roselee, Yes - Had gotten the idea for lamium from a UK book on gardening in alkaline soil and found Sperry's article as some confirmation it could work in north Texas. Though the TAMU overview sheet is not nearly as positive about its suitability for anywhere in Texas - especially south of 8a: In Central Texas and the Gulf Coast areas, L. maculatum tends to succumb to our summer heat and humidity; ironically this species is weedy in more moderate environments; dry shade often results in open patches, ruining their effectiveness as a groundcover; this species is intolerant of foot traffic.... Even goes on to add a bit of snarky discouragement for consideration as a Texas ground cover: Lamium maculatum is a good example of why we need to beware of recommendations from authorities in other regions concerning the use of plants in Texas landscapes; for instance among noted plantsmen, Donald Wyman (1956) claims this is a plant for “rigorous climates” and Dr. Allan Armitage (1989) refers to the cultivar ‘White Nancy’ as “one of the best ground covers I have tested”, apparently Texas landscapes are a tad beyond rigorous; the author points this out not as a criticism to these two esteemed plantsmen, but rather as an illustration of the need to consider the authority’s frame of reference when contemplating their recommendations on landscape usage for a given taxon.... Negative enough to ask here if anyone has actually tried it. Can't find any plants that are shipping now, but will likely try one or two when available again. Thanks!

I thought I'd give an update on my battle with the Archangel. It's been almost a year since I first wrote this post. After repeated spraying with Round-up last year, the archangel finally died. I have been vigilante these last 11 months about keeping an eye out for new growth, but have seen no sign of it...until last week. I spotted a small but healthy patch growing in the same area. Once again, I sprayed (drenched it really) it with Round-up. It's been seven days and I just came in from checking on the plants. If anything, they look healthier and heartier than ever. Off to mix up another batch of RU and to pull what I can. These plants are hard to reach as they are growing right at the edge of the ravine underneath blackberry canes. I feel like I'm fighting what is eventually going to be a losing battle, but I will keep it up in the hopes of turning the tide.
