Help identify this tree/seed pod please

We photographed this tree in south of France last year. I have searched all my books (and my friends) but none of us can identify the tree. It was about 15-20ft high and had quite a broad canopy. The photo clearly shows the flower/seed pods and was taken in autumn. The leaves were a heart shape and quite fleshy.

Anyone recognise this please?

The only thing I could think it being is the seeds of Clerodendrum..
but Im not sure.

This plant appeared in the Plant ID section of another Australian garden forum. I think it was identified as Clerodendron trichotomum

That looks like it. Thanks for the warning too. I was wondering if they were poisonous because just handling them made my hands feel weird. I will try to grow it anyway cause as a container plant in the north there is not much chance of it bearing fruit. My friend said they had cut down the tree. Maybe because its dangerous.

Thanks Flora UK. I found this in my garden, residential near to the coast, about half a mile. I have five seed pods, they all look similar but not absolutely identical as the colours differ from darkish brown to this lighter colour. Instead of having a waxy surface it is more glossy looking. Does any of this help?

Thank you to both of you for identifying this mystery tree. Now I see there are hundreds of photos like mine on Flickr. Why couldn't I find them before???
Now I am heading for my garden book to see more about it.
