This site is crap full of adds

I tried to make a comeback to this forum, I have wonderful rose info to share but I just can't stand the adds. I think I'll quit this forum yet again and does anybody know of a better one without all the add crap ? I don't want to hear about the need for sponsors etc, it's just some goon(s) sitting on his date making money from freedom loving rose enthusiasts like us.

You need MOZILLA-you can block all the ads.:)

I have Mozilla as well and only get 1 ad.
You may need to update your software/firewalls/antispam stuff.
It would be interesting to hear what you have to share.

Oh good! I knew they would not have a chance leaving them where they were. The funny thing is I had done a frog search just before it was supposed to freeze. The weather man was wrong and there was one more nice day after I did the search before it froze. I wonder how many are in the 500 gal pond. I just can not believe there were so many frogs in that tiny little pond. I am so thankful for the thaw (it's back down into the mid 30s now and snowing). The bottom of the stream/bog I put them in is very muddy and could be where some of them came from. I hope they are all doing well. I do enjoy the frogs as much as the fish but when they get big enough to eat birds they get relocated back to thier natural habitat.

we had a concrete yard with a foot high layer of soil in a raised bed and we raised rocket lettuce basil spinach and chard in there. if you have about two or three foot you could try anything just buy some seeds and see how they fair seeds are fairly cheap and if nothing comes of it theres little lost. just top up whats already there with a good layer of compost and sprikle your seeds on top. wildflowers native to your area will grow almost anywhere they can find footing even out of walls and many are shade loving you could try collecting seeds from wildflowers along shaded woods that take your fancy or if your permitted taking the plants and a good chunk of soil with them and replanting beside your trees. beans will also grow in shade and climbers will creep up the trees and find light something like honeysuckle or jasmine so long as they have enough food to feed the roots while they are climbing up. you may get less of a crop of flowers or fruit from anything in shade like kale will grow much smaller but it will still grow.

Oprah had a woman on yesterday, wish I could remember her name, but she was talking about the relationship between how we keep/arrange/decorate our homes and our internal work. She said it works both ways, change the inside and the home changes, or change the home and the inside changes. Something to keep in mind. Sounds like you are ready for the outside to be lovely. That is a beautiful peaceful room and you deserve to have it affect your inside that way as well. Susan, I think Talley Sue is right, some thinking about infrastructure is called for. That, and, what can you get rid of. Talley Sue, I had a design professor in college a million years ago, and he had similar wall treatments in his living room. His were painted white, but the same idea, each was a square about 2 1/2'. The doors were pressure loaded somehow, if you just pressed the bottom corner of the door, the cabinet would open. Three entire walls of the living room were covered in invisible cabinets. He had the most amazing collection of wind-up toys in there and pulled them all out and set them going, much to our delight.

