I'm still a novice myself but my bulb foliage isn't poking through the ground at an even rate. Daffs, Tulips, Hyacinth, Iris Reticulata, Crocus, Pushkinia, Squill...some of each are up and some of each not...right in the same beds or containers. I'm not privy to the inner workings of each bulb and they seem to have their own individual internal clocks. No doubt much more experienced bulb people can say with more certainty or "informed maybe" what's going on. The linked Bulb Guide says you might need to prechill some bulbs in Zone 7 but don't know if it's necessity since I don't garden there. If you scroll down on the linked page you'll see the optimal planting times for Spring blooming bulbs. Don't know what kind of Tulips you have but different varieties bloom at different times...early, mid and late Spring. I should've had my bulbs in the ground by November but had some still in bags at end of December so planted them. Some are coming up and others aren't. Better to plant than toss as long as you can work soil (or use containers which I do with some bulbs) as they might give you bloom next year if some don't bloom this year. You just have to make sure they have good drainage so they don't rot until next next year. Last year in late Spring I took a lot of bulbs out of beds to rearrange some things and containers since I needed them to plant annuals. I carefully tipped bulbs out of containers onto newspaper and took them out of soil with as much top growth and roots as I could manage. The Tulip bulbs were mostly rotted so had to toss them...didn't know about keeping soil very well draining then. Daff bulbs were mostly fine. I got an old laundry basket with side holes from my recycling center, lined it with newspaper and "planted" the bulbs in the basket using the container potting mixed lightened with some perlite. Kept watering until foliage died back and then just moved entire basket up against house for rest of year until December. When I tipped the laundry basket over the Daff bulbs had LONG roots. I scurried around to find a place to replant them and just hoped for the best. Turns out there were a few Tulip & Hyacinth bulbs in there too but most have started to throw up foliage. I was lucky enough to have much of those long roots intact. Just luck and desperation...no horticultural sure footedness here. :) Still, it's going to be "wait and see" unless someone with Zone 7 experience can tell you definitively if any of your bulbs needed prechilling...if you didn't buy prechilled bulbs to start with. i will make it as simple as i can.. its for you to take the bullet points and go from there ... heres how you do it... use google.. find out how long from planting to bloom ... lets say 90 days ... then work back from there.. you want them in july ... they should be planted 90 days back ... or may ... you want them in august ... plant in .. etc ... [did i count right.. lol ] the problem is.. that every single one will bloom in one week.. which is nice .. but if you want a bigger/longer show... you plant some every week in may ... so you get a month of show ... if you want them in late august.. plant them in june .. got that part?? ... if not i can try again ... let me know ... now... as with ALL SEEDS .. or in this case corms.. soil temps are imperative.. frankly.. you MIGHT be too early ... soil temps might be warm during the day.. but if it is often falling into the 40's at night .. you dont have the constant soil temps to start the growth.. the seeds wont die ... but they arent going to sprout until some magic temp number is hit.. which in my z5.. wont be for 2 or 3 more weeks ... like when it stays in the 60''s all night long ... most likely all chances of FREEZE.. as compared to frost.. are gone.. so we need not worry about freezing the corms ... then in our zones.. you really dont want them getting too big.. until all frost possibilities are gone... and for me that is late may ... you.. maybe a week sooner .. so are you late... ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR YOUR ZONE .. and you may be too early by a long shot ... shall i try again.. i am willing.. ken ps: i have lived 100 miles south of flint my entire life.. no glad is hardy .... UNLESS they are planted along the house.. where there might be a micro climate .. otherwise.. i would like to get some of those corms for my garden .... and maybe get them to market .... pps: you could take an old tray.. put some damp media in it.. and loosely cover the corm .... and start forcing growth .... in the garage .... and when the growth points get an inch or two big.. go plant them out in the soil .... and maybe get them to bloom a few weeks earlier ... try it with 3 or 4 ... experimenting is the BEST way to learn ... just dont forget about them.. and find them in august.. lol ...

It's definitely not too late!!! If you can make a hole to plant the bulb, i.e. the ground hasn't frozen solid yet, you can plant the bulbs. I'd say you probably have until at least Nov 20-30 to do it. I'm a professional landscaper and we haven't even begun to plant bulbs yet, still planting trees and shrubs. I like to go to the big stores at the end of the season to buy some of their left overs at 75% discount and I take some to Thanksgiving dinner for the kids to plant. It's become part of the holiday tradition, gives them something to look forward to 'after winter'

Hello again, How did you ever give up subtropical temps to move to NE? I think you may need to lighten your clay soil a bit, but since you already have stuff in the ground, you will know soon enough. Sometimes the bulbs around here don't come up because the squirrels and other creatures eat them during the winter months. Some gardeners go to great lengths to prevent this from happening. My mom swears her neighborhood squirrels were on the look out when I was planting and they'll be digging them when no one is looking! Different type bulbs require differing depths. I would follow directions for whatever you are planting regardless of the the temp of the soil. You are not alone liking goldenrod. Around my way, most of us yank them as weeds but others actually plant it, so its all in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Pesky weeds seem to be so hardy! Mulch may help limit the weeds, but if your soil is so much clay, you probably don't want to mulch. I would suggest soil analysis or start another post regarding clay soil.
