First Canna Lily

This is for Happyjacq. My first new Canna Lily opened yesterday and Thanks you Hollyhocks for it,

So a few more of the new ones to come yet and that wont be long the way they are growing.

President:

This one is for Michelle, Hi Michelle that pink bud from yesterday is now full blown.

Princess Elizabeth:

This one is for Barbara, Its Mum come to the back door yesterday whistled to us then left her baby on the back

railing outside the kitchen window I had to take it through the window and insect screen, its not too good.

Baby Butcherbird:

One of my Single Gerbera's:

This plants flowers for months and can get to be a bit of a nuisance as it suckers and when it

touches the ground it grows more plants as well so Iam always pulling it out.

The last one is another Single Gerbera they are a lovely flower, in bloom for a lot of the year

Oh I love cannas, always so bright and if you look at the flowers in depth they are actually quite complex.
Gerberas always make me happy too, I love the singles. The pink on the yellow is absolutely gorgeous.
The butcher bird is very very cute. They look a bit more fierce as adults though.

The gerberas are very pretty, I have a few but have to find a new area for them as they aren't doing well where they are.

Butchie is cute, a lot of people don't like them but I think they are real characters. Can be a bit daunting feeding them by hand when you see that beak coming for you. They seem to be a good judge of meat or fingers though.

The other flowers look good too.

Bob, I ordered the following cannas on-line from Paradise Garden: Red King Humbert, Wyoming, Pretoria, Pink President, and City of Portland. For some reason, they didn't look exactly like the pictures to me, but perhaps because I'm a novice with these plants. Actually, I fell in love with the plant first, then quite by accident, and much to my suprise I noticed that I was getting hummers. Yes, the humming birds had no interest in the lovely large flowering ones, but stuck to the smaller long-throated flowers. (Note I said 'lovely' as apposed to gaudy-just MHO) Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough last year to label what I pulled up, so I'm going to have to just plant them and see what comes up. I've posted the link below if you're interested, but I'm afraid to order more due to the large number of tubers you wind up with from just one at the end of the season. I am guessing that you still have at least a couple months of decent growing conditions; therefore, remove all the old mature stalks but leave all the developing new growth. Cut the mature stalks roughly two to four inches above the ground. I would be sure to keep the transplanted canna well watered and apply a small dose of fertilizer if not already present in the new location. The new location would preferably be well drained. Cannas do not often "store" well in wet (boggy) winter soils. I am not sure if or when you might have frost or freezing weather. At some point the canna foliage can be removed and possibly a thin mulch applied over the top. All plant foliage can be cut to near ground level if you are leaving the plant in the ground. Depending on the size of your canna, you may need to consider dividing it early next spring. Kent

I'm no canna expert Tom, but I've had luck with some, not with others. If it's one you really value, I say dig it up and store it over winter. I was just saying yesterday, I've had better luck with Calla Lilys than with Cannas.

All cheek that little one MM,they are a lovely bird,is the Canna Tropical Red,and does Elizabeth have a sweet smell like lollies or rasberries something like that,all very nice,greencroc.

Nice ones once again MM.
I have to admit I am starting to see something in Cannas these days. I have always overlooked them, we always called them 'dunny lilies' as when I was a child every outhouse around seemed to be surrounded by Cannas. :-)
I love the glint in the Butcher bird's eye too.

Thanks HJ and GH. It certainly is a cute bird that Baby BB.
Greencroc the Canna's name is President. I went out and smelt Princess Elizabeth.
O it certainly has some type of smell, but sorry I cannot get too close cannot handle smells.
Barbara I know what you mean about Canna's, but there are some pretty ones out there.
