Thanks for your responses so far. I only thing that made me think of Liliaceae was the position of the leaves, even though they don't seem to have the same structure as the lily family. All other opinions greatly welcomed!

javalita, Hmmm. I don't know what mine smell like in the evening--- Usually in the evening (around 8 - 9 pm) I'm out there with the scissors trying to snip the walking sticks in half -- in the dark, I'm usually trying to avoid being scourged by rose thorns, so haven't stuck my nose in it's direction. It's right behind a Double Delight and an Intrigue (not to mention the ancient pink rose that while I have no idea what it is has a knockout scent and the prettiest bud I've ever seen on a rose), it would have to be pretty powerful to catch my nose without serious attention. I'm going out in an hour and I'll sniff a bit and let you know!

CRAPE MYRTLES baby! Oh my gosh, you are going to have so much fun discovering all the 'new' plants for old southern gardners. I have lived here just under two years and am having a blast. Spend lots of time driving around. The crape myrtles don't start blooming until mid summer and it's a welcome surprise. They are everywhere, lots of different colors, and the bark in the winter is interesting. We planted six last year. They are very fast growing. Gardenias are wonderful and seem to be easy to grow. There are different varieties. I have one that looks great all winter. The neighbor's variety dies back quite a bit but recovers. Camelias are shocking to this midwestern girl........ who knew you could have something bloom in December??? Dogwoods grow in the woods like redbuds do in the midwest. They are beautiful among the pines. I planted a Forest Pansy redbud last fall..... it's just starting to bloom. Magnolias obviously scream SOUTH! They are gorgeous year round. Osmantus is a great evergreen with fragrant flowers, either once or twice a year, depending on variety. Chinese fringe is a nice contrast to green bushes. Landscapers also seem to like laurel. Just for the record, my husband and I have fescue grass that we LOVE! Some of the neighbor's have Bermuda that they swear by. Coming from a colder climate I can't imagine not having green grass year round if you can! =) WELCOME TO SC!

Adam, I have a small woodland (largely sugarmaple with the odd Black Cherry and American Beech) garden and let me tell ya, it's trial and error on a lot of stuff so keeping a little log book of what does "well" and "where" will really help you. We've found that our Osterich Ferns will grow anywhere but to grow to 5' tall they do like a bit of dappled light. The Osmunda ferns like Cinnamon and Royal like even more light but not "direct" so they are right on the edge of the garden. The more delicate ferns obviously like the deep shade best and after the first winter you will find out what is the hardiest. Lobelia and Lilies for woodlands like the very edge of the woods as do violets, grasses, viburnums and dogwoods (although dogwoods and viburnums will also trive and fruit inside the woods as well, for the best fruiting they like the edge). Other forest plants I have are: Bloodroot (full to dappled shade) Blue Cohosh (full to dappled shade) May Apple (full to dappled shade) Trout Lily (full to dappled shade) Bunch Berry (full to dappled shade) violets purple, yellow and white natives (forest edge) round lobed hepatica (forest edge) native columbine (will bloom in shade but will do better the more sun it gets) Pale Corydallis (forest edge) Jack-in-the-pulpit False Solomon's Seal (flowers at the tip of the stem) Smooth Solomon's Seal (flowers along the underedge of the stem) Red Trilliums White Trilliums Canadian Ginger Flag Iris (full sun to part shade and lots of water) Man Fern (full to dappled shade and lots of water) Lady Ferns (full to dappled shade and lots of water) Hart's Tongue Fern (full shade and lots of water) Maiden Fern (full shade and lots of water from underneath) Cinnamon Fern (full/part/dappled/north facing forest edge and water) Royal Fern (same as cinnamon fern) Christmas Fern (hardy, not sure if it tolerates sun at all as we have it in the deep shade) Wood Fern (same as Christmas) Sensitive Fern (likes very wet conditions) Osterich Fern (versatile and if very wet(swamp/pond) can even tolerate sun) For shrubs we have: Redbud (1) Serviceberry (2) Nannyberry (1) Highbush Cranberry (1) American Hazelnut (1) Red Osier Dogwood (1) Pin Cherry (many) Spicebush (4) Elderberry (2) Other plants we are currently searching for are: Squirrel Corn (difficult to find) Dutchman's Breeches (difficult to find) Shooting star (difficult to find) Painted Trillium (difficult to find) Blue False Indigo (easy to find) Hope that helps.
