PGGC "Giant Genetics" seed auction Begins !!!

At www.perrysgreenhouse.com we are holding a "Giant Genetics" seed auction.

This auction consist of some of the World's greatest seeds capable of producing a new County, State, or even World Record vegetable.

This Auction is being held to help support keeping this great community online, running smoothly and offering our members the latest in bulletin board software and features.

90% of the procedes of this auction will be designated to community development and covering associated cost of running the site.

10% of the Net procedes of this auction will be designated to helping disabled veterans via a donation made to:

This will be the first in a two part series of auctions, with the next auction comprising of Giant Pumpkin, Squash, Long Gourd, tall corn, sunflowers and other Giant vegetable genetics.

Currently included in this auction are seeds from the past Two World Record Pumpkins the 1689 Jutras and the 1725 C. Harp. Also included is the seed which grew the current World Record Pumpkin, the 1385 Jutras, "one of the best heavy producing pumpkin seeds of ALL time".

For the Giant Tomato enthuisiast, we have three lots of seeds from the current Ohio State Record and fourth largest tomato ever grown in the World, the 7.18 N. Harp.

Also included is the 5.58 Timm seed which grew the 7.18 N. Harp, along with several other prime genetic examples capable of producing the next World record Tomato.

You never know what might show up !?!

I've helped out the JCMVAMC. They are a wonderful VA hospital with excellent programs and are well known for their Women's Clinic. Last year, through outreach, WinterSown.Org was contacted when they were celebrating Women's History Month and I sent them tomatoes that have female names like Isis Candy or Aunt Gertie's, and Chocolate Cherry too because what woman doesn't love chocolate, lol.

Anyway, I wish you luck with the auction and encourage everyone to participate because JCMVAMC just rocks! They are a blessing to their patients.

ca_cherry_grower: No I did not start the non-pareil almond from a seed. It's from Costco (I believe Coiner Nursery) and was a bareroot purchase. It appeared to be a branch cutting that was rooted. Unfortunately the tips on all the terminal branches on the almond seem to be dying back and I am not sure whether it will survive. It's been 3 weeks that it's been planted (7+ hours direct sun) but not sign of any buds opening. No leaves. Nothing. They only had the non-pareil at that time. I wanted to buy another almond, but since this one is having a tough time, I am not sure about getting another. Actually I am having bad experience with 5 out of 7 bareroot plants from Costco. Above stated almond may not make it. And I had bought 4 barerroot roses from them (By Jackson Perkins) and all 4 of them developed canker. 2 of them actually had fungal infections on the roots when I opened the root wraps. I just washed the roots and treated them with fungicide hoping for the best. And all of this after picking the plants up relatively early in the season from Costco, soaking the roots overnight in room temperature water, planting them per instructions and regular irrigation (not timed, but need based - am checking the soil every single time before watering). I already spoke with Jackson and Perkins on the roses and they asked me to take them back to Costco. I spoke with Costco and they said I can bring them back anytime within a year. I want to give the roses some more time and see what happens (I hate returning stuff to Costco - given their low prices and everything!). The infected branches on the roses have been pruned but it might still be a problem coz. the main stems are infected too. I am currently treating them systemically and had even sprayed them before beginning the systemic treatment. If they do show some growth, at least enough to give me a branch or two at the end of season for rooting, I might keep them - even if it will set me back by a year or 2. Two are patented, so I will need permissions from the hybridizer - which I am not sure how easy it will be. Let's see. I have a visit planned on the 6th to a nursery in Fremont, CA (Regan's Nursery). I might pick up some more roses from there and if they have the almods and lime - then I might pick those up too. I will give the current almond tree I have until then. Edlo - Thanks for the tip on pruning. I will look it up on google.

My "runt' looked like that pic with the lime green leaves....I eventually lost it. I think Mike is right on that it isn't an exact science....humidity, heat, water makeup all play a factor. Hopefully mine is strong enough to make it thru this winter. I'm going to have to watch it carefully. Mine is looking like half leaves are brown and green, since i moved mine home i have a new shoot and a couple of new leaves that are green. my soil i used was native and a promix about 50/50....moved into a three gal when i got it from Kudzu last spring/summer. He sent mine in a little peat pot. it was about 3"/4" inches.... I was under the impression that "yellowing" of leaves were signs of overwatering. not brown "leaf burn"...maybe i'm the exact opposite....I'm lefty you know...lol....could it be that i have no idea what i'm talking about???? Leaf curl is signs of not enough water....yes?.....yellowing of older leaves and leaf drop in spring is normal....browning of the tips could be lack of protection from wind or suffering from transpiration...or at least something like that.....Maybe i need to crack open the old books again.... This may help: http://www.ovgpg.com/ I have scanned the net to research the methods of the champion growers (many good books are also available) and it seems the one universal is advance soil preparation in terms of adequate space for the initial plant, deep soil preparation, checking the PH, plenty of compost (not just manure, prevention of insects and fungus, frequent watering (as in constant), and the provision of the right nutrients including the trace elements. Old myths, like milk straws to the stems, are NOT used, mostly just plenty of advance soil prep in the main growing area and along the line where the stems will send down roots. Some even bury the stems. Shade fabric prevents many problems. My take on the whole process is that the real key is providing the right growing conditions and starting well in advance of the growing season to assure drainage, humus, life in the soil, and encourage deep roots..then constant care, feeding, and protection.