The title of this post made me burst out laughing. Thanks, I needed that! As a horse person, my recommendation is to get manure directly from the pasture or paddocks instead of in the stalls. There are plenty of people who don't learn how to clean stalls properly and end up tossing dollars (shavings) out with every scoop. Of course, stalls are stripped when needed and all new bedding added but for the most part, the pee spot is scooped out and the manure is picked out with an apple picker. Nope, not a picker for apples but a device made for picking up horse manure since it is shaped like apples. Google it for a photo. :-) So you are getting not only manure but extremely strong and believe me it will knock you down strong urine. No other animal that I know of has urine like this. Plus they have a lot of it. You may want to ask the people if they will allow you to pick up the droppings in the paddocks when the horses are put up. So you don't endanger yourself unless you are experienced with horses. Most farms will be happy to let you do it. In Wellington Florida, they have paid manure pickup companies that are licensed with the city. It is against the law to leave manure standing in paddocks or manure bins for very long. This helps keep the fly populations down. It is also a great location to get manure free of charge in the paddocks since they are cleaned daily. That includes Loxahatchee just north of Wellington. However, horse manure should be composted to gain the full benefits plus fresh manure attracts flies. Horse manure doesn't come in patties so it is easy to break up once dry. It dries very quickly. Unlike cow manure horse, manure breaks down faster. Much faster, so you aren't sitting around waiting forever to use it. Horse manure is generally ranked 1.5–1.0–1.5 N-P-K. The benefit of the shavings comes when you compost since it is a carbon rich material. Which is what you must combine with the manure during composting. I add leaves, sticks, palm fronds (cut up), grass clippings, cardboard from food packaging and boxes, junk mail that isn't printed on glossy paper. I also add kitchen scraps from fruit, tea bags, peanut shells, corn cobs, hair (human or animal hair) coffee, veggies, peelings, tissue paper, Spanish moss, houseplant clippings, stale bread, etc. NEVER use anything that comes from an animal ie. meat, dairy, etc. Only add egg shells if your soil tests low in calcium. I use a ratio of 25 to 1 (25 carbon rich materials to 1 manure). That will help decrease the time it takes to become compost. In regards to the term hot manure. Fresh manure is considered hot because it is very rich in nutrients and can burn the roots of any tender plants or seedlings. This is why leaving it in a compost bin for a bit is recommended. The nutrients die down to a safe level making it better for your plants and garden. I hope this helps.

I have never seen an add. Mybe thats because my husband who controls our server hates adds to. Computer genious husband's are quite handy.

Stop complaining about ads. If you feel you cant make any useful contributions because of a few ads, dont bother.

I find the Garden Web is very slow with loading & the process we go through to post a follow up is a pain but I have solved the problem I have a card game going now & I bring it up & play it till I see the post ready to look at worth a try plus ignore the adds

I have a couple of windows opened and flit between the two while I wait. The ads sure slow it down heaps and curbs the desire to look at more than a couple of messages near the top of the list.

My "Roses in Oz" is running at fossilised tortoise speed too.Have removed spyware/adware but made no difference.

I'm not sure I understand all the less than pleasant comments on this thread. I think waldon's comment was perfectly fair. He/she is probably not reading this thread anyway.
There was a change in ownership about a year ago Roses in Oz, and things have gone down hill since then. Even the people that paid up membership seem to complain about it. It is a pity because many of us are regulars and enjoy the discussions. A lot will eventually give up altogether, and sadly it is often those who are best able to give good advice to more inexperienced gardeners.

I am aware of a couple of other forums, unrelated to this one, where people left in droves because of too many ads and slow speed.It must be terrible if you are on dialup.

I agree, this place used to be such a pleasure - I'd flit in and out all the time - and that was when we had dial-up. Nowadays it's hard work and we've got satellite! I don't visit as often as I used to.

Our roses in oz has continued to slow down every day .I visited my mother today who's just bought a computer and has ADSL broadband.It was marginally faster but it was at a peak usage time.

Hi All,
If you use Norton Internet Security and Adaware and update and scan daily, you can get most of your speed back. The more you use the web the more time the others have to get in on your act.So if you just do a few at a time or go on at off peak time, you will get a quicker service, just great for us shift workers.The site sponsers have the use of your time as well if they didn't the internet would not work, some one has to pay for the use of the net. If you have free internet, good luck, but there is no such thing as a free lunch. If you find one please let us all know.

I now only go on every other day as it is too time consuming & I find it so dissapointing as it used to be so great I am on dial up but the speed I have is slow but it always was & I didn't have the problems that we all seem to cop now

I have dial up my son put Outpost firewall on, and apart from having to log in every time I look in there are no adds or pop ups.

I have mozilla and all the Norton software loaded here and am on broadband. We have an ad block and all the add ons.
As a result no ads and normal speed.
I havent had a slow speed at all.
The trouble is you need to update your software on a regular basis and we have good tech who comes and regularly checks everything and puts in whats required.
this is, of course, expensive.
We run 4 networked PCs here at home and about 8 at work and our tech looks after them all.
We are lucky in that regard.
