This is a known winter tender rose--it sounds like you either need a warmer spot, better winter protection, or another rose. Ideally, you want southern exposure, shielding from wind, and plenty of light--like I have between a wheelchair ramp and a bay window. You could also put tender roses next to a furnace chimney or asphalt driveway. I grow St Patrick near the driveway--it usually doesn't survive winters around here, but I've had it for years.

David, Its always a dilemma how to amend our soil. It is a matter of preference and balance. First look at the label for your Scott’s Garden Soil. You need to know what ingredients are in the soil and how much “added fertilizer does it have, if any? Most soils now have added fertilizer. How many months does label say fertizer in soil lasts? Most soils have “light fertilizer in them... not too much nitrogen or potassium or phosphorus. So you can add a little chicken manure for fertilizer , too. I need to check online to see the rose formula for Nitrogen-Potassium-phosphorus. Roses need a small percentage of each. One needs to be especially careful to not add too much nitrogen. Please check online to get correct percentages for fertilizer for roses. Chicken manure is high in nitrogen so I know you are supposed to not use too much on roses... but people like to use it. (I use cow manure, lower in nitrogen.) I would advise to research internet to see how much chicken manure to add to your soil. To really know exactly how much fertizer to add you would need to test your soil. I am going to add cow manure to my clay soil and a little Miracle Gro soil, too. I am just going to be careful to add a little. Too much nitrogen or fertilizers burn plants. Have fun! if all your frosts are past you may plant. I am zone 6, but I won’t plant until first or second week in April when I’m sure it’s steady 40-60 degrees, which is considered best.

rosecanadian Both roundup damage and RRD produce the strange distorted growth on roses called witches broom. RRD has other symptoms as well which may include bright red new grow, new shoots larger than the stem they are growing on and more. You can look it up. RRD usually shows up on new growth on one branch first and it looks really bizarre, It spread from one branch to the next. Roundup damage appears fairly suddenly though it can be weeks after the spraying was done. It shows up on multiple branches at the same time and does not spread to new branches. It can take a year for a rose to recover from Roundup damage and sometimes they never are the same as before. As long as Czarinalex has never sprayed Roundup, never hired lawn care or garden care service or garden spray service, then is probably not Roundup damage. Roundup damage may also occur from spray drift from a neighbor if the yards are small or houses are close together. Czarinalex, it would be a good idea to contact your ag extension office to see if they want to confirm RRD. Then you would know for sure.
