After pruning, What spray??
Comments (7)Thanks Mike, Sunspray is I believe what I used last year, I think I will just use it again. I really don't know if I even have insects on my plants, I am sure there are those I can not see and I don't think that a spray that kills the over wintering insects will hurt at this time of the year. Yes hershigrl there will be no leaves after pruning, some have already fallen off but they really do not go into a dormancy. It has been cold at night (34-40F that is cold to us, we are used to the heat that is why we get cold so easy) and during the day it is over cast and 65F right now, December, January and Feb are our coldest months. I know that when the heat kicks in I never use any oil type sprays. Stephanotis 1 I live in the Lake Havasu City area, I see you are in zone 8 where is that in Arizona?? Prescott???. It gets so hot here in the summer we can get up to 125+F. I have my roses strategically placed, by the afternoon the sun is on the other side of my house so the roses are in the shade by 2:00P. I usually give them organics in the summer it really helps them survive the stress of the heat, and of course lots of water. Carrie...See MoreCreating an environment to reduce insects and disease
Comments (18)I'm cautious about organic time release fertilizer. I would use only once for cold zone (6 months of growth), and twice for warm zone. Small correction needed there. You are assuming all time released fertilizers work on a 6 month basis. I believe that if you read the small print, you will find that some of them work on either a 3 month or a 4 month basis also. Just depends on which type you buy. If gardeners enjoy fussing this much over their roses, then go to it! Whatever works is fine. Myself, I've been gardening for 30 years and don't put in anywhere close to that much effort--and I'll put up my roses against anybody's else's. Basically, unless you have really abnormal soil, I don't think you need to do all that messing with it. I usually add a couple shovel's full of humus or manure or something like that at planting time. Some years I add a circle of manure around the rose--other years I don't. Other than that, about all a rose needs is regular watering (rain or hose) and an occasional feeding of a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10, for instance). Some springs I've been too busy to get to a spring feeding. Guess what--the roses bloomed beautifully anyway. Like most people here, I like alfalfa--I may spread it once a year -- or not, depending on whether I have time or not. The roses still bloom beautifully, either way. And like most gardeners here, I avoid insecticides. There are usually other ways to handle insects--like, be patient and wait for the good bugs to arrive and eat 'em up. Amazing how often that works quite well! I do spray a fungicide occasionally, but I go out of my way to plant only highly disease-resistant roses, so many of my roses need little or no spraying of fungicide. In other words, get back to basics. Give the roses sun, water them regularly (rain or hose), and feed them occasionally. That about covers most of their needs as far as I'm concerned. Oh, I forgot one other essential--lots of mulch! : ) That's my most time-consuming chore--refreshing the mulch each year. Kate...See MoreRust
Comments (12)Last year, both of my Heaven On Earth roses were covered in rust. They were so bad I was going to shovel prune them both in June. To make this task easier, I ended up hard pruning them and removing all the leaves. But before I had a chance to remove them, they leafed out again without any sign of disease; two of the healthiest plants in the yard. Due to the rains, this year I had rust on the compost that I lay under the roses. They were orange scales of fungus that grew on the soil. I ended up spraying them with copper, soil and the plants, after that those orange fungus scales have disappeared. Good luck, FJ...See MoreHow to get rid of rust?
Comments (13)Thank you for all the help you guys! I'm currently using the Bayer 3 in 1 systemic that you mix in with water, than water you roses with it. I'm also using the Safer brand spray, so maybe I should get a spray just for rust and other diseases. Thanks for that tip. I will also spray the ground, and take off the infected leaves. I have tried to take some off already, but I have hardly had anytime at all this week to be home when I can still see before dark. Hopefully it won't be too much of a problem and won't spread to anything else. I would post a picture of the rust for you, but I'm not really sure how yet, I will try. Hoovb: I guess I should have listen to you after seeing your abe darby, I really wanted one and bought one, now mine has rust like yours! :)...See MoreShaneqld
