Well done, I wish I could grow them down here. We are just going without bananas at the moment.

My husband told me this joke the other day.

A man goes into a greengrocers and asks for $4 worth of bananas. The greengrocer replies, "Why don't you make it $5 and you can have a whole one."

It's not so far from the truth now!

deejaus - why not try them - there are melbournians on the banana forum and my sister in law is about to try growing them - she's going to keep them in a big pot (probably half a wine barrel) and wheel them in each night during the winter.

Some americans are growing bananas in chicago and newyork - their winters are a lot colder, but with a bit of effort you can wheel them into a frost free spot (garage or house) each night and before you know it you are picking your own bananas.

And then you can start singing the old classic - Hey mister tally man tally me bananas LOL

And I bet you'll eat them with pleasure even if there are imperfections. I read the other day where a grower in nQ, sick of tossing the rejects (as determined by the market) back in the paddock, arranged for these to go as backloading to the apes at the Melbourne Zoo.

Was it always the consumer's idea that fruit had to be perfect? Or did the retailers help train us thus? Surely to goodness a banana deprived family would pay *normal* price for these....perfectly edible fruit.

Our local fruit shop sells so called imperfect fruit
Why because they have marks on the skin not in the flesh
And Pink Lady apples at $1.29 kg they taste better
Than the ones at the supermarkets at $4.98 kg
I always peel the skins off the fruit anyway

Chandler Sunday market here sells banana's at $2kg
Beenleigh Sunday Market sells perfect apples at $1.50kg
So don't buy them from the supermarkets and they will get the idea.

I heard from a seller at one of the markets here they have cool stores packed
To the roof with bananas, also don't forget after that Cyclone they collected
And stores hundreds of bunches its not now the fruit should be expensive
Its around Christmas when the plants that were ruined are not producing
The mind boggles at what the supermarkets will change for them then

As usual Supermarkets fleecing off the public.

So don't moan about the price don't buy them...MM.

Tweed growers still selling them cheaper and can be had at the markets. Yes I dare say the big chains use the opportunity to fleece us just as they do the producers - meat veggies and fruit all off the planet prices just because we are "softened up" to natural disasters and fuel prices adding to transport costs.

We have a great market in Rockhampton where you can get bananas and PawPaw so much cheaper than the Supermarkets, also there are other vegetables there all lovely and fresh from the growers with little imperfections in them but they taste so much better than the ones out of the cold stores with the Middle Man and supermarket prices on them.

I was in Woolies and saw Bananas for $11.99 a kg. so I just politely said to the fellow working there, " I am off to the markets on Sunday to buy these for $2.50 kg on Sunday, maybe you should take yours down there to sell for that too ".
He just said, no wonder we are throwing so many bad bananas out round here, no one is buying them.

Serves them right I say. but a shame to see such a wonderful fruit going to waste because of greed.

Is it just the cold (frost) that kills them, or do they particularly need a long period of warm weather to ripen?
