Hi Michelle I have mised you on the forums this week.
I love your roses they are so pretty Pat Austin is a lovely shape.
Lovely lady is looking good there in the middle, mine is on its second flush now.

Yes I have been really busy with my sons 10th birthday and our business and havent had time to be on the forums....and in the garden-of course!!!
It was nice of you to notice my absence:))

My favorite red rose is ROUGE ROYALE, a 2001 Hybrid Tea that is part of the Romantica series. If you like cut flowers it is impossible to beat: rich ruby red color (velvety on the top of the petal with a satiny reverse on the underside), thick petal substance, perfect flower formation (quartered), out of this world fragrance, loooooooong & strong stems, phenomenal vase life, and good remontancy (repeat bloom). The shrub ain't bad either: medium height, decent vigor, leathery foliage, and the growth habit is less upright than the typical Hybrid Tea so you get a nice busy plant. The only faults are a propensity for black spot and a tendency for the blooms to rot if a lot of water gets trapped in the deeply cupped buds. The color can also fade in scorching sun. The solution is to cut the wondrous ruby red blooms while young for the vase. Among the red Hybrid Perpetuals I've had my eye on ECLAIR for years. It is said to have the richest, most true red color in the entire class. The flower form is also quartered (my favorite flower form). The only reason I haven't bought it is because another rosarian told me the repeat bloom is unreliable. One day I still want to give it a try. CRAMOISI SUPERIEUR/LOUIS PHILIPPE deserves all the praise heaped on it. The one I got from COUNTRYSIDE ROSES and growing in my mother's zone 7b garden is not only very fragrant but has the most lovely petite globular flowers. Unlike a lot of reds the color improves as it is exposed to intense summer sun. It "suntans" from cerise to bright red. The foliage is very disease resistant. The China growth habit is weird but has its own charm once you get used to it. A perfect choice for an herb garden or potager. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE 2000 is the best crimson English Rose. Mine (grafted) is always in bloom with a lovely spreading growth habit that reminds me of the best Gallicas. He fits perfectly into a mixed flower border. The gorgeous blooms are sheer perfection in form rivaling the classic Gallica CHARLSES DE MILLS. Lovely fragrance too. Needs afternoon shade to preserve the candy apple red color. Two other reds high up on my list of favorites include MISTER LINCOLN (my late father's favorite rose) and TRADESCANT. I also one day want to try the climber ORFEO. Best wishes, Patrick

Bishop Darlington looks very interesting. Thanks for sharing JeriJen. I really like the informal non-fuss but relaxed look. I am beginning to realize that singles and semi-doubles give it a very relaxed feel compared to the highly formal hybrid teas. Anna-Marie de Montravel has that spring fresh look and it would really nice at night too. I really like it. It would look good in front of a garden. I bet it would really shine under a summer moon sky. Thanks Linaria. Thanks Sara-Ann for Tiffanny. I have seen this rose many times but never had the chance to buy one. I like this shade of pink in roses. It doesn't scream at you..lol. I agree with you Laura, which is why I bought mine this past spring. I only saw it flower once though but it was really nice. I am crossing my finger that it doesn't die under this snow. I am thinking of getting the red eden if it is available in my area.

Thanks everyone, Yes there is a lot of wild life on the block could be because we live across the road from a river, then there are lots of interesting places for them to hide on our block everywhere I went today I almost fell over Mrs Spikey, now everytime I hear hubby yelling "Your spikey is back" I kind of race down the steps with the camera But this time is wasn't Spikey this is smaller with no white markings so I named it Mrs Spikey. She or it just stays there watching us, it lets me get right up close I even touched its tail, it didn't seem worried in the least, mind you the eyes never stop moving, they are fasinating to watch as they stay so still for so long. No Dee the camera is too heavy but as hubby and I spend all morning out in the garden, you would be able to understand how we see so any things. Michelle it has been very hot down there my Sister and Brother have both rang and told me all about it, I feel so sorry for you all there but much cooler today. A glorious relief no doubt !! Thanks Heather, I like the wildlife too... GH I bet you have heaps of visitors on your block it looks like a great place they could live in comfort.... Cheers..MM.

I think I read here that you will be going to the Iris show at Mt Waverely this week?
I hope its you or I have made a mistake.

Michelle, Does your Pat Austin hang it's head down all the time? Mine does and they almost droop on to the ground. Love your roses, I haven't tried any of the Delbard's yet. In your opinion are they better than D.A.'s and do they have a good perfume?

This will be a long reply!, yes, the DAs I have ( I think I have about 12) are droopy. I have been told that that is referred to as nodding!Some are droopier than others.Golden Celebration literally lies on the ground!I have to stake them. However, they are young and haven't developed strong necks yet I have been told.
Pat Austin sits up on the bush for about 2 days in the bud stage before flowering then nodding and facing the ground.Same in the vase. I have to have a vase that supports the blooms.
The DAs drive me mad with that. The blooms are beautiful but I dont want to have to turn my head upside down to see them!!!
I have had great success with the Delbards.
They are strongly disease resistant ( never much BS and no PM.) The blooms repeat and stay fresh on the plant for many days.
They last in the vase if picked just when the bud starts to unfurl, for at least a week.
I have Paul Cezanne,France Libre,Chartruese de Parme,Belle de Seigler and have ordered Dioressence.(coming soon -cant wait)
Some are perfumed- the one that is outstanding is Chartreuse.The perfume is a knockout.So is Dioressence.
I cant compare the DAs with the Delbards except to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the Delbards are to manage in the garden.They are less finicky,have strong canes and very few fungal problems.....and I have no financial interest in the company:))

Actually ,a point to mention is the Meilland and Kordes roses are fabulous as well.I have a number of these and they never disappoint.Again, very little fungal episodes on these.