Even with 1000 seeds, there might be only left 40 seedlings in summer. In my case I have only 225 seeds and might end up with 10 seedlings in August - there is not more space anyway and I had my winter fun. ==>>> yep bernie hit the thing i was holding back on ... i will yell THEY ARE NOT YOUR BABIES ... get rid of extras ... the key here is to have a goal ... streakers for sure ... or maybe your goal is yellow.. etc ... one thing your goal should NEVER be.. and i will yell again.. ANOTHER STINKIN GREEN HOSTA ... unless you have a football stadium sized greenhouse.. .. and i am talking OP [open pollinated seed here .. see PS] and that is probably why the tray system works.. if i were to germ 1000 seedlings.. in might only cup-up 100 .. and by the second cupping.. 50 ... etc .. whereas.. you may have wasted a lot of cups and media .... [i know you really arent working at this volume.] trust me.. i made the baby mistake my first time.. never again ... and in culling.. if you look really .. really close.. all mature traits will be there .. wavy.. ripples.. pebbled ... etc.. but you might go blind 'seeing' it all ... lol ken ps: if your goal is for the next giant of giants.. and your goal is addressed in your actually going out there and taking pollen from say P. Wu .. and crossing it onto some other ginormous hosta.. both green because you want all the genes of both giant plants.. well.. 99.999999% of the seedlings will be green. and you will grow them all on .. until they have flowers/pollen .. so you can keep crossing and perfecting the genetics ... this is way beyond most of us ... especially beginners ... but i though it might help superficially to mention it ...

Just wondering...About what do these seeds usually go for?
Dollar a seed? 10 dollars a seed? 100 dollars a seed?
No way am I in the bidding. Be nice if Trudi would send me a couple for free. I'd even furnish the stamps..

Colo, there are a lot of "Bidding for Charity" type sites, and I assume (but don't know) that they would go with something structured like that. And when you use this type of fundraising auction the donator of the item being bid upon sets a basic price which is bid up to and maybe beyond. I recently donated ten sets of ten sets of tomato seeds and collectively they raised over $200 for that charity.

I do a lot of work to help charities, and some charities help me--it's an amazing process that benefits everyone. I still don't draw a salary but that's the way it is for now.

Well, WinterSown is a registered 501c3 and I give away the seeds, but everyone supplies their own envelope with two-stamps on it so I can mail them back padded and proper. Currently there's about 150 choices on the list, ysterday I added Piriform, Jack White, Bear Claw, and Pink Floyd Mix.

Would have understood about the charity side of it if I had stopped to think. Big deal here is 4H fairs where we buy the kids fat calf for thousands to help them through collage. I see your seed give away and thank you for helping others and promoting OP tomatoes. I hope you have help with it. Right now I am trying to figure out where to plant the 32 varieties I have seed for and want to try. Forgive my english."have seed for".

That is normally determined by the seed and bidders in the auction. All of the auctions have starting bids which vary.
"proven seeds" or seeds which have a known past of performing very well for others are more highly prized.
Some seeds sell for extremely high prices, but Only due to the venue they are sold in. Example: Some pumpkin seeds sell for an average of $500 per seed but ONLY because they are sold at auctions which benefit Giant Pumpkin Growing Clubs. Members who benefit from these clubs enjoy giving back.

As an example at this auction; 5 seeds from the 7.18 N, Harp 09 "Big Zac" have a starting bid of $10.

There is also a Lot which contains 14 different varieties which are known to produce larger than average tomatoes. This lot contains between 235 and 600 seeds and the starting bid is $10.

Myself and several other members there are happy to send out free seeds. I send out a hundred or so bubbles each year along with prizes from contest and other site giveaways. Unfortunately there are so many seeds to go around, so I for the most part give members of Perrys Greenhouse preference.

Join the site and I'll send you a Private Message, send me a Self Addressed Stamped bubble for pumpkin seeds or a stamp for tomato seeds, and I'll be happy to send some seeds back.

Colo, yes I have some help--but not staff, it's a one woman show here which means if something goes wrong it's entirely my fault but when it goes right I like to share the credit with AgNIC because they taught me so much.

A lot of the seeds you see on the list are donated by many posters across all the tomato forums and gardening communities on the internet. Some folks send seeds, some folks send stamps, and some folks share a few sheckels too. About a year ago I added the donation venue to the SASEs and that has allowed me to finally cover my operational expenses. I am truly grateful to everyone who has helped in their own way.
