Favorite Australian summer 'treat' fruit etc. ?

Is it still hot there in Australia? I was just wondering out of curiosity what are some favorite home grown or local grown summer treats? Fruits etc. You know in New Jersey (USA) we love our (local grown! :) ) tomatos and sweet corn.... and of course we love the "out of state" watermelons and peaches....

For me, it's nectarines. And mangoes. Both of which come from my state, too (although the Qld mangoes are very nice too).

I actually make my living managing home and estate orchards so maybe my opinion will carry some weight here. No, I don't completely agree with your approach. Using herbicides to speed establishment and increase productivity is acceptable to me, although it is not something I do in managing home and estate orchards as a general rule. Mulching accomplishes the same thing and more- although the extra work is a negative from an efficiency stand point. Your expressed reason of eliminating pests by eliminating all other plants in the vicinity of your trees is what I disagree with, because all major pests will have no trouble finding your trees from longer distances. I don't understand the fall application of herbicide- I should think mid-summer would be the time to end such applications or maybe late summer for latest ripening fruit. Mid winter oil would be a waste of time for me as the only reason I have to apply it is to help control mites, scale and pear psyla and they are much more vulnerable when trees first start growing in early spring. Immunox is only useful in spring. It is not affective for summer fungus on apples or brown rot on stone fruit- use Monterey Fungus Fighter for brown rot and maybe Captan for fly speck and sooty blotch if those are your summer apple fungus pests. I don't know what the Bayer product is but I'd stick with Triazide if I was you. Your program seems arbitrary and not based on a complete understanding of the pests you are trying to control or the efficacy of the material you are using to control them. You need to monitor your pests and figure out what they are specific to your site. Perhaps you can get some help from your cooperative extension or a nearby experienced grower on this. I can't speak for your pests and I know you need much later insect control where you are than where I am in southeastern NY, but I doubt you need to spray until a couple of weeks before harvest. I usually don't need any insect control during summer as worst pests have finished their cycle by then.

Here I am! I've been catching up on my repotting. I'm going to have to invest in a machine to mix up my soil. The ol "fill up the wheel barrow and mix with a hoe" is killing me! I'm buying spag peat several bales at a time now. Here's my list...if I can remember them all: Growing: Garcinia Livingstonei(Imbe(5)), Mangosteens(9), Garcinia Madrono(2), Garcinia Brasiliensis(AchachairÃº), cacao, pineapple(2), Feijoa(pineapple guava(12)), dragon fruit(red and white fleshed), papaya(dwarf and full(2 each), sugar apples(2), grumichama(cherry of rio grande), Jit Lee Rambutan, rambutan root stock(rongrien graft died), staghorn fern, maprang(mayong chid), miracle fruit(always blooming, always dropping), carambola, bananas(nam wa, super drarf cavendish), plumeria, passiflora, longan(kohala), tamarind, lychee(sweetheart), mango(nam doc mai-fruiting and loaded right now), sapodilla(alano-blooming for first time), orange, lemon, lime, key lime. Native grown: apples, pear, cherry(5 grafted varieties on one tree!), paw paws, peach(currently hit with a nasty fungal disease. Will probably yank it.) That's it! Can ya tell I'm partial to the Garcinias/Rheedia's?? Obviously in the future, this list will need trimmed down quite a bit keeping only the highly desirable. I wanted a jaboticaba and jak fruit but it just doesn't make sense right now. Besides, my wife won't let me..... :(

Perhaps the reason he makes them like that is because they live so close to Canada: on Lake St.Clair between Detroit & Port Huron . . . which, of course, is just over the borders from Windsor and Sarnia, Ontario, respectively. He may have originally had one at a restaurant over there. Do you add dill pickle juice and a pickle spear to yours, too, or is that just my BIL's idea? We love it. As for Clamato Juice, we buy it in Michigan but they also sell it at many grocery stores here in New Mexico. Love it! Lynn

Lime chicken soft tacos Originally from allrecipes site but I made changes. I always have sour cream available for those who want it. INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast meat - cubed-- I have made this using left over rotisserie chicken 1/8 cup red wine vinegar 1 lime, juiced 1 teaspoon white sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 5 green onions, chopped *1/3 finely sliced onions - I use purple for color * finely sliced bell pepper of your choice 4 cloves garlic, minced *less if don't love garlic 1 teaspoon dried or fresh cilantro or parsley 10 (6 inch) flour tortillas 1 tomato, diced 1/4 cup shredded lettuce - - I used more 1/4 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese or as needed 1/4 cup salsa or as needed DIRECTIONS: 1. Saute chicken in a medium saucepan over medium high heat for about 20 minutes(if using pre cooked chicken just heat to warm it.). Add vinegar, lime juice, sugar, salt, pepper, green onion, garlic and cilantro . Simmer for an extra 10 minutes.(if you want the onion and bell pepper cooked add them also) (I like to keep a little of the diced green onions uncooked for toppings) 2. Heat an iron skillet over medium heat. Place a tortilla in the pan, warm, and turn over to heat the other side. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Serve lime chicken mixture in warm tortillas topped with tomato, lettuce, cheese and salsa. If you chose to not cook the onions and bell pepper use them as toppers along with the green onions you saved *items are optional This is fast and easy for a light summer dish. Of course some tortilla chips and guacamole would be a great addition.

I am in Queensland and its Mango, pineapples, watermelon and lady finger banana are my favourite.
I simply adore Red Capsciums, and lebanese cucumbers as even store bought ones are really tasty.
It is still warm here in Brisbane the capital of Queensland which is in the SE of the State.
And the lowest temp in the night is between 18-22 degrees C and the days are 28-32

Big fat juicy black cherries, big burst in your mouth blueberries and super size Tasmanian raspberries with a dusting of icing sugar and vanilla ice cream.....summer pudding..

I live in the Chittering Valley in Western Australia which is a wonderful citrus growing area, so I would have to say mandarins and oranges. In my own garden right now, I have ripe watermelons, peaches and passionfruit.

I reckon the best strawberries in the world are grown just outside Melbourne in Seville and Wandin....well at least one of the best!
I adore the nectarines grown in Victoria and seedless white grapes are a favourite as well.
I also love cherries, but unfortunately the season in so short and the prices are so high!

well IMHO you can't beat a home grown apricot,dried, fresh, preserved, frozen,in pies on ice cream...so many ways ,so delicious.... though I do love my grapes,my nectarines and blood plums too...then theres the apples and the peaches, the almonds too yes it is a cornucopia isn't it.Earths' Bounty.....a pity we don't look after her as we should isn't it?

It's all the stone fruits and berries. many's the day I've been dragged kicking and screaming from a devastated pile of stone fruit. I can eat 'em 'til I'm sick.
A mango/blueberry/raspberry/passionfruit combo.
