Val - how can you tell :) that it's roundup vs RRD? Trying to learn. :)

I think strawchicago is right. The 'rosette' cluster of branches described in the article is very much apparent on this rose.

We don't use any kind of weed killer anywhere. Too much wildlife here. I pull them by hand. :-)

My neighbor showed me Round-up damage after she sprayed her weeds and it got onto her peony's bush. Her bush got completely WILTED leaves, see below round-up damage that wilted tomato-bush (internet pic.)

In contrast, RRD shows perky & witches broom reddish growth. I had RRD on only one rose (out of my 130+) back in 2012. It got RRD since I put too much ACID & high-nitrogen fertilizer which attracted pests. My RRD rose: only 1/2 of the bush was affected (upper branches), but the lower branches were normal. I dug up and trashed the bush. That was the only rose affected out of 130+ own-root roses that I have grown for the past 2 decades. RRD is carried by a mite. If you don't live near anyone that might have used round up then I guess you can eliminate that possibility. However I did have a helper spray and it got in my ground and my roses took it up and the growth looked exactly the same. This happened on many many roses about which I posted ast year. I thought it might have been the cold snap also but have concluded that he did spray with round-up. It has taken a couple of years for some of those roses to rebound but they did. However They never grew new growth that was clustered like yours which is why I'm Going with RRD. Also RRD will usually 1st exhibit on new tip growth when it is 1st infected and then will come from New growth at the bottom after it has infected the roots. That's why removing one cane when it is 1st noticed might help, but if it comes back the next spring time to take the plant out. Your rose looks infected from the roots unfortunately.

Both roundup damage and RRD produce the strange distorted growth on roses called witches broom. RRD has other symptoms as well which may include bright red new grow, new shoots larger than the stem they are growing on and more. You can look it up. RRD usually shows up on new growth on one branch first and it looks really bizarre, It spread from one branch to the next.

Roundup damage appears fairly suddenly though it can be weeks after the spraying was done. It shows up on multiple branches at the same time and does not spread to new branches. It can take a year for a rose to recover from Roundup damage and sometimes they never are the same as before.

As long as Czarinalex has never sprayed Roundup, never hired lawn care or garden care service or garden spray service, then is probably not Roundup damage. Roundup damage may also occur from spray drift from a neighbor if the yards are small or houses are close together.

Czarinalex, it would be a good idea to contact your ag extension office to see if they want to confirm RRD. Then you would know for sure.

I think that the best info you shared was about the onset...one cane vs all over the bush. That should be easy to distinguish. :) Thanks!
