A much bigger bird.

There were five Owl's in my garden yesterday, but they are so hard to see, they blend in very well with the branches, the only way I knew they were there was because the noisy miners were going berserk again but the Owls did not take any notice of them. I wanted them to open their eyes but they seemed fast asleep, now I wonder what the neighbours would have thought if they had seen me running around yelling out Who Who but it worked and one opened its eyes so I managed to get one Pic. I suspect it is too late thisd year, but Cummins nursery in NY,, was offering many of the hard to find cold hardy varieties of apricot. I am hoping they will continue to offer them for a few more years...this was the first for many of them. The author of that article at OAkcreek is bob purvis, who heads the Nafex sub group on apricots and he sent cummins the scion wood last year in an effort to get some of these varieities more available to people.

Most road noise is actually from the air trying to get out from between the tires and the road as the wheels turn so a busy road will always be noisy despite the technology used so long as rubber tires are involved. Besides, buses are just as likely to switch to biodiesel as they are to compressed natural gas or hybrids. My concerns with a busy road would be where guests would park. If the front yard is large enough to accommodate a circular driveway with parking spaces than that may not be an issue but you do need to ask yourself if your visitors will have to park a street over and walk to your home. A busy road may be an advantage if you want to hang out a shingle and work out of your home so it's difficult to say one way or the other. However, if it was me, I would go with the quieter street and smaller home, location is everything and if your kids are already old enough that busy streets aren't a safety issue then it won't be very many years till they will be moving out. Basements can be renovated very inexpensively with little more than a circular saw, a staple gun , hammer and nails.

Just saw a flock of birds, a little bigger than a dove. Any ideas?

Darker gray than a dove too and flew more like a hawk. I searched for types of hawks and they are all too big. Could be some kind of kite too.

range hoods - go much bigger or smaller?

How wide is your cooktop/range? How deep are the hoods? If both hoods are at least 24" deep, then If your cooktop/range is 30" wide, then the 36" hood will be fine. If your cooktop/range is wider than 30", then I would go with the 48" hood It's always best (regardless of your cooking fuel or cooking style) to go with a hood at least 6" wider than your cooking surface and 24" deep.

Great photo. When we were visiting the in-laws the other night, we were sitting out the back deck just on nightfall when first 3, then 4, then 5, came down and sat on the back fence and started diving to the ground getting insects. Great to watch but it got too dark, too soon.

I have looked after a tawny frogmouth, which that beautiful bird is, who was orphaned. He was fascinating but we didn't have him long as we had a nasty heatwave and we lost him but the experience was great. Cheers, Jules
