intuitive, but offering them a feeder filled with oily black sunflower seeds might keep losses to a minimum. In my experience, they'd much rather have enticing, easy-to-get fatty seeds than the so-so peas. Other people's mileage may vary, of course. Since pea-prospecting is a learned behavior, bird netting is currently your best bet until the next few generations "forget" this food source. Best wishes for your garden, L

Wattle is right, peas are very sensitive to frost. Additionally you need to be a bit careful with manures and peas (especially chook as it is high in nitrogen). It can lead to excessive leaf development at the expense of flowers and pods. The manure needs to be well rotted. With legumes its better to let them fix their own nitrogen, which will also be better for the following crops.

My peas were doing extremely well until the birds defoliated them...I'll have another go planting in spring

Me again I have just read in my diary for 2004 that I planted peas on 30.6.04 and had a great crop.
These also included snow peas. The bush variety were Gem Massey seeds soaked overnight, and a little blood and bone dug in as I went.
