Bird of Paradise seed pod?

Could someone help me regarding this - I am assuming my Strelitzia has a seed pod. How do I care for this now? I have never seen one before and would like to know when I should remove it from the plant and how to care for it so that I have the best chance of propagating it.

You need to be patient - they take a couple of months to ripen. Sometimes they are subject to insects that bore in to the pods, but early removal is no good - leave them to ripen on the plant. You could place a little pantyhose material around it - that will allow the air in still but stop the seeds being lost. Just keep checking it - I noticed today that some older pods on mine have finally dried and split due to this hot weather. The seeds are very cute :-)

I think I remember reading that they are 3-5 years to bloom, and in zone 5 you would have to bring them inside and try to winter them over. Seems like a long shot to me.

I would just gently nick the seed coat. In the past, I have used a nail clipper for this. Then just plant them in a well-draining soil mix. They must have real heat in order to germinate. I learned this when I tried without success to germinate them at warm room temps 75-78 F.--they did nothing. I threw the seeds out into the compost heap and they started to germinate outside in 90+ F. temps..

Thanks for your speedy response, Cagary. When I found the pod & saw salvia-sized seeds on the outer shell, I thought they might be dispersed throughout the pod Â like a yucca pod. Anyway, after seeing your pic, I saw three pea sized bumps on one pod, & voila Â 3 seeds. Not much for such a big plant, but I am happy for these. Do you know how many seeds a flower head normally produces? Have you ever grown this variety from seed before? Thanks so much for your help.
