Tiny, weeny, baby rose :)

I have my first ever baby rose grown from seed! It has just pushed its tiny head out of the soil and has its first secondary leaf! It is SO cute, and is only about 6mm long! (if that)

Others are coming up too, but this litte one is just not looking back. I am SO excited!

I have never done this before, and I don't know why I haven't! The feeling is amazing ... seeing this tiny little baby that is possibly one of a kind, growing in the soil that I planted it in :)

I hope this post brings back some wistful memories for others who have grown roses from seed, and that it has managed to capture a little of the giant grin that I have plastered on my face right now?

Well Done !!!!
I tried that earlier this year with Bonica but nothing happened.
Guess I will stick to cuttings in future, it was probaby my fault most likely left them in the heat too long.

Anyway Congratulations, and we will be looking forward to hearing how they grow.

Thats fantastic Meribast.We've been playing around with this too just this year.Our seeds started to germinate in Winter and were just starting to sprout more and more every day.Then the unwelcome 38oC heatwave came along in September and everything just came to a holt.I was just starting to wonder if that was going to be it for this year (apparently they germinate best in cool months) when three more germinated just yesterday.
I can relate to what you said about some growing faster than others.Just when you think the process is grinding along real slow, a seed will germinate and power ahead of others which have been growing slowly for weeks and weeks.
I think this is "probably" (I'm definately no expert here) because we are planting lots of seed from miniature roses which often have flori/HT as one parent and another mini as the other parent.So far only a handfull have flowered but all are similar in colour to their parents.Having said that these were open pollinated.I haven't got any of my crosses to come up yet but then only managed to collect about 20 viable seed (cross pol.) so this is no suprise.
I was wondering how you intend to treat your new creations ie.ruthless culling, or just let them all grow on, or something else?
Anyhow congratulations and keep up the good work.
P.S Misty I know for sure that Bonica will produce viable seed because some of our Australian breeders are using it and they've obtained some good results too.

OMG. DO you know the variety name. your seeds are probably going to fail. to make eggplant seeds you MUST allow the eggplant to remain on the plant for a very long time after ready to eat. well maybe you can leave it indoors on a counter. It is most important that the seeds remain in the eggplant as long as possible. when eggplant is made for seeds they leave the eggplant on the plant until it goes at least brown and changes to where it can no longer be eatten. Those eggplant look super good and I would love to grow them. Hope you know the variety name. hope I can find them. hope you get some good seeds for next year. best would have been probably to leave one plant with some eggs on them until as late as possible to harvest. hopefully leaving in the kitchen for a month or more will help. here is a short quote off the seed savers exchange website. Seed Saving: Isolate 1/4 mile from other eggplants to prevent crossing. Let the fruits grow far past maturity, so that the seeds can be removed from the soft flesh. Most seeds are brown and are usually located at the bottom of the fruit. below is the story with pictures of someone who failed because he did not let them go long enough. interesting read and pictures on saving eggplant seeds. they germinated when new but not in the spring. they died because they were not ripe enough. those are great eggplant seed do you remember where they came from. Tiny baby roses often produce flowers that don't look much like the mature plant's flowers. So if the flowers look a little strange, don't be too concerned. The growers who probably most need to remove buds from tiny plants are those with a short growing season and harsh winters. The baby plants need all the help they can get surviving that. In contrast, Zone 9 has a long growing season and mild winters. One thing, if the roses don't really take off (slow to get growing), removing buds until they do take off can help.

Most important thing is not to let any of them dry out this year. They need time to grow roots most of all. Don't over do it with anything. You don't give a newborn baby a big steak dinner. You give them what their little baby systems can handle. If you give them too much stuff you will kill them with kindness. What I would do is wait until maybe end of April and then for the rooted cuttings 1/4 strength fish emulsion every couple of weeks until it gets too hot, then right after Labor Day when it starts cooling down at night but before it gets cold, maybe one or two tablespoons at most of that ARS mix, (omit Epsom Salts). For the new grafted ones, let them bloom, then give them that ARS recipe at 1/2 recommended dosage, but just once for this year.

Hi Jeri. The large bush is not Dr. Huey. The flowers have 40+ petals, are the size of my fist, and highly fragrant. The rootstock may very well be Dr. Huey. Would it be possible for a rootstock to throw a seed? I don't think the little guy is growing from a root that got left behind, because I got the whole thing in a very small clump of dirt. Now you've got me really curious.??

Maybe I will get more of a variety of hips seeing I have more roses this year.

I still haven't got any blooms on my babies but I have heaps of them.
