Just Me: Most people would not consider red raspberries as a landscape plant, but as a producer of delicious berries. Raspberries grow in an undisciplined, spreading fashion, and cannot be convinced to grow in circles even if you beg them. Raspberries that do not take up some room do not produce many berries. If you want small numbers of plants, you will have to dig them out when they begin to spread, since that is their growth habit. You may have enough raspberries for cereal garnish, but not enough for making jam, which is the best there is. If you want to plant a round patch of raspberries, you may try to contain them with deep barriers of plastic or steel around the patch. But you still may have some escapees, and you will have to dig them out with a fork. And you will have to remove the spent fruited canes every season to allow new primocanes to grow in. How long they take to bear fruit depends on what type they are. Fall bearing raspberries (like Caroline & Anne) bear fruit on this year's canes so I will have some fruit this fall. I can't remember if they will bear a light crop next summer on the same canes as well - I'll have to look up when to prune them. Those canes will die and need to be pruned out. The patch will continue to grow as the plants send out suckers and fill in the area. Summer bearing plants (like my Canby and Triple Crowns) bear fruit on one year old canes. I got a couple of berries from my Canby this year and have a few trying to ripen on the Triple Crown as well - they are growing on the part of the plant that was above ground when I planted them this spring. Next year's berries will grow on the canes that grew this summer. If you have summer bearing plants, you'll likely need to bend down the canes (though Triple Crown may be too thick) and mulch them or if they don't bend, try to shelter them somewhat from the dry winter winds to protect next summer's crop. If those canes die, no fruit for you next summer! Also, Caroline and Anne aren't thornless although my Anne bushes don't seem to have very many thorns. I would like to try some black raspberries too but I think it's advised to plant them quite a ways from the reds. I can't remember exactly why, but it may be a disease issue. I'm waiting on getting those for a little while.

It was growing on the slopes of El Yunque in the rain forest. It was quite "viney" in shape, few berries, they tasted good. They are considered a pest there outside of the forest. They are the variety rubus probus One person here in Florida is growing rubus moluccanus triloba to some effect. States the drupes are quite large and not as "cohesive" as usually seen. She will be sending me a photo. Extensive research has conbvinced me to try the mulberry pakistani instead and use a pruning method to hold it to 8 feet. Almost to a person the fruit is described as luscious with a raspberry flavor, very large fruit and good for all uses. It comes from Islamabad Pakistan so you can check the climate compared to yours. We just had 2 nites at and just below freezing, our spring is mild, summers are hot and humid. If you can contact puerto ricans they can perhaps send seeds. We were there early August and they were fruiting at that time. Good luck :)
