Magpie baby

Hi everyone, thought I would put in a photo of Pippin the baby magpie I am raising as he was orphaned. He is learning to sing at the moment so he sounds a bit funny but adorable. He is such a character I am going to miss him when he is rereleased back into the bush, I hope he comes back for visits.

Sorry it isn't a gardening post but I couldn't resist and I haven't got any pics of my garden yet.

awww, isnt that cute? we have maggies that live in our street and every now and then there's a screaming baby amongst them, never seen one that close up before though, great pic and thanks for posting it

shawnamaverick You should probably get some duck feed as ducks require different nutrition than other birds. Provide some small gravel for digestion. With our farmed ducks we have the heat lamp at about 90 degrees F the first week and decrease it by 5 degrees per week. It may be illegal where you are to keep a wild duck so you should check into that. Duck will need fresh water every and food that meets it's nutritional need. Depends on the type of duck, but if it's a water fowl it will likely roost on the ground so just a safe place for night. You may find that the duck will not accept the chukar. Ducks imprint very strong on what they see when they hatch. In this case it believes it is a duck. If it was hatched out by humans it would believe it was a human. Ducks can be very aggressive so be prepared for that. You may find you have a loudly quacking baby on your hands for a while, they are flock animals.

I think so, Rich - my "Seeds I Have" file has become a ridiculous 64 pages (single spaced) long. And I just placed another order during Gardens North 50% off April seed sale (almost missed it - got in the next to last day, I think). Guess I better get busy! Even at the apartment, I managed to start 133 containers. Not all of them have germinated - there's always a percentage for me that don't - but the ones that have will be headed to the new house, along with the dozen or so potted plants I brought with me from MA. I have a really nice beach plum I grew from WSing; have to research where to plant it here so it will survive - it took me nearly 5 years to get one of the seeds to germinate; I don't want to lose it now! One of the great things about this place is that I finally have the space to do different things - my classic herb garden (I'm looking into doing an actual designed one, like maybe a knot garden), tropical-esque near the pool, vegetables, and plenty of room to extend ornamental beds. Gee, I hate to be the" follow-up" to Betty's post. I can't possibly top her excitement! Still, I must say, your set is very special. Isn't it great to find that someone loves what you've been storing for some many years. You came to the right place. Everyone here is just so wonderful and encouraging and funny and helpful. I've been a "member" for a little less than a year and I love it. Judy, can you make the close-up of the single table setting any larger? (I've got old eyes.) I think everyone is right concerning the tablecloth and napkins. They'd add a punch of color to the table. I'd use two colors, a blue that goes with your dishes and some other complimentary color (I think that's why the floral plate looks so nice with the dishes - it's got colors that blend so nicely with the glass plates.) And I'd try to add a little height to the center, like Luvs mentioned. Do you have a small serving piece in the same or similar glass pattern? You could place some flowers in it. Anyway, keep playing with it and keep posting your results. It's fun for everyone to see how a table setting evolves. We all admit to setting a table and then making little changes for the next couple of days, moving things around, substituting one thing for another, etc., until we get just the feel we're looking for. The fun is in the creating.

I am sure it will come back for visits, my mum feed a family of magpies and they stayed around for 2 years.

Isn't he cute! I just love our Magpies around here. It's lovely to wake up each morning to their melodious song. I also am grateful for the pest destroying mission they go on everyday. Good on you for giving this little guy a second chance.

My favoutite bird!!!. Cute, full of character, beautiful song, Good shots:) "SWOOP". Always best to feed our feathered residents to avoid being used for target practice when they are nesting. Wattle birds are funny as well. Especially when they chase the cats around. Then there's the baby honey eaters that look like a ball of fluff:)

LOL - I would like to see you TRY and release him into the bush! I think you will find he becomes a family member. Friends once had one that flew round the house, danced to piano music and could be hypnotised into laying on it's back, legs in the air, for several minutes as if asleep.
It also had a limited vocabulary.
Good luck with the release but I he WILL think he is human.

Hi Jules...Yes I agree, you have probably got that dear little birdy for life.
It is so cute they are a joy those magpies we dont have many here any more
They go over the road now, too many other birds here, hubby used to feed them all the time.
They used to come over at 3pm every afternoon as they knew hubby used to dig up lawn grubs for them.
Very clever birds. I miss them, Good luck with your little one you are doing a fantastic job.
