What is happening to my carrot seedlings???
Comments (7)It's DEW WORMS. I had the same problem for several years. I'm on my third planting this year. Finally figured it out. My carrot bed is 4' X 25'. Picked 70 big worms one night. I knew I had missed lots, so next day I decided to use technology. I made two probes out of coat hangers, wired one to the black wire of an old extension cord and the other to the white wire. I stuck them in the ground about two feet apart... And the worms came dancing out. Almost 1,000. No BS . After five days I still have carrot seedlings. Use at your own risk. Leave plugged in for a few minutes, then unplug and pick worms. After a while I got brave and started picking with the power on. Just be sure to unplug before you grab a probe to move it. Works better if the ground is very wet....See Morebirds eating pea vines?
Comments (7):) You should feel complimented- obviously these are birds with refined taste! Birds need to eat a little greenery just as we do- at least that's what I read in captive bird-keeping articles. So maybe they are satisfying their need with your peas? Your local birds might have discovered your pea vines by accident, but decided that they liked them! Birds' diets can change dramatically when they are feeding young. The nesting season should be winding down by the end of summer, so maybe your fall crop will be OK? All of this is assuming that you've ruled out them feeding on aphids on the peas, of course! :) As Zeedman said, they will likely remember where they got this food next year and come back to check. Maybe some pie plates hanging so they flash and bang in the breeze? Or maybe some 30% shade cloth (recommended in the fruit forum as being superior to bird netting in every way)draped over the vines once the birds show up again? Or Veggiefaery's very satisfying sounding super-soaker... Good luck! Sunni...See Moredo rabbits eat peas?
Comments (5)Yes, rabbits eat peas...but i've had rabbits breeding in the garden that didn't bother them...instead, the slugs ate 'em. I know because I was out there with a flashlight and a bottle of ammonia water curdling the little slimeballs. The little fuzzbunnies were such good hiders, i'd be picking beans or weeding and almost touch one before i saw those big brown eyes. Where I live now, they've eaten pea sprouts (and green bean sprouts) at times, sometimes they left them for the deer. This year, I have three dogs, which should put a stop to resident rabbits and derelict deer...so i suppose the slugs are queing up already, just waiting for sprouts...sigh....See MoreWhat's eating my black eyed peas?
Comments (5)"The plants look perfect except for the peas being eaten from the pod, with some shriveling." Do you mean that the pods have been opened, and the seeds removed? Was the pod chewed open? Voles are a frequent culprit here, they will harvest the seeds of legumes as they begin to ripen. For the most part, they prefer to harvest seeds close to the ground, often pulling plants down; but they can climb as well. Last year they climbed the trellis to harvest seeds from my yardlongs... they must have been hanging from the pods as they did so. I put a few rat traps out, which put an end to their pilfering....See Morecshemeta_comcast_net
